    We were new to this new home in 2010. Our toilets were always plugging with the smaller tank size of water the newer homes have. The builder told us to fill the sink and then flush and unstop the sink at the same time . It has worked great. In some of our bathrooms I run the tub and flush. He said the extra water running helps pull things along.

    1:50 porcelain and ceramic are both made from clay mixtures and fired (edit: rather their thermal shock is higher)--- They can take boiling water. It's not like glass where extreme temperature differences will cause the glass to expand or retract and explode or break. -- No need to be nervous about that.
    what Dawn or any soap does is that part of its molecular makeup is that one part of it is Hydrophobic and the other end of the molecule is hydrophilic, attracts water. This makes it a good use for scrubbing or cleaning dishes-- It will cling to surfaces; the hydrophobic end bunches around the surface and avoids water. The increased distance between the water molecules
    causes a decrease in surface tension, enabling bubbles to form-- this is also bad news for germs-- because if they are washed with soap-- they will either die from being mixed with trichlorocarbanilide which will help dissolve them or have their fluids sucked from them-- it also helps dissolve grease and stuck food. Will this work to unclog a toilet that filled with a ton of water? Probably not because soap works best on surfaces. You can probably skip the soap step.
    As for the hot water-- it could probably be cold water too but heated water could probably help in some capacity. The main thing that is taking place in this whole demonstration is the forceful introduction of a lot of fluid into the system, more so than just flushing would do, that has more ability to push whatever is clogged.
    Pouring a bunch of water, using a plunger, or using one of those sticker plungers all basically do the same thing. They forcefully move fluid through the system.

    Another thing to consider. If your home is an older home, have trees in your yard, locate your sewer line in the ground. Most plumbers are accurate in pin pointing it's location.
    Trees roots are notorious for cracking clay, cement, metal sewer lines.
    Tree roots absord the "water and other matter" for their survival, growth.
    If roots have invaded that sewer line no cleaner, plunger can clear blockages. Roto-rooter helps
    We had a home that regularly experienced blockages, the washing machine, shower, toilet all backed up. After the 3rd request for line clearing, the plumber told us our trouble was 2 fold.
    1) remove the trees along the sewer line route. Roots invaded the line.....or
    2) have a themoplastic line insert from city connection up to the house. Gets heated up for expansion and seals the line from the roots. ( Sort of heart angioplasty).
    You can also buy at hardware stores a liquid biological product that will "eat through" the blockage. Use this regularly, monthly, will maintain an open line.
    Another thing plumbers say to stop using are the garbage disposers.
    Food fats, grease plant material can also clog lines.
    Best way is to trash food waste into trash cans.
    We ended up removing the 10 trees. The roots were cracking the sidewalks, driveway and foundation. Ficus trees are a disaster. Dutch liquid amber are another bad root tree. Dont plant these near your home, they are a killer to the yard and cement work and home.
    We yearly have the lines reamed out. Biological product maintains clear passage.

    • @julietteyork3721

      We have ficus trees everywhere but can’t remove them at present. Do you know what kind of liquid biological product works to keep the lines clear? Thank you for your helpful post.

      Roto-Rooter tried to scam me and it is one of the biggest industry scams. They pretended that roots had invaded my pipes and that my pipes were cracked and I called a different company for a second opinion and that company came and proved to me that the 2 "other things" Roto-rooter had supposedly tried were fake. They hadn't even opened the cover of the pipe. The other company simply cleaned the pipe and all was well and it cost me less than $100 and they are the ones who told me that the scam works where they dig up the pipes and break them on purpose and then show them. There is a RUclips video where the worker running the scam accidentally broke the wrong pipe.

      @@julietteyork3721 There are enzyme cleaners that you can use even preventatively. After my Roto-Rooter trying to scam me incident, I learned that there are main drain cleaners. Now, I use one of those a few times per year. Though not in the dead of winter. I think I bought some at HSN.

    • @valerieann8007
      @valerieann8007 3 года назад

      @@wishingb5859 There's a different RUclips video about the best way to unclog a drain, where a guy put various things like dog hair, baby carrots, asparagus, grease, a small paper towel as well as a piece of pvc, and a rusty nail, in clear bowls and tried equal amounts of various chemicals on them adding water on top. The enzyme cleaner didn't dissolve anything, but maybe he used the wrong kind of enzyme.

    • @wishingb5859
      @wishingb5859 3 года назад +1

      @@valerieann8007 That is interesting. All I can tell you is that I haven't had to have the Rooter companies come since I have been using them, but I am using them preventatively. That person was causing a deep clog and then tried to use them. My last clog, I used something that was designated for clearing Main Drains and left it overnight and then flushed with boiling water. That was when I started using things like enzymes and bacteria monthly. Can't guarantee that it works because I haven't had a clog since then.

