Your 5-year-old video is still bringing joy to the lives of many. Everything I found online and on Genie's site blamed the sensors which were actually well aligned and working fine. I followed your guidance and after a bit of testing, it looks like the problem is resolved. After months of frustration with this thing, it's finally working properly and the total cost of repair was $0. Thanks!

My door worked opening and closing with the inside wall button but intermittently failed to open and close from the cars and the remote that came with the opener when it was installed 22 years ago. I opened the case for the electrical side of the opener and loosened and tightened all the screws that I could see that had electrical connections. At least 2 screws were loose enough that they could be tightened 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn. After tightening all screws both car openers worked as did the opener remote. Thanks for the tip - you saved me at least $200 for a service call!!!

I have a newer Genie model that doesn’t have bolts holding the ground wire. My ground is secured by a push-in connector. Your method still worked though. It’s been about a week now and my garage door continues to work as it should. Thanks for this great video and for helping me get my door to work!!

    Thanks for the video.
Although my problem was not exactly the same as yours, you did lead me in the right direction!
After removing the cover and inspecting the grounds, which were tight, three of them on my unit, all connected to the same screw. I noticed there was a black plastic round cam not seated on the rear of the drive motor.
Some dirt daubers decided to make a nest inside the cover and joined it with that sensor ring. After removing the nest, cleaning the ring, several of the gaps were completely filled with dried mud, and reinstalling it on the end of the motor my garage door now opens and closes normally again. I have had pretty good luck with my genie garage door openers as they are both over 25 years old and have been lifting heavy double doors the whole time!
This is not my first issue with dirt Daubers.
. I was working on my sisters Honda generator, which would only run for about two seconds and die. After pulling the spark plug and checking everything out. I would put it back in and the same results run about two seconds and die. I pulled three blisters on my hands, trying to get this thing running thinking it was a carburetor issue. At my wits end, I removed the muffler and tried running it without the muffler. It ran great. I stuck a screwdriver in the exhaust port of the muffler and low and behold part of a dirt dobber nest came out.
I have never bothered with exterminating dirt Dobbers, as I have never been stung by one, but after these issues with their handiwork, I may have to rethink who belongs and who doesn’t belong in my residence! Lol

You were spot on with unloosing and moving the ground wire around. It was the only part of this video that I did. Thank you for the research that you put into your discovery of one of the possible solutions to this problem.

Thanks a lot! Took me about 10 minutes to get it fixed. It wasn’t the ground, but it was a wire in front part of motor next to the right light bulb that wasn’t connected right. This genie is 12 years old. I thought for sure I needed a new one.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! All other videos I found pointed to the safety sensors not being aligned properly. After verifying that there was nothing wrong with my sensors, I kept searching and found your video. My garage door would open normally but when attempting to close, no sound, movement or light blinks would happen. So I found your video, opened up the back cover, disconnected/reconnected the two plugs and loosened/tightened the ground screw, and everything went back to normal! I'm sure you saved me around $200. Would love to buy you beer or coffee! THANKS!

my Genie was only 6 months old. I checked the ground. It was tight and everything around it was nice and clean. I thought - this can't be the problem. I decided to loosen the ground and apply grease and retighten. I couldn't believe it. That was the problem!! Thanks James1

Thanks again. And don't be too quick to give up on Genie... I've had mine for 15+ years and this is the first time I've had this issue.

SOLVED: What I found was that it was NOT the grounding wire for me. But this video did help me solve the issue. I have a Genie 2028. Same issue, will try to go down for 2 inch or so, then jerk back up. Here is the Problem and Solution for me:
Problem: 1 of the wire that was connected to the back of the unit that goes to the sensor was loose.
Solution: Gently pull each wire to see if any are loose, then replug that wire back in and make sure its tight.
(This may seem obvious but it was not, all wires were all the way in and you will not know until you pull one by one. When I initially took off the cover, checked all the ground and unplug and replug all the connectors and tested the unit, it worked great. Then when i reinstall the cover, the unit had the same issue again. I did that a few times and the exact thing happened, it was driving me nuts. Then finally I decided to pull each one of those wires in the back of the unit that was connected to the sensor, Whoalla, one of those wire was loose. Reinstalled the cover and everything is working great! What happen was when I removed the cover, it caused the loose wire to have a temporarily connection allowing the unit to work and as soon as I reinstall the cover the temporarily connect broke off.)
Hope this can help anyone with the same issue.

