I could listen to the delicious blues line for days! This remarkable combination of Bonham and JPJ hits the dead center of the blues pocket like no other combo in the game! Music would have never been complete without the superior amazing ability of the four Gods of Rock!❤❤❤❤❤
Carl Baldassarre, a composer, describes Led Zeppelin as a "swinging" band. I think that accurately accounts for the swag in their sound. From bass, drums, guitar, & vocals...man, they killed it on this one!
The MIGHTY>>>MIGHTY Zep...never duplicated never replaced as the greatest band ever. And JPJ is a real monster on the bass on this one. He is so talented it's criminal.
Every time i go back and listen to something off One,Two or Three.I say "this really show cases ALL four guys at their best "...over and over again......but ,here we go again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great reaction Andre, Dominika! For me, the real standout on this track is John Paul Jones with the basslines...it's just SO groovy (and intricate). Of course the drums, guitar & vocals are top notch too - it's Zeppelin - their sum was always greater than their parts! Such a sexy tune. Always felt dirty singing along with it, but loved it so! Cheers from Canada, eh!
Totally agree about JPJ's bass playing on this hit! Page does mind-blowing, fire-starting riffs on his axe; prime example of his professional, musical capabilities. More LZ surprises on future albums, too; always changing, always creating new sounds. The Blues was famous for the "call and response," or "beck and call" vocal/lyric and/or instrumental back-and-forth communication. LZ used it successfully, as Dominika aptly points out, between Plant's voice and Page's guitar calling out each to the other.
I love you both and think both of you are equally fun and exciting to watch ... such a delight !!! So full of wonder and appreciation ... you bring back all the feelings we got when WE first discovered them. Happy belated Thanksgiving to you both and early Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!
This is the album my friend first played for me in 1969. I had never heard hard rock before. Didn't even know what it was. My parents listened to country music and my older sister listened to soft rock so that was all I had been exposed to. Then I vwent to spend the weekend with my high school buddy and this was the firstslbum he put on his stereo. I fell like I was transformed into another world. Needless to say I went out and bought this and s Black Sabbath album. From then on my collection consisted of nothing but hard rock. Thanks for the memories ❤❤❤
About the same year I wanted to start my own LP collection. I didn't know what band to start with so I asked my friend Neville what he thought was a great band. He told me to checkout Led Zeppelin 1. I bought it and played it on my mothers mono player. I was disappointed at 1st. I played it through and didn't like it, maybe because it was too different to what I was use to hearing on the radio at the time. Because it was the only LP I had, I played it again and again. I totally fell in love with them and are still my favourite band. Could wait for albums 2,3,4&5 to come out. My only regret is I did not save these original copies. Probably worth a bomb today?????
@nigelpruden734 First album I heard was Led Zeppelin 2. Blew me away the minute I heard it. Never wanted to listen to anything else after that. Maybe the difference was hearing it in stereo. It's always better through stereo. Today I'm a 71year old metalhead and will be til I leave this earth. In facti have made my son promise me that at my funeral they will play Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding in My Hands by Elton John. I want to go out rockin'. I don't want it to be a sad day.
Your reaction to this classic is so very reminiscent of how we all reacted to this the first time we heard it. Nobody had heard anything like it before. And JPJ put on a master's clinic on blues-rock bass like nobody else. The whole thing was unimaginable to us until we heard it for the first time. It turns out that Zeppelin's music is 90% about sex, 8% about drugs, and 2% about citrus fruit. 😀
Thanks as always for doing my pick, thought you would get a kick out of this one!… As you know, their diversity is incredible and on each album there is diversity but they also quickly evolved musically from album to album. This song has everything to do with what they were doing in 1969. Blues based hard rock, call and response between Jimmy and Robert, etc. Just one year later on Zeppelin III they really got more deeply into acoustic music and a year after that they were doing Stairway to Heaven, which is quite different than the Lemon song! My point is they would not have done Stairway in 1969. That’s not where they were at yet. But only two short years later they evolved and then before you know it a couple years later they’re doing Kashmir with eastern influences, quite amazing really!
A remake sort of, a filthy song. Love it. Killing Floor by Howlin' Wolf 1964. Howlin' Wolf is named as a co-author, "squeeze (my lemon) till the juice runs down my leg," can be traced to Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" 1937.
First of all, I love two ❤ Secondly,I was in my bedroom. I was 12yrs old and was standing in front of the mirror doing all of Roberts' moves, listening to this song and then my mum walked in just as Robert sang, ' Squeeze my Baby as the juice ran down ĺeg ' Her reaction " Oh,Alan " then left my room 😁
I was lucky enough to have seen Led Zeppelin in concert in 1975. I had the worst seats ever...behind the stage (not to be confused with "backstage"). We were at least very close...just a few rows from the stage. John Bonham was sick, actually vomiting into a bucket in between songs. We assumed without any evidence that he had too much to drink. His playing didn't suffer...he was a beast! The other memory I have is actually briefly locking eyes with Jimmy Page. The band left the stage during the drum solo, for a bathroom break or whatever it is rock stars do when they leave the stage. Anyway, as the drum solo nears its end, I noticed Jimmy had snuck back on stage and was standing at the side of the stage watching Bonham. I said to my buddy "There's Jimmy" and pointed, and right at that instant Jimmy just happened to look my direction. As I said, we were close, and he obviously saw me pointing at him. And then he started dancing to the beat. And that's about the end of my memories of the concert, other than Jimmy played really well while Robert disappointed a little. The 2 Johns were fantastic.
Have you ever heard david bowies 1970 ground breaking album.... the man who sold the world. It is my favourite bowie album. Every song is very good. Nirvana played when sound track to the album on their epic unplugged record. If you like bowie, this will blow you away❤. Scott, Bournemouth England .
Pagey is so shy for being such a legend, met him a few times thru his girlfriend Scarlett who is a dear friend of mine....Jimmy produced every album by LZ.... sweetheart of a guy btw with a great sense of humor that most people don't see🙏🏻
This was one of the songs they were sued over. Robert hadn't changed the lyrics from Howlin Wolf's "KILLING FLOOR," from which this song is based. My favorite Zep song to jam with on guitar.
But if it wasn’t for bands like Zeppelin, it’s arguable these old blues masters would have faded into relative obscurity and never been brought to the mainstream. The rock bands that followed them (like Zeppelin) brought interest to the old blues men, which, in turn, enhanced THEIR estates.
I been listening to zep for 55 years and music even longer. And when asked about this subject Page said ask Plant. Because this really to me sounds very little like killing floor. But it's Robert's fault for adding lyrics to songs that really weren't that song
Two gems that were hidden for years… travelling riverside blues and the girl i love got long black wavy hair. And these songs were not polished, just as raw as you can get. Enjoy🤘❤️
This is a version of Killing Floor by Howlin’ Wolf from 1964. Howlin’ Wolf was Chicago blues musician. The killing floor was part of a slaughter house in Chicago where the animals were killed before being butchered. Being “down on the killing floor” became slang for being in a bad situation especially in regards to a relationship with a woman.
I wanna see my children down on this killing floor....after squeezing his lemon till the juice runs down my leg, is talking about literally what it says. Drippage.
After a few incredibly popular albums, plus their combined talents, there were lots of rumors that Led Zeppelin had sold their souls for incredible talent. Jimmy's fascination with the occult and Alister Crowley (he bought his old mansion) made many think their rise to stardom was not natural.
This is Zeppelin's take on Killing Floor, Slash released a version of this in his recent Blues album, with Brian Johnson in the vocals and a special appearance by Steven Tyler on the harmonica, well worth checking out.
Since Rock, country, jazz, big band, ragtime, and even rap are ALL BASED ON BLUES music, most music today has a blues edge to it since almost all modern song structure is based on the same chord progressions, and the scales used on all the solos.
So much fun seeing your faces light up while you’re hearing all those things that I heard “a long time ago….” I’m 67, I was just discovering FM radio when this was out, saved my money and started buying albums. I still have the first 4 albums, lovingly worn, long since replaced by CD’s. Perhaps you would also enjoy the band “Uriah Heep” in particular, the song “Stealin’” You two are great together, thanks.
It was not an accident that these four genius musicians came together, meant to be, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Robert Plant,John Paul Jones. Jimmy Page created this band, he Auditioned Robert Plant, after a really short period of time they just gelled. Keep up the music,😊

