Qbert is undoubtedly one of the coolest turntablists on/or off the planet. Very down to earth and personable, open to talk or share technique with anyone. While so many talk trash and throw attitude as their fame grows, Qbert lets the needle and record do the bragging and shrugs off impossible feats like it was basic. The man!
He makes it look so easy, it is not as easy as it looks! Like playing any other instrument, you won't be able to just pick up and play the guitar the first time you try
Just gotta' say that I love your tutorials here. It really shows your personality. Gives us a different view of you as a person. Also, you are beyond skilled. You're definitely top-10 bro. I can't forget DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mix Master Mike, Magic Mike, the guys from C2C, and many more. But it's more like a tie at probably #3 or #4. Hahaha..... Thanks again man!
I've never scratched before, but i have played musical insturments, it's just like any thing else, get the technique down slow, play backing tracks at different tempos to slowly build up speed, but make sure your hitting every beat on time every time, don't just skip a tempo cause you got it right once.
it also seems as if hes doing them in a flare type fashion, meaning hes getting the extra "ghost" click sounds at the beginning and ends of his pull movements, so you gotta try to get your crabs to fit in btw your hand movements. basically replace a 1 click or 2 click fader motion with crabs and with a 3 finger crab u will get 5 sounds instead of 3 if implemented in flare fashion, also he adds little tears n shit to his basic scratches that the eye can barely see but i can sure hear em
Hey Q !! I download a few tutorials of you in the early 2000's. My DJ career has been so much intresting ever since. wish equipment were affordable here tho..
For those people wondering what's better: A reverse fader or a normal fader, it's whatever YOU feel used to and whatever YOU can do. For me, it's easier to do a crab at a reverse rate but it's easier for me to do others like the Chirp or the Transformer in a normal fader mode. It's whatever sounds cleaner and better :)
Hey Q! Great demonstration! Im getting closer and closer to the "chreeeeep"-scratch :D But one more question: Where can I get those pink linefaders? :D Mixercustomasation is bliss :D
I'm learning this right now from you I DJ Hempstead you know how to deal with the other hand too or is different cuz it feels funny when I try to do it with the right hand that I already know how to scratch with but the left hand I don't really know too much but I can do it better the crap I'm talkin about
Maybe the Z2, since it's the least expansive mixer on the market with Innofaders. You can run it as a stand alone or run with Traktor. Otherwise look at the used market. If you are just a turntableist without Serato/Traktor maybe pick up a used Rane 56S @ ~$700
@wwefan6755 You can use whatever the hell you want as long as the sample is noooice...however if it's a record you really love ...keep in mind over time it willl deteriorate the sound quality of the record.
This is so many levels beyond impossible for me. I've been trying off and on to learn how to crab for years, YEARS, and I still can't do it. What I' have learned is that my thumb is too strong/stiff, (work with my hands) and refuses, utterly refuses to work as a spring.
q-bert I practiced the crepe/crab? scratch and I finally got it but my fingers cant move near as fast, any tips to build speed, like hand exercises or something.. or will the speed come in time?
Originally named the Crape Scratch, and later called the Crab scratch because no one knew the correct name? But Coincidentally the technique resembles a running Crab.
Can anyone help me out? Isn't his thumb supposed to be holding the fader against the other end of the cross fade section? I thought that's how scratching was supposed to work. To cut out the sound into bits and pieces by keeping the fader on the other turntables side, and taping it into the right side to get sound? Thanks.
Is this scratch harder to do on the NS7? I Sware I'm doing the movement of the fingers right I just can get the sound! Or is it a little of both hands? What am I doing wrong?
Crab is such a better name though. I like the story about the history, but the scratch really does look like a crab walking on the fader hand. When I first heard the name I thought that was why

+D Sands Wait.. or off?
NASA HAS A DJ PROGRAM NOW?
DJ Q-Bert makes the crab scratch look easy when it's really harder than you think! I tried so many times and couldn't get it right.
Never tried to scratch, but after watching this video, I wanna have a go. Really good video. Thanks.
He makes it look so easy, it is not as easy as it looks! Like playing any other instrument, you won't be able to just pick up and play the guitar the first time you try
@@TURK_182 EXACTLY
I think DJ Qbert is the best with the crab scratch and taking any song and make his own song/beat...
Just gotta' say that I love your tutorials here. It really shows your personality. Gives us a different view of you as a person.