Awesome video! Thank you for making it! This solved my issue as well. I had a slightly different version but once I opened it up, I reseated the ribbon cable and other wide connector and then loosened and rotated the ground wire to clear any corrosion (none was evident but still worth doing). Plugged it in and all is well! Thank you again!!

Thanks! Mine was actually pushing the garage door forcefully when closing. I found out the stopper sensor was corroded. Sanded down the terminals because they were green instead of copper colored, then used a tester to check for continuity. Now it works just fine!

Thanks James for posting this I just removed one from a home that was getting a garage upgrade to a permitted apartment with it's on address believe it or not. But it's a genie and its about 10 years old. This was my first garage door Removal/Install but with the help of you tube and a dewalt impact it wasn't that hard. I basically just had to make a few changes because the old garage door at my house was a really old and very heavy spring loaded wooden framed garage door that was very very dangerous. The side spring was Under immense pressure. And I speak on that just as a reminder to anyone messing with the springs that you need to be very very extremely very careful. Because if I would have made one wrong move o would have chopped my arm off. I removed 2 of 3 lag screws before moving my impact to the top out of harms way and it literally threw my arm back and slung the impact across the room. (I was thanking God and still am that I moved my arm because it came down with about 2,000 lbs. Of force. It would have been very ugly. So back to your post. My close option isn't working it raises up very smoothly and regardless whether it works or not(your fix) I do appreciate you taking time to post because it is very helpful to many people. Its amazing the task I've completed by looking up these post. Keep posting and I will too. So our lives can be less troubled and hopefully learn something and save some money along the way. Kudos James.

Thank you James... i was having the same EXACT issue, did what you suggested and now it works. My garage door would close, then pop back open. I found 2 problems.
    1) The "Closing Stop" sensor slid towards the wall and was not shutting down the motor soon enough.
Easy adjustment. I suggest using a Sharpie to mark the location.
    2) The BROWN wire for the "Closing Stop" sensor was not getting power. The wire was loose in the wiring harness where the brown wire plugs into it. The GREY "Opening Stop" sensor wire was getting power. I fixed the BROWN wire connection. Problem solved. A Harbor Freight volt meter was needed for testing.

My dad bought a garage door just like this one. We have yet to install it. I hope it doesn't have any issues. If it does have issues we'll return it and get another brand. This issue in this video is unacceptable they need to do better quality checks!

This did the trick for me, ground wasn't making good contact. A little fine sandpaper to the connector and the metal housing and garage is shutting again. Only bad thing is while I was working on this i took a look and noticed that one of the two tension springs were broken. looks like it's time to call the repair guy.

It was the ground set screw. The opener unit shakes violently during opening and closing of the door. There is bound to be some loosening of connections over time.

I wonder if the power for the motor actually runs through that ground connection. Wouldn't think so though.
If it's just a signal ground with no current running through it, I wouldn't think it would be so prone to coming loose on its own like it apparently is on so many of these.
Maybe a factory assembly deficiency, from not properly torquing it down when they put it together.

I'm thinking that's an older unit, the new ones with the DC motor are totally sealed and quiet, thier actually very good

I had same problem .......make sure your light bulb works. It will tell you what your problem is. Flashing === photo eye. . no flashing === motor controler.. Thanks i fixed it .......

So I had NO/natta LED LIGHTS or 12 VDC at the sensors or the terminals on the head unit. Both sensors were dead - no LEDs. Took 12 VDC battery and placed it on the sensor leads hot/red gnd/green to check the sensors directly for LED. After connecting only one sensors to the 12 VDC, magically both sensors came back to life. Further, I removed battery and they stayed energized. All works well now. Must have reset something in the 12vdc circuit. BTW, I did this with the unit plugged in. I dont recommend a doing this unless you understand a little about DC voltage. BTW, prior to this, I did move all connectors and tighten the ground but the sensors remained LED unlighted. Something about the battery voltage seemed to kick the circuit into normal ops. Now the head unit terminal has 11 vdc on it consistantly and both LEDs light. ???? Not sure what actually happened here but this is what I did, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK if you choose to do so. INITIAL CONDITION, door would open but would not close like sensor was detecting something under the door. Note too that the wall unit would close the door if I held it in to the fully closed. Remote only worked to open door, not close door. Thank you and Cheers!

OKAY, SCRATCH ALL THAT!!! Problem came back - 12VDC circuit problem. Must have flash a cap enough to keep it on for a little while. Back to the drawing board. Any help appreciated folks on where the DC voltage circuit comes from, likely the crkt card. Best all...

Ordered new card from Genie, problem solved. 11VDC measured on terminas after new card install.