This is one of 6 songs that Led Zeppelin was accused of borrowing (stealing?) lyrics and licks from American blues musicians. When they originally played it live they even used the actual name of the song. Killing Floor. However when it came out on the album, the title was changed and Howling Wolf was not credited. Howling Wolf was later given credit for the song. Slash and Brian Johnson do the song on Slash's new album Orgy Of The Damned and it's a KILLER version. Well worth a listen.
this would be classified as "electric blues" --popularized by artists like B B King, John Lee Hooker, and Howlin Wolf in the 1940's through 1960's. if you listen to their music, you can hear how strongly zeppelin was influenced by that style. electric blues players were actually using distortion years before metal players used it.
Two old blues songs stuck together, Howling Wolf's Killing floor and the other dudes name I forget Blind something or other the line Squeeze my lemon taken from one of his songs. The owner of Howlin Wolf publishing sued them and they settled out of court. LZ were in and out of court numerous times. Even the name got them in legal hot water had to change the spelling .
John Paul Jones was the glue that held Zeppelin together. Bass, piano, keyboard, mellotron, mandolin....he did it all.
JPJ absolutely brought that bass up to another level on this one..., a maestro
He was led zeppelin's secret weapon.
The silent assassin..
The way Jonesy drives his bass thru this song is just Epic! So masterful 😊
I saw a chart where someone divided Led Zeppelin songs by meaning. The 3 sections were Sex, Hobbits and a sliver of Citrus. LOL
Perfect!
😂
😅
And one hangman😂
I think you forgot the category of "Babe".
'You can be a dead person, you come back to life'
Fantastic!
'Bout time you got round to this! That bass!
Greatest Rock n' Roll band EVER!!! This song, "The Lemon Song" is No. 1 one my list!!!!
I like the bass line on this. It’s epic. Good song John Paul Jones is not given enough credit for his musicianship Great choice and reaction
This is just one of the thousands of reasons as to why they are the greatest that ever was.
I could listen to the delicious blues line for days! This remarkable combination of Bonham and JPJ hits the dead center of the blues pocket like no other combo in the game! Music would have never been complete without the superior amazing ability of the four Gods of Rock!❤❤❤❤❤
JPJ absolutely killing that bass!
John Paul Jones just pluckin' that bass riff ✌💖☮
Carl Baldassarre, a composer, describes Led Zeppelin as a "swinging" band. I think that accurately accounts for the swag in their sound. From bass, drums, guitar, & vocals...man, they killed it on this one!
I’ve never clicked so fast on a video - love the lemon song and absolutely love watching you guys discovering my favourite band, always a joy ❤
Led Zeppelin greatest band of all time❤
Finally❤
Now, I'm gonna crawl❤
I saw them do this live in Cleveland in 1969 before the second album was released! BLEW US AWAY!❤😂
Doug ... Was at the Boston show.
Has there ever been a better bass guitar performance on record? I doubt it. Great reaction guys. Best wishes from England 🏴.
That bass though...
The MIGHTY>>>MIGHTY Zep...never duplicated never replaced as the greatest band ever. And JPJ is a real monster on the bass on this one. He is so talented it's criminal.
Greatest rock band ever!
This is my personal favorite from LZ, even after 5 decades. Everyone is at their best.
My favorite Zep album. Every song is great.
Every time i go back and listen to something off One,Two or Three.I say "this really show cases ALL four guys at their best "...over and over again......but ,here we go again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me this was the peak time of Robert Plant vocals.
Great reaction. Great song off of a great album.
Great reaction Andre, Dominika! For me, the real standout on this track is John Paul Jones with the basslines...it's just SO groovy (and intricate). Of course the drums, guitar & vocals are top notch too - it's Zeppelin - their sum was always greater than their parts!

