J.I.D has blamed Funk Flex for the reason he “retired” from freestyles.
In a new interview with the Rap Radar Podcast, the Spillage Village MC admitted that spitting for Flex was a “childhood dream,” but the DJ’s muted response left him “a little upset” to the point he decided to pull back from doing freestyles altogether.

Funk Flex went crazy for Desiigner freestyle…. This is why people give their BEST freestyles to LA Leakers these past 4 years 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Facts
Yo Westside Gunn side funk was a clown a while back
I thought he almost cried when desiigner went up there lol
@@omaldeveaux7313 in fairness he said that because Flex wouldn't play their music on his station but they don't really make "radio music"
FACTS!! LA LEAKERS be getting the gems. At least they appreciate!
Vince Staples said he don’t freestyle because people be taking it for granted. This is a prime example. No one goes up to Tom Hanks in the middle of home giving an interview and says “hey do a monologue right quick.”
Vince did kill that last LA Leakers freestyle.
😂😂 rs tho
Freestyle is a regular part of rap though and has been since the beginning
@@ss4kaioken295 this is a false information. Freestyle was always it's own thing and was called Rap Batlles. Not every 90s rapper Freestyled many were horrible at it because it required a completely different skill set and does not lend itself well to song writing. Would you rather have "in da club" from 50 cent or have him throw a bunch of lines without any structure around them?
Freestyling is how you keep your skills sharp, it should be in your nature to just do it. no rapper should be chatting all boujie about Frees, only ones that do are the ones that only have bars from the albums
As a lover of Hip Hop from NYC, I’ve witnessed Flex go from supporting and saluting the real and true Hip Hop culture to following behind what’s mainly popular (in my opinion). JID is an INCREDIBLE AND IMPECCABLE LYRICIST and artist. Fukk anyone’s approval and always believe in yourself and the gifts you were given. Hope he returns to freestyling. 💯

I really miss old school mixtapes. People rapping over each other's best was fire. You just knew when a dope beat came out somebody was gonna rap on it
Listen to lil Wayne then. He dies that to this day.
It's crazy how that pretty much seem like a foreign concept or lost art to him. That's not something Lil' Wayne was doing specially. That pretty much used to be the only option. If you're getting original beats it may as well be your album. Not a "mixtape" or whatever.
@@JugOnBlast yeah you’re wrong. Lil Wayne started the rapping over others beat thing. Might wanna go do a lil research by guy. It’s why he’s a mixtape legend. And he was doing it for free. That’s why he used others beats because he didn’t want to pay for beats for a mixtape in which he was gone drop for free. Single handily changed the mixtape game. I think you forget people didn’t used to put mixtapes out for free. They actually used to make money off them.

No wonder he quit... ain't nothing wrong with being a writer if u don't freestyle....a lot of rappers go on there and spit written rhymes.
I think both off-da-dome or pre written are impressive as ur not gonna remember all the raps for the freestyle so you're substituting words midway while keeping up the flow, like a puzzle that keeps changing while you're holding it together by adding pieces. Amazing
In the past decade the only person who has gone on Flex and spit off the dome was Tyler the Creator. Nobody goes on these major platforms and spits off the dome anymore.

That freestyle literally had my jaw dropped the entire time
JID's freestyle was legendary Flex wasnt being respectful to lyricism even tho Flex came from that era😪
Flex is a relic from the past and a reminder of everything that's disabled the next generation of NY rap. I also think he didn't hype JID cause of the bias a lot of people from up north have against non NY-esque music and artists
Exactly!
Flex has a comprehension disability. He don't catch bars, appreciate any schemes they're workin or any doubles, none of that shit. He makes stupid ass comments/ad libs & takes selfies while the MC is in the middle of their shit.
FACTS. All of it, but especially the relic from the past remark
We know what u got , can do and will FOREVER do J.I.D . Youre already CERTIFIED 😍
I think the freestyle is a integral part of a hip-hop scene. It doesn't necessarily have to be made up on the spot because so few rappers can do that at a high-level, and it would make most rappers look bad if they had to actually make it up on the spot, but if you don't have a 16 ready to go at all points to prove who you are and what you're about, then I think that says more to who you are as a rapper as far as preparedness. And most people discover new artist based on a quick freestyle they saw from an interview so it's important to be able to freestyle a good verse at any time it's like a rappers handshake.
To freestyle and not repeat the same boring and/or unoriginal bar is extremely impressive and we do take it for granted sometimes.
Jid just like me on an emotional level and I love him for it, been with him since 2017 and he still deserves all the love he gets
I’m a fan of all of it, just do what you wanna do man🔥 rap on someone else’s beat, freestyle, accapella, off the top, freeverse, etc this genre is like no other genre in the world💯 and this side of it, is what makes it so amazing💯🔥
The first thing I thought about was Wayne. It’s like that all over again except it’s JID, which we should be thankful for lmao.
JID hears bars different than everyone. His flows are so unique to him, but he can do ANYTHING 👑👑

