I'd estimate around 2:20. I've only ever done three, last one was a 2:16 about 4 years ago and I've barely run since. Best was 2:10 in the first half of London in 2016 (my one and only marathon)
@@gtn it would have been about 1:30. I ran a 19min 5k after 5 weeks, and a 40min 10k after about 10 weeks, a couple of years ago, after 8 years only cycling (due to a bad skiing knee injury). Didn’t race a half for a while but ran a tempo training half in 1:34 not too long after
I recall when I finished racing admittedly not at conors level I took a couple of years out doing nothing then entered a 10k and rather nieve thinking I'd do 40 ish minutes----what I'd neglected in this scenario that I'd gone from 11st to 14 stone during the couple of years gap----doohh 😅😅.
Cheers for having me on GTN. Conor you smashed it hell of an effort, thanks everyone for the kind words my backs loads better (may have even raced some Moto) I reckon a redo is needed sooner rather than later or at least Swiss Epic race is done. Peace out everyone and happy running, swimming and riding 👊
I know Conor is tall, but running alongside Mark sort of puts the Irish lad's height into perspective. I love watching big-hearted Conor giving his best effort to each challenge. Good on ya!
Conor has a competitive streak that obviously made him an awesome cyclist. Now it's made him an awesome, very tall athlete. Love how he can knock over 457km in two days in Tuscany, then run a 1:39 1/2 marathon. Either of those would kill a mere mortal. Rich, hope that back comes right very soon. Conor still needs to beat you.
Again awesome to see GCN and GMBN trying running. Running is amazing once you are fit enough to run comfortably. Cyclist don't know what they're missing out on. Hank next and more from simon and Crew.
Love seeing this. As a former runner struggling to get better at cycling, it's nice to see the opposite folk struggle the same way. Misery loves company! Seriously though, great job gents. Awesome run pace.
I'm currently training for a sub 1:40 Half Marathon and seeing how 'easy' it was for Conor on his first attempt makes me super jealous. The big aerobic engine of a Grand Tours cyclist is no joke!
Connor's sub 1:40:00 is legit fast . I got into long distance running in 2020 (start jogging in 2019 from couch), and till date i have yet to crack into sub 1:52:00 hm
At this rate, if Conor can figure out how to swim open water at a 1:35'ish/100m pace, he will be doing a sub-5hr 70.3 in no time. That run time for a beginner is crazy.
Well done Conor. Clearly some base fitness comes across from cycling but I was still impressed by your 5K time let alone your half marathon. Hope you keep it up, even if only for the cross training benefits
That’s a great time Connor, I’m many 1/2’s down the line and still looking to break 1.40, that said - I’m generally not training for them, just relying on miles in the legs. Will see what happens at Bedgebury in October 🙏🏼
Good job Conor! 1:39 is actually an amazing time for a first half marathon. Considering that you’re a pro cyclist, what’s your vo2 max value as you got into running and after completing this challenge?
These are great where you get the GCN crew to run. Conor actually smashed it a little too good, which removed some of the fun though :) Well done to Conor though!! Can't wait till part 2
a sub 30 5k for someone who never runs is a great start. I started last month and still am only at around a 32min 5k; and I come from a swimming and cycling background.
22-23 minute 5k for not being runners?????????? I expected 30 minutes. Geez, wish I was young again. For the half, Conor averaged 7:34 minute miles. Wow!
Aerobic fitness is aerobic fitness. I ran a 19 min 5k after 1 month of some running after 8 years of only cycling, at 43. No excess weight, efficient aerobic engine, etc. There’s only a few muscles that are different
I've got a video idea for you. Take a man and woman from The Running Channel, maybe Andy and Sarah, to train cycling for 8 weeks. Do the same thing with people from GCN, probably Manon and Ollie, but get them to train running for 8 weeks. See who can improve their time by the biggest percentage.
Given the running channel is a separate entity, I doubt it would happen. I think it would be a fun crossover, but the attitude seems to be 'anything running related can be handled by the tri-folks on gtn' and that's the end.
@@scriptosaurusrex but it's not really tri related. You're getting people to do disciplines they don't normally train and comparing their improvements. This wouldn't be the first RUclips collab lol it helps everyone grow.
@@TwiinStar1224 I understand your thinking. But I just don't see it happening. I think there's too much 'rivalry' (implicit, there's surely no actual pitchforks here) for this.
Rich, it sounded like you were running a bit flat footed (really heavy steps on camera) - hopefully the GT guys gave you some advice on shoes and stride exercises. It sucks when your back hurts.
I watched the ollie running video and I gotta say, I agreed with all of his points as to why he dislikes running. I also agree with Rich, "it feels like you're not goings anywhere fast" I used to joke with my friend that when you're on a long run you could be overtaken by a child on their first bike, how does that feel? with the engine of a ex-pro cyclist and couple weeks of solid training its very well possible to do well in running :-) you cannot compare that to people who have not many years training in their aerobic capacities.
Really cool to see Conner perform, i absolutely are faster on the run but cycling is something different for me, we want to se Conner do a marathon, real one with race bib
As a fellow Long Being like Conor I always found Fartlek/Rolling Intervals got me up to speed and the legs working best to support me rather than hammering into shin splits land plodding out the distance. When I was a plodder/short steps, I found trying to drop the hips an inch or two (ie. bent legs) really cuts down on shin pain... but I never felt fast or sustainably 10+km/h. Is that a thing, or more what my hockey-cyclist body has come across in pre-season training?
Top work, Conor! Didn't GMBN's Toff express an interest in running a half marathon, at the end of the "running rookies" film? How's he getting on with that?
Thanks!! Took a swig of water halfway and half a precision gel... probably should have had more though, but was scared of stomach cramps. Was good fun really enjoyed it :)
@@conordunne219 I'm struggling with run fueling myself. I can smash the gels on the bike, but I really struggle while running. I actually ran past you back in January in Bath. You must have been out filming. You were stopped at some lights down near the Tesco's on Windsor bridge.

Well, I have to say all this videos by GTN are a little bit disappointing towards running because they completely miss the opportunity to educate the viewers on running technique, body biomechanics and just continue to spread the false assumption that running is bad for your body and health. For anyone that is interested, running doesn’t have to be impactful on the body! We were designed to run, we’ve been running for millions of years from which just the last 50 we’ve been injured because one guy decided to change the way we land with a loner gait, and instead of using our natural shock absorbers and springs for energy return, our leg muscles, we are blocking that ability with cushioning and “shoe technology”. For your information a few years ago I also did 1:40 half marathon after 3 months of training. So, it's doable if you have base fitness built on the bike. Of course I do not recommend it to everyone. Depends on the person's fitness.

How fast do you think you could run a half marathon with 8 weeks of training? 🏃⌚👀
8 weeks in not efficient enough time to train. You need at least 16 preferably 20 weeks of training.
