In the late 1980s, I kept the wild North American species for a couple years. In that time, I ended up having a little colour variation crop up (dark coral, or more pronounced light spots), as well as eventually a few albinos. When I moved, I just put them back in the yard where I had found them. Their favourite food was carrot tops.
I have some porcellio laevis orange that I got as a clean up crew for my crestie. I fell in love with them to be honest, he was correct about the feeding response in them, watching them investigate and tug of war over pellets, veggies etc is surprisingly fun. I am glad I held back from using the whole shipped colony as a clean up crew since now I have a bonus group of pets to enjoy.
Hearing y'all's talk about the isopods kinda feels like I just walked into a dispensary. Here is high yellow, it pretty big with great color, you'll really enjoy this one
This has been one of the most fascinating videos of yours yet! I had no idea there was such a big world of isopod enthusiasts. I wonder if marine isopods of any kind are kept much at all? It's interesting hearing all the different common names for them! Where I grew up there were called woodlouse, where my mum grew up they're sowbugs, I've heard pillbugs, and roly-poly, and where I live now, they're called carpenters!
Marine Isopods are widely kept in marine aquaria, where they serve as a cleanup crew and as snacks for larger inhabitants. Most of them are not very colorful, but there are some with very strange shapes!
Clint sliding in that beautiful Jurassic Park reference. Loved it. Im not super keen on insects in general( I do love tarantulas) but Isopods are super cute. It is a factor pushing me to make my enclosures bioactive.
Want to give the zebras credit that they're very good as the cleanup crew for my Indonesian blue tongue skink. My favorite for the video are the trilobite isopods. Our little buddies are back! And they've had such a glow up!
I keep isopods as pets - the pandas, the powder orange, the silver stripes, dairy cows and rubber duckies, 5000 at least on total. I love them so much. I feed them leaves and sticks, and chestnuts, and my organic food scraps, and cat food and shed skins of the roaches (tarantula food colony). Such delightful little guys.
This video made my day, love learning about isopods. I only have dairy cows as of recently but I'm excited for more when I can. It's so hard to choose favorites from here but I really like the yellow skirts, Oreo crumbles, and milkbacks.
This was the best half hour of my week! Gotta love isopods they are so stinking rad 🥰, I was really hoping he have Sicilian Hissing isopods they are amazing 😉, rubber duckies are so sweet love them all. I hope you show us which ones you end up getting ♥️ thank you ever so much for sharing and best wishes always.
My favorites were the ones that most closely resemble the trilobites! I had Geology class in high school the trilobites was easily my favorite fossil...because, I played with rollie pollies growing up! We had the plain gray ones, but they have all but almost disappeared. We live in the high mountain desert and have severe drought conditions and very low humidity. That was a special time in my childhood!
I'm not the biggest fan of isopods in general but I really like the Dairy Cows. Also I recently donde out about pseudarmadillo spinosus, which are now by far my favorite isopods
Okay, this video has convinced me to one day get Isopods. They are such gorgeous little animals! My favorite is without a doubt Porcellio expansus, very pleasing pattern and a resemblance to Trilobites just awe struck me.
I just love your enthusiasm about everything you talk about. Like a kid showing off his favourite toy.. I am not a fan of bugs but I enjoyed watching you guys
I used to find isopods very similar to Armadillidium gestroi in my garden in Istanbul. There were the same yellow spots but I don’t think they were quite so distinct. Perhaps A. marmoratum? Great show! My only suggestion would be, instead of saying that something is “big” or “three times the size of x,” it would be helpful to tell us actual length.
You're right about isopods. I don't like insects and spiders at all, but isopods don't bother me. I'd actually like to keep something like the rubber duckies in a nice terrarium if they weren't so expensive.
They might just be the most ideal exotic pet for the first timer. I'm tempted to get some myself. As much as I love spiders I also have a phobia of them sooooo not ideal. I don't trust myself to not kill any reptile or amphibian I get & I can't get pet rats due to having two Yorkshire terriers. Really like the Zebras. Hardy, good for beginners, active so fun to watch & very pretty. Pure perfection.