More excellent Led Zeppelin from their 2nd album❤❤
I saw LZ at the Forum in LA in 1977. The place went nuts for three hours.

Glad to see you two smiling from a Led Zeppelin song. Makes me happy that you're enjoying what i heard many , many times. 👍😎👍
Lemon,baby Absolutely amazing
I'm sweating! Lol! You and everyone else. It never gets old. Have heard this 1000 times. 🤣
It’s very hard picking a favorite Zep jam, but this is one of my favorites.
Robert’s voice goes right to your soul! Your smiles where from ear to ear I love it 😁
A long time coming !
The notes that Page plays during the squeezing section always makes me
smile !...👍👍
Your reaction to zeppelin is priceless! Love it 😅❤

I was going to write nearly the exact same comment. Thanks for voicing our opinion!

Yall are feeling this one!!!🎉🎉🎉❤

Hahahaha 😂
One of their best the bass and drums stand out fantastic track
Glad your doing the studio version.
This song shows the funk side of ZEPPELIN.
They have reached a whole new level compared to other blues-based rock bands of the time.
Blues + Zeppelin = CRAZY sounds!!! You are so right in your hypothesis!
What a song , John Paul jones is fantastic on this
THE GOATS!🤷🏻♂️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
JPJ working his magic
Giving that Howlin' Wolf Classic the Led Zepp treatment. Good stuff.

As much as I love Led Zeppelin, I think it's time to get back to their contemporary and equal, Black Sabbath.