@Qbertskratch nice job bro! Ps Mike is awesome too!!
I can't wait to try that!
So some guy working in a restaurant in Lebanon helped name the scratch that everyone wants to do.
If he only knew
thanks for the useful info
THE MASTER IN ACTION
Damn, I always thought the crab scartch took this name cause the hand looks like a crab claw when you do it.
Haha I'm sure he's trolling
good of him to mention UKs dj excel. what happened to excel??
I got it now thanks Q I'm on my way up
what does he have at the back of his mixer?? that thing looks good keepin shit tidy, might have to make one of my own.
this is sick. cant wait 'til i get my dj equipment.
Cool shirt!
Hey Q! Great demonstration! Im getting closer and closer to the "chreeeeep"-scratch :D
But one more question: Where can I get those pink linefaders? :D Mixercustomasation is bliss :D
He's Darth Vader on the cross fader, cuttin records like a light saber
kendo512 Darth Fader in this way :D
Maspyke
Wow. Impressive.
Wunderschön ❤
How cooler was this set up compared to the one he uses today....
you make it look so easy :)
Word!
Nice
I've been doing the same hand movements and it does not make a sound nearly as close .
On the thumbnail you look like Bob the Builder lmao
+n00bie LOLOLOLOL
im so old, the last scratch i did was the Dr Dre scratch
I'm learning this right now from you I DJ Hempstead you know how to deal with the other hand too or is different cuz it feels funny when I try to do it with the right hand that I already know how to scratch with but the left hand I don't really know too much but I can do it better the crap I'm talkin about
looks like the mechanic in roller coaster tycoon
Is there a benefit from using the crossfader reversed, or is it just a personal preference for whatever reason?
🔥🔥
sounds like the caught crabs in Lebanon
does the crossfader fade to the turntable on the oposite side rather than the one on the same side that it is faded to?
whats dat extra movement your doing with the record when you are flicking fader movement
sensacional
Is There Any Music Playing On The Deck He's Crab Skratching on?
this is so fucking hard. crabs are the king discipline of scratching.
Personal preference.

SEBASTIAN BLIX. Rs i have 3 faders and i still can't do it either.
what is the sound hes using for the scratch cause i heard it from the shiftee qbert and rafik
I second that! Damn right
informational, but you're using hamster style, will you follow up with the same video using non hamster traditional 1..2..fader technique?
Has your mixer got a spring loaded crossfader?
Stock crossfader? or maybe pro x fade..
Dope!
How sharp do you make the crossfader though when doing this? all the way sharp or leave lil but of curve in the fader???
Bob the builder, can he scratch it? YES HE CAN
coooool.
q-bert I practiced the crepe/crab? scratch and I finally got it but my fingers cant move near as fast, any tips to build speed, like hand exercises or something.. or will the speed come in time?
all the way sharp!
Originally named the Crape Scratch, and later called the Crab scratch because no one knew the correct name? But Coincidentally the technique resembles a running Crab.
Is this course still available?
Haha, same here!
What would be a good inexpensive mixer? My fader doesn't have that feel.
O cara é muito foda!!!
You don't have to scratch Hamster style to do this, right?
At 0:23, why does the fader bounce back like that?
That fader is butter. Basically so smooth that it could deflect or ricochet off the end causing a bounce back.
You think its the stock vestax fader? Or an upgraded fader?
Pro Vestax mixers, especially two channel mixers always are butter stock. If I'm not mistaken they usually are all equipped with the Inofader.
I think his fingers moved 100 times a second!
Very very good, thank you!! Quelqu'un peut traduire en français???
(French vidéo possible) I love the scratch & DJ Qbert
The fukn man rite here, hope that I can get even a fraction of these skills someday..... 👍💪🙏😎🎧📀🥁🎛️🎚️🎼🎶🎵
Right OK I understand he has the fader reversed but will it sound just the same if it's not reversed?
Can anyone help me out? Isn't his thumb supposed to be holding the fader against the other end of the cross fade section? I thought that's how scratching was supposed to work. To cut out the sound into bits and pieces by keeping the fader on the other turntables side, and taping it into the right side to get sound? Thanks.
Crossfader is hamster style (reversed).
how can i get the samples Qbert uses for scratching?
I always thought they were emulating a crab walking.
Is this scratch harder to do on the NS7?
I Sware I'm doing the movement of the fingers right I just can get the sound!
Or is it a little of both hands?
What am I doing wrong?
@megatola me too!!
@BAYAWA101 No, either way.
what kind of price range are you looking at
Quelle est le modèle de cette table de mixage ? Merci.
Does anyone know the name of the drum track in the background?
1:07 mix master mike from beastie boys!
Let'em know.
7 people have suffered from crabs in their lifetime.
What's the name of the beat?
hahaha the "chrrrepe"
How the fuuuuck does DJQ only have 6.5k subs?
just a personal preference
Crab is such a better name though. I like the story about the history, but the scratch really does look like a crab walking on the fader hand. When I first heard the name I thought that was why
Q-bert has crabs... LOLOLOLOL
Everyone will sound slightly different when they scratch. Don't focus too much on sounding exactly like people you see!
If you try to sound exactly like Qbert, I'm sorry it's not going to happen!