the pterodactyl line was hard but don’t get it confused Kendrick used pterodactyl in his 2nd flex freestyle 9-10 years ago. Not tryna compare, both great in their own ways and honestly would love to see them on a song together one day, they touch similar flows and have high caliber lyricism
Am i the only one that cannot find full rap radar podcasts anywhere on the internet?
That freestyle went over Funks head that's why he reacted to way he did
Younger rappers n ppl might not really understand cuz the pride of being a great lyricist is treated different nowadays to a degree.JID is a year older then me we grew up in that 2000's rap city, freestyle friday,radio/mixtape freestyle era where rappers were always ready to rap n impress cuz freestyling is basically displaying your skills and alot of those situations got artist put on so I understand the pride behind wanting that approval even it's from a goofy like Flex because of his platform

Damn, yall used the worst part of the freestyle in this video haha. It's clear JID was trying to force a part that is written onto a beat that doesn't fit it. The lyricism and flow is on point there, just doesn't fit the beat.
YOU CAN HEAR WHAT ITS SUPPOSE TO SOUND LIKE, as he raps the same written bars at the end of his first verse on the song Mounted Up from DiCaprio 2. Check it out.
Spit a written ‘freestyle’ just for it to still not be on beat or say anything

So this is crazy I knew this was crazy! 2018s decaprio 2 he made the song mounted up! And that end of the freestyle is on there so it must be a dig at flex! The exact freestyle I knew that that was a crazy verse but the fact that he hold so much emotion in those bars to put that on a studio album is fucking nuts!!!!!
But he killed the freestyle tho lol.. flex dont determine if you nice or not i seen him bop his head to less lyrical dudes so his reaction dont mean shit as long as YOU & the fans know you nice thats what count the most ..can't let a dj discourage ya talent
For real... Flex is a clown!
@@Jimmy1982Playlists been one for years smh
EXACTLY. ...THE FUCK
Because we dissect freestyles so scathingly now, rappers have to have brand new, never before heard, never to be heard again rhymes just ready to go for these radio shows. So I could see why any rapper would rather just not do a freestyle. I thought JID did excellent on Flex and I was also surprised by Flex's reaction. But I don't think JID should let that make him feel like he didn't kill it. I think Flex treats freestyles differently now than the era JID was envisioning and Flex seemed to treat JID's presence on the show more as like a Dreamville connection instead of actually being excited to have JID on the show. "Cole I see you!"
yeah if he was a bit sharper he’d be able to see JID is the man, and not have to wait until he got popular to realize that
Crazy thing is that’s how I got hip lil homie. J. u killed that shit
Man that freestyle was crazy, that’s what put me on his music.
When did real rappers start caring about what silly people like Flex thinks? Be true to yourself... saying you stopped freestyling cuz some dude didn't give you shine is lame af, his show or not. Why even go on the record giving him that kind of power over you? People are 2 soft these days...
I get what you're saying, but the dude said it was a dream of his. And it ain't like that shit kept him from succeeding. It ain't like he's stopped rapping because of that. It's more of a "why waste my time if that's the reaction I'm gonna get?" typa shit. Mans was casting his pearls before swine 🤣

You didn’t hear the freestyle and it shows
I remember that freestyle, it was one of my first introductions to JID. Fuck if Flex didn't pop off, he killed that shit
I peeped that when i first seen it
I had to go back and listen to the freestyle to see if Flex was tripping or not, and to be honest, to do what JID did shows he can rap, because it's not easy to memorize all that and use different flows and stay on beat with 2 different beats. Don't know much about his music but I'd imagine that he probably makes pretty good music. As far as radio freestyles go though I get why Flex wasn't hype. If we're being honest he was rapping a whole lot of nothing even though he was doing so skillfully. That's not going to get it done in that setting. If you really want to get a reaction have to be saying something that connects. The punchlines and the wordplay have to have some kind of relatable connections to the listeners. I don't feel like Flex was unfair at all he was actually very polite for the performance because I've seen Flex borderline disrespect people for coming up there and spitting some nonsense.
I think JID is better as writer than a freestyler. You should definitely check out some of his work, especially his newest album. I think his talent lies in his story telling and flow switches, as well as his diction. I also really hope he gets back into freestyling like he says because it would only be a matter of time before he's one of the best.