I'm 100% certain that I have a bunch of dwarf whites in my indoor greenhouse. I was looking for a colony to purchase, but now that I know that I might already have a colony of my own, I just need to make them a habitat. Very informative and entertaining, thanks!
i never thought I would find them so interesting. You kicked me right back to my childhood days where we would make them roll up and play with them. My favourite were the red ones and the ducky. Isopods seem to be one of the most peaceful of the "creepy crawlies".
Hello! Just purchased my very first isopods! Dairy cows are roaming the lands of my making lol Thank you for providing me with information so I could make a good decision!
My aunt: "Who the heck would even LIKE those nasty things? They're woodlice, garden pests!" Me: Has an "I brake for Roly-Polies" bumper sticker, and actively loves my local backyard colony for the heck of it!
Great breakdown on these amazing little guys! I learned so much from this video. I just have some basic “potato bugs” (Pittsburgh term) that I collected right outside work from landscaping mulch. It’s a labor of love to pick them out (lotta mites and other things we don’t want) but enjoyable to let them loose in the terrariums. Hope to get into diversifying my isopod collection someday, as they are indeed fun to watch… Never thought I’d say that.
Where I live (Northern Poland) we have gray isopods that hide between rocks or old bricks. I used to see them all the time as a kid, but had no name for them untill I watched Snake Discovery. Where I study (Poznań) I once found, right outside my faculty, a shiny black isopod that could conglobate! It was so cool, I didn't know they could do that then. Being 2 minutes late was completly worth looking at the lil guy.
The ones i remember growing up would not roll up and most of them were grey color, then you some times run into rare ones that are purple or red orange. The babies would grow under the belly, you can see them moving until they were big enough.
i love watching you channel , very cool how you bring in guests to give feed back and expertise on such a diversity of animals/insects!! kinda queasy to watch at times but i love it! I would like to hear more about the locations of animals/insects and where you might find them. i have a hard time when people kill ants when they do not realize the diversity they can bring to our enviromets..
My first experience as an adult with terrestrial isopods was an animal behavior experiment in one of my college classes. Nobody had a clue why the random assortment of common isopods had random unusual colors, now I know
You had me at 5 Isopods. I tried loosing a few small run of the mill Pillbugs and Woodlice in my Toads tank hoping they'd live to do their jobs. She doesn't use most of her tank so I have pet plants too.
I have a hermit crab tank and had to leave it for about a week due to a flood in my building. When I got them back a colony of local native isopods had moved in and lives with them quite happily as their cleanup crew.

I absolutely adore isopods. I'm always helping pill bugs get out of danger. They sure love walking in travel paths!
Clints excitement is infectious! Great video. Thank you for showing us all this Russ!
You’re welcome!
@@Aquarimax Thank you for the info!
Clint sliding in that beautiful Jurassic Park reference. Loved it. Im not super keen on insects in general( I do love tarantulas) but Isopods are super cute. It is a factor pushing me to make my enclosures bioactive.
Please do a setup for one of these. No idea Isopods collecting and breeding was a thing.
I've loved isopods for YEARS I had no clue there were so many!! Thank you guys for showing us the lovely worlds of isopods! 💙
I love the pros and cons! We should have pros and cons at the end of each reptile video to round out the 5 categories! Great videos, as always
T3
Im really here for this collab tho! You guys already need a part two. I know Russ has more to show. And Clint has more to be impressed with!
All these isopods are conglobatingly stinkin' rad!!
He seems like a very nice guy. Always genuinely happy to talk about the little critters
This is probably my favorite episode so far.
