I've been looking at the rebel 500 for my first bike. I live on a dirt road and go birding on dirt roads. I'm glad to see I could put dirt tires on that bike. Thanks.
I love taking my rebel off road. It's a Honda, so naturally I know she will handle it without destroying my bike. The stock fat tires are fun and they roll over everything. When I see a dirt road I feel inclined to roost it through a few gears 👍🏽
I'm 64 and partially disabled. I used to ride a Yamaha XT225 off road and on dirt roads and trails. It finally reached the point where the seat was just too tall for me. I was ok once I got on, I was able to touch the ground fine. But getting on and off required standing on something. Then I realized that I could no longer fix a flat tire with tube type tires. I have bad knee and hip joints, and arthritis. I liked to ride way out into the AZ desert, and realized that when I had a flat tire (that's when, not if, the AZ desert is flat tire city, especially with tube type tires, due to all the thorns) I would be stranded, with no way out. Even if I had somebody I could call for help, they would have no way to find me. So I gave up and sold the XT. I decided to look for a small street bike with a low seat, but they all had tube type tires. Except the Rebel 300. I can't stand the looks of the thing, IMO the Rebel 250 looked 100 times better. But it had tube type tires. So I eventually found a used Rebel 300, and tried it out off road. It did surprisingly well for the kind of off road riding I do, kind of like in this video, but in the desert. I put a guard over the radiator, found a bash plate from a place called www.t-rex-racing.com, installed a rack on the rear fender, and have been riding it off road for a couple months now. It looks a lot better covered in dirt. I'm going to get some of these tires, and rig up some kid of side racks to attach saddlebags to, so I can carry some extra gas.
Very cool to come across this. I'm possibly looking at a 500, I want something both road worthy and off road capable. I live in Colorado and want something semi dual purpose but also lower on the price scale. I likely won't be doing much heavier trails than what I'm seeing in this video so I think I may be sold on it.
Coming back to the topic: 2 years ago I've given up on the MT60RS after some 18K km. They were usable still, but I changed them anyways as the front felt squirelly in sharp turns. Seems that they wear well, but don't age nicely(?) Anyways, replaced them with Michelin Commander 3s. These are true kings of road, and jesters off road. They work sublimely on (wet!) pavement and are really adequate on hardpack / gravel if dry. Won't do any good in mud, but if there's mud over gravel, they will grip well. Overall, after 4 years of ownership and quite a few rides out in the bushes with ill equiped adventure machines, I say that the rebel is the better machine to be on in a slippery situation.
I slapped these on my rebel 1100 and holy moly my bike is so much more nimble on corners! They do take time to break in though. Felt a bit slidey at first
Dude, God bless you! I bought just now a rebel 500 based in no small portion on your video. I like my bikes to handle a bit of rough riding. In downsizing from big ass gee-esses, which I realized are cumbersome, not awesome offroad and downright bad in town. I have seen the light. This bike is just what you need if you're honest to yourself
I would assume the difference in tire life is coming from a difference in bike weight. Full size, full kit ADV rigs @ max load will kill a softer tire in a hurry. Your Reb's a Snickers bar in comparison.
Really digging the feather trinket. I have a Falcon feather that I found in the woods years ago. Maybe this video is a sign I should get a Honda Rebel as my first ride.
This gives me a lot of useful information to consider. I ride my Rebel on pavement... But I live a quarter of a mile off the pavement down a dirt/gravel road that is either one of two things: very thick, ill-grated, large sized gravel OR no gravel at all / 100% mud bog. When it's gravel though - that stuff is rough on the ol' cruiser tires. I don't know if I'd save money in the long run going with something like these MT60RSs or if I should just continue with street tires. I also don't want to give up safety on the streets (but it sounds like that wouldn't be an issue with these Pirellis).
Can anybody please comment on the wisdom or lack there of, of putting Kenda K784 big block dual sport tires on my 500 scrambler? I live and ride mostly off-road, good gravel, dirt, roads and some sort road trips. Any input appreciated!!!
I've seen videos of someone with full knobbies on a Ducati Panigale, and some dude who took a Yamaha R1 on a round the world trip, getting stuck in mud, sand dunes, and everywhere else that bike shouldn't be.
Hi Ryan; i hope you’re going well; how many km have you done on your Pirelli rear tire before you have needed to change it ? More km on front tire? Thanks & cheers from Montreal. Maybe both are still good. Ive done around 1500 km since i installed them on my CB500X six weeks ago. I love them so far; awesome tires.
I take my stock Honda Rebel 250 off road on gravel roads, I took it up a mountain on a trail road, and ya of course mud is going to bog you down, but like you say just take it easy, I’m only going like 20mph to 35mph on trails and on gravel
I've been looking at the rebel 500 and wondering if it could be outfitted for some adventure riding. Mostly because of the low seat height and foot peg position. And the rubber inserts are removable. Nice to see it on some gravel roads. How's the seat for comfort?
Do you think the Honda rebel can handle more aggressive off roading or lite adventures with lifted/upgraded shocks, skid plate, knobby tires, and higher bars!??
Googled Honda rebel with dirt tires, cause I wanna buy one bike not two....or should I say I can't afford to buy two bikes lol. Gf just picked up a g650gs and I took it out last night....I need offroad capabilities now! Do you think the 1100 will be too much bike to do offroad? Would be fine on gravel is assume eh? Well due to unforeseen circumstances I sold my rebel recently. But at the time of sale the tires had 9500km on them and more than enough tread to pass a safety inspection. Likely another 5000km of life

Hi Ryan, I've been looking into the rebel lately. Have you ever tried to go off road down hill with it? And do you think it could handle a 30 cm drop? Hey Ryan, just wondering whether those tires have good mileage or not. Would you consider purchasing it again or you’re more satisfied with the Dunlop D404? Thanks!
I have near 5000 km on my MT60rs and there is no significant wear. These will be my go to tire for the foreseeable future. On a 400lbs rebel these tires are under loaded compared to the adv bikes they were designed for.
Any motorcycle can go offroad😅 depends what type of OFF Road you have in mind, a quick search on youtube you can see from an R1 or R6 to a honda Goldwimg going off road😂.
So why didn't you just get a dual sport bike if you like riding street, and some dirt? Just curious.. I enjoyed your video though, I never would have thought someone would try riding a Rebel off road like that.
Good question, but to be honest when I got the rebel off-road wasn’t even a consideration. (I had trucks for that) I bought it in mid winter with the intention of commuting and quickly learned that my passion for riding existed on and off-road.
Rebel is actually sprung quite soft. Eats up most of the rough stuff. The suspension could get overwhelmed at times when the bumps lined up to close together though.