    A plumber once showed me that to unclog a toilet is to get a bucket of water, maybe 3 gallons, and slowly dump the water into the toilet. Usually, the extra water in the bowl will cause enough pressure to cause the clog to move. Clogged toilets happen a lot with kids, and that trick has never failed me. No Dawn, no other trick, but then maybe Dawn dish soap might work to clean out the toilet from minerals, and other water issues.

    Not sure if it is our cling wrap here (Scandinavia) but it almost doesn't cling to itsself with the same strength it used to decades ago. I've tried numerous times to do it and the just seal breaks. I put a plastic garbage bag & sealed around with gaffa tape & it worked once. Since then it hasn't worked. I will try taping the cling wrap seal & push down next time. Thx for the tip.

      For a preventative, don't use the 2 or 3 ply, or toilet paper advertised as "super strong". They don't break down very easily, so they often cause clogs. A few of the bad ones to stay away from are: Charmin Ultra Strong (red label), Charmin Ultra Soft (blue label), and Quilted Northern (blue and purple labels). Some good ones are: Charmin Essentials (yellow label), Cottonelle (blue label), and Scott Comfort Plus (orange label).

    I am genuinely not trying to be rude, not at all. So I am genuinely asking, are these meant as pranks?
    The first one I can't imagine working because the air trap, sometimes called a 'P' trap, would prevent the soap from reaching the point of the clog. There is literally no path to the clog because the water doesn't go above the trap... So when your toilet is clogged, the clog itself is most likely surrounded by air, not water. That said, even if it is early in the toilet at the top, or anywhere before the peak, the soap isn't going to do any breaking down of the offending material. That just isn't how it works... An example, take a bunch of greasy food leftovers, toss them in a food processor. Get it to the appropriate consistency, now take a rough sized amount and put into a bowl with all the soap you want. Now leave it for 20 minutes. Heck, leave it for a day...
    The second one... Although plausible in concept, in practice it is highly unlikely to work, the amount of pressure you could create is so miniscule when compared to a plunger. I was particularly disappointed when she tried to explain that she pushed the water down "when it was at the top...", ma'am, I am sorry, but the water just did as it is want to do... Reached its peak, and flowed over the top of the trap. 🤷‍♂️If you flush the toilet 3 times, once with nothing. Once with the cling film. Once more where you push down on the film as you would if needed... Then compare the videos, you will promptly find there was no difference in the behavior or flow of the water and blue dye... 😁
    Please don't take offense... I am not intending to be rude, or in any way making fun or insulting anybody.
    It is just important to me, from a moral view, to be open about my thoughts when a given claim is counter to the facts known about how a product (soap), or device (the toilet) works. If she knew how exactly the toilet works, and where most clogs occur, she wouldn't be pouring soap or reaching for a roll of cling wrap...
    But hey, hopefully someone learns something from what I've written here and spares themselves from playing the poo game with these rules in a friend's home at midnight... Use the plunger! No plunger? USE THE SCRUBBER! I assure you that it will work better than both of these suggestions... Combined...

      How does your method work?

    • @jakenkid
      @jakenkid 3 года назад

      @@julietteyork3721 I didn't specifically offer a method. That said, I have literally used a scrub brush to 'plunge' a toilet when a plunger was not available. Worst case, get a piece of sturdy wire and push it through the toilet to dislodge the offending material.
      It has been a while since I watched the video, and I can't recall if there was a specific reason given for not using a plunger or a scrub brush, but it is mostly irrelevant. The point was to prevent people from wasting resources and their time (which is also a resource, but one that can't be replaced) and playing around in poopy water. Lest we forget, she is doing this in a clean toilet, and I feel you'd be hard pressed to find someone that would *prefer* to start out with their hands in the thick of it when there7 are a dozen other household items you could try that would be effective...
      The soap one is truly most perplexing, because you could literally fill the toilet bowl with soap, and possibly never reach the clogging material...

      Well, I've watched several of these videos. The first one was a plumber who used the soap and warm water.😏

    Omg touch the "clean" toilet then touching the saran wrap which will more than likely be going on food.

      @@kaitlinwilhelm1660 the purpose of saran wrap is to store leftovers and keep them fresh. Of course its going to go on her food.

      I keep a roll of cling wrap in the garage for non food purposes. Not this one specifically.
      I actually don't use it in the kitchen anymore, I use reusable methods of food storage or at a press snap lock bags.