I LOVE isopods!
this guy is the young version of Mr Rogers, such a warm hearted soul!
me before this video: "wild that people have woodlice as pets now"
me after this video: 😭😭😭🥰🥰🥰 "I must have all sixteen immediately"
I don't think I'll ever live without dwarf whites and dwarf purples tbqh
I love rolly Polly’s. One of the few bugs kids can be around and not be afraid. So chill. Their antenna always inquisitively scanning
I'm not the biggest fan of isopods in general but I really like the Dairy Cows. Also I recently donde out about pseudarmadillo spinosus, which are now by far my favorite isopods
I have dairy cows they are so beautiful to look at.
@@Iridescentunicornfarts I gree! In the 2 bioactive set ups that I have, I keep dairy cows. They're beautiful and ferocious lol
@@jpslizards I wish they weren’t so scared. They hide whenever I’m near the tank. I have lots of huge ones.
@@Iridescentunicornfarts yeah they run to hide lol although if they didn't my Boyds Dragon would eat them too easily lol
I have 5 colonies of isopods. A couple of them are ones that were shown in the video. I love watching them run around. It's great! 😊
I can't express how adorable this whole segment is.
i just got rubber ducky isopods yesterday... AS ALWAYS PERFECT TIMING
Your channel has made me love insects, I have always loved isopods
That The Offspring reference. Quick, Clint, quick.
They really are perfect, its like having a herd of miniature cows
Russ's enthusiasm really shone through in the opening lol
"I think the Offspring tried to warn us about that." - I laughed. Nicely done.
I know when he said that my eyes lit up!
I'm 100% certain that I have a bunch of dwarf whites in my indoor greenhouse. I was looking for a colony to purchase, but now that I know that I might already have a colony of my own, I just need to make them a habitat. Very informative and entertaining, thanks!
My most favorite little bugs ever!!! I have loved “Rolly Pollies” since I was a tot! Great to see so many different species. Great job Clint!
It is amazing how excited you got about rolly-pollies and larger isopods.
I have zebra isopods and I absolutely adore them. I've had them for about two months and I've started seeing lots of little babies already
i never thought I would find them so interesting. You kicked me right back to my childhood days where we would make them roll up and play with them. My favourite were the red ones and the ducky. Isopods seem to be one of the most peaceful of the "creepy crawlies".
I was able to insert toxicognaths into conversation for the first time yesterday! Was as great as you hyped it up to be :^)
Hello! Just purchased my very first isopods! Dairy cows are roaming the lands of my making lol Thank you for providing me with information so I could make a good decision!
Every time Clint sees a new animal: I think this is one of my favorite [insert species] I've ever seen!
Wonderful informative video! Thank you...😊
My aunt: "Who the heck would even LIKE those nasty things? They're woodlice, garden pests!"
Me: Has an "I brake for Roly-Polies" bumper sticker, and actively loves my local backyard colony for the heck of it!
Perfect timing as there is an exotic pets fair in my town today and these little monsters have been featuring more frequently of late.
came home with a 12 count A. Maculatum "Zebras" and two 50 count Dwarf Whites.
Thank you for asking the cleanup crew question for all of them, this helps a lot in researching for my bioactive!
Never in a million years would I have expected to hear myself say "I need pet Isopods, now!" but here we are.
Isopods bring me joy I love catching them in the wild such neat creatures 😁
The ones i remember growing up would not roll up and most of them were grey color, then you some times run into rare ones that are purple or red orange. The babies would grow under the belly, you can see them moving until they were big enough.
Loved this video, and the enthusiasm you both have about the hobby! Thank you for all the quality content you produce!
Thank you!
I’ve always loved them! As a small child I loved watching them roll and u role!
I remember Rolli Polli when I was younger! They were fun to play with 😃
The one we see a lot r the grey one 😶
i love watching you channel , very cool how you bring in guests to give feed back and expertise on such a diversity of animals/insects!! kinda queasy to watch at times but i love it! I would like to hear more about the locations of animals/insects and where you might find them. i have a hard time when people kill ants when they do not realize the diversity they can bring to our enviromets..
So cool! I'm definitely going to start keeping isopods after watching this. I never knew isopods were so beautiful and verried
