  • This is a Turbine powered RC boat owned by a German hobbyist.
    The turbine generates 8 kilowatts of power and drives a gearbox.
    The propeller is driven by a flex shaft and rotates 20,000 rpm.
    The boat holds 2 liters of fuel and has a run time of 5-6 minutes.
    2 electric fans in the deck blow air into the hull to cool the exhausts, which becomes 650 °C during running.
    It's an awesome piece of engineering, props to the builder and owner!

      Thanks, but the credits go to the German owner for showing this great piece of Engineering! By the way.. he had 2 Mystic 184 with twin turbines as well! 😮. Unfortunately, I missed the running of them.

    Do you have any contact info from the builder? like Facebook or something? I've been trying to come up with a way to do this for so long since they stopped production of the SPM5 turbines. Making a totally custom gearbox would be crazy spendy but running a pully and belt system like shown is absolutely genius. Would love to chat with the builder. I cannot believe i stumbled upon this as id been day dreaming about this for years now. Let me know thank you!

    why is it so slow?

    • @CozyRC
      @CozyRC  5 месяцев назад +1

      Turbine power is not the fastest. It's about the engineering and the thrill of the sound. Also, when the boat flips, the turbine is total loss, so the driver is very careful!

      @@CozyRC that sounds like awful engineering to me.

      @@CozyRCwhy would the turbine be destroyed? Yes it would obviously shut down from water ingestion but it should be destroyed…

    • @CozyRC
      @CozyRC  5 месяцев назад

      @eliasbinde2629 Because it contains very fine impeller- and fan blades, made with high precision tolerances. The turbine operates at 650°C and when it is suddenly submerged in water, it cools down too quickly, and the internal parts deform. Also, the bearings need replacement. I spoke with the German owner, and he explained me this. It happened a few times and he had to send the turbines to the manufacturer for revision.

    You better hope it doesnt injest water. The compresdor blades will get damnaged.

    Sure thought it would be faster ,I have gas boats that would smoke that thing for a lot less money. Hell I've got electric boats even faster. The guys in our club that have turbine boats are far faster than this one.

    • @CozyRC
      @CozyRC  5 месяцев назад +1

      You're right. This boat is not about being the fastest. It's just awesome that some hobbyists try different things. The total experience with the heat, sound and smell make it pretty unique. When the water would be smoother, the driver could probably keep the throttle longer. In the end, this drive spins 20.000rpm on the prop shaft, which is very similar to the gas boats. The thing is, if this boat flips, the turbine needs a full rebuild because of the extreme temperature change between operating temperature and the water. The fan blades will deform and the bearings need replacement too. In that sense, I don't blame the driver to take it easy 😅👍

      @@CozyRC I also fly turbine Airplanes ,So I get it, But when it comes to that style boat it's gotta be fast too. Boats are 2 dimensional not like planes so they either got to be very scale, very fast or they are boring. For me this boat is neither. To each their own you know.

      @@1BlackSheep this boat is a special build, with an airplane turbine, a normal twin turbine cat is capable of speeds above 160kmh, this build is about high engineering with a belt driven gearbox and nice details

      @@olieboll3675 Agreed, now that the SPM5 is no longer made for several years i've been trying to figure out a way to retrofit a turbo prop motor into MHZ 94" cat (also not made trying to find one). So far this is the best and only thing i've come across. I wanted to do a 94" large cat with two SPT15 jet cats as they're almost 20hp a piece but they also come with a gearbox that runs 15,000rpm as an option so doing this exact thing would be easier as you could be in the 25-28,000rpm prop range with a simple 2:1 belt drive ratio. 40hp in a 94" cat would also be freaking cool. They also make it in a single exit exhaust as well which would make this setup even much cleaner. Would love to get the info of the builder to ask questions.

      @@olieboll3675 I'm well aware of what it is there are guys in my boat club that have turbine boats. And I fly turbine airplanes. All the turbine boats I've seen in person (which are many) are far faster than this example. Nothing touches electrics for all out performance, I have riggers that run 130+mph. But thanks for thinking I know nothing, I've been running boats and flying airplanes since 1990. And in the mid 2000's was a sponsored pilot and On road and oval racer. So yes sir I'm aware of what it is.🤣

      Thanks! I made more video footage of the event, but this turbine powered boat deserved it's own video. I will share more content of this event. It was very windy unfortunately. The gas boats could handle it, but the FE boats were really struggling.
      Heilbronn looks very nice indeed! Mostly large (and expensive) hulls. I might visit there some day 😎👍
