    I test rode both. Honda let me keep the Rebel for 2 days, Kawasaki let me keep the Vulcan for a day.
    I found the Rebel marginally more fun around town, but the Vulcan was by _far_ the superior machine overall.
    I liked the Rebel, but _bought the Vulcan._ Absolutely love it.

    This is hilarious, the Vulcan's suspension is better, torque is better, hp is better, instruments are better... but the 500 "has character".... Something is not jiving with this review. Good video, nice production quality, and I love that you did the review while riding. I just wish your conveyed impressions matched your breakdowns of each bike.

      @@TheGarthinator having rode both the Rebel 500 and the Vulcan S. I personally prefer the Vulcan S. I’m a bit taller (6’0) and the Vulcan S fits me like a glove. The Rebel was more compact and easy to snap around turns and twisties, so if you’re a shorter rider or looking to whip through tight roads then that’s your best bet. The Vulcan is a bit faster and snappy on the throttle, if you’re looking for something to really put some solid mileage on then it’s your better choice. Both are smaller bikes and by that nature easy to handle and whip through turns and twisty roads so keep that in mind.

    in about 1 month honda will release the new honda rebel 500 2020 model with all things people complained about fixed. new led lights on it , suspension fixed , and for begginers a gear indicator, and a way better seat so it will be the perfect bike for me untill i die.enough power to get out of trouble every time. when i see a rebel on the street i smile. that`s happiness for me. can`t wait to buy the new one and customize it in order to be an unique motorcycle! the vulcan s is a nice bike, but i will follow my heart.

    I just spent 2 weeks figuring out which of these 2 bikes to buy, and after riding each one I ended up falling in love with the Vulcan because of its sheer torque that I felt it had over the Rebel, and it's comfort felt better. I also was buying this for an occasional commuter and a weekend trip bike with my girlfriend and the rear seat was way better on the Vulcan! Now if I was only commuting around town, hell yeah the rebel was amazing. So light weight and nimble. But I think the Vulcan will take much more time to grow out of due to its additional features and power. Amazing comparison video though guys, you've earned a sub! :)

      Hi mike, i owned a 2015 vulcan s 650 but i gave it up after over a year. I loved the acceleration. It is a crotch rocket. My biggest gripe was I cannot ride it for more than an hour.. the vibration at speeds when i have to maintain over 4k rpm, the bike’s vibration makes my feet, lower leg, hands and fingers numb especially on long freeway continuous ride. I bought a 2015 Vulcan S (non - ABS) in April of 2018. It was sold new in 2017 and had only 394 miles on it. I hadn't ridden in over 27 years. I rode a 78 Suzuki GS850 back in the early 90's. When the dealer told me about the trade that they had just taken in that was in my price range, I asked what it was and the displacement. He told me it was a 650 Kawasaki Vulcan. I was not impressed over the phone, but I went down and test rode it. The rest is history. I immediately fell in love with how it feels to ride the Vulcan S. It has plenty of power and it's still very light feeling. It's a great looking motorcycle and I'm confident that it will last a long time without issues. It's liquid cooled. I get 48-60 mpg. It's more impressive than I ever imagined possible. I did add mirror extensions to raise the mirrors. I was looking at my shoulders. I haven't ridden a Rebel. It's a nice looking bike too.

      Well as stated I love me the Vulcan S as well as it is a bike that punches high above the CC class and is a blast to ride. But for the needs we have it is fun to have the more narrow and light 500CC. However, I will do a stand alone on this bike as it never has seen the light on this channel yet and we've had it now for almost two years and to also explain in greater detail what this bike has to offer. Enjoy and be safe on your Vulcan you have a great motorcycle. RSMF

And for my wife’s safety I added a sissy bar with a padded back rest. It also has a rack for additional carry options. Great bike and has all the speed and power I need. 0-60 in under 6 seconds. I’m 68 and 5’6” so this bike fits my age and height. I looked at the Vulcan and felt the tank was to wide and it felt top heavy so I went with the rebel and no regrets.

    Thanks for the comparison. I have a 2015 Vulcan S with ABS and I love it. It handles great, has really good acceleration, and is light for a cruiser. My first motorcycle was a 2006 Honda Rebel Chinese copycat and it was good to learn on but as soon as I got comfortable, I wanted more power. My 2nd motorcycle was a 2012 Honda Shadow Phantom and that one looked amazing and had the more power I was looking for at the time. I had a near accident on the highway when the breaks locked up on me in an emergency and I decided to upgrade to a motorcycle with ABS. The Vulcan S is that bike. It has great breaking with ABS and it also has more power and is lighter than the Honda Shadow. All that for roughly the same price. When people ask me for advice on a 1st bike I can’t decide between the new Honda Rebel with ABS and the Kawasaki Vulcan S with ABS. So thank you for your input. Sounds like the lightness of the Rebel makes it a more interesting ride.

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  6 лет назад +5

      Being lighter on its feet and the mid mount controls do help it out for sure. The Vulcan S is not a bad bike at all by any measure at all. It's just when it comes down to the fun to ride and play in town nature of the 500 and its character it does win.

      @Bunnyshooter 223 I think every new car sold in the USA has ABS. It only comes in handy in emergency situations which is when you need it most. If you were an expert race car driver or motorcycle rider then ABS would potentially not be as good at braking as you but I am not an expert and I have my Oh Sh*t moments in cars and motorcycles so I appreciate having ABS and a good set of tires to save my behind. I also tend to ride or drive fairly aggressively at times so the extra safety feature is welcomed by me. Stay safe.

    Vulcan for me. I don’t want a cruiser for urban driving, I just want one that’s competent around town. I get a cruiser for cruising, Open highways, sweeping roads, etc. I want to take it on an an afternoon adventure, not pick up groceries and tampons.
    The rebels ergo is poor for long rides with its hunched forward position, it’s seat quickly becomes uncomfortable , the mid controls start to make the knees ache, and she’s can be a bit gutless at highway speed. She also starts to feel light in the front end at higher speeds, she’s not nearly as comfortable in the freeway as the Vulcan. To me she’s a naked bike in a cruisers clothing. If that’s what you want, fantastic… she does it great, but I bought a cruiser to cruise.

    The Rebel beat the 883 because it actually has a better power to weight ratio. Even against the Vulcan S the power to weight ratio is almost identical between the two. Now the Vulcan (and 883) do have more torque, but the difference felt in the seat shouldn't be all that different. And starting with the 2020 model the Rebel display has been updated with a gear indicator and a couple other things, but still no tachometer. But it's better than it was. The Rebel also has a very nice slipper clutch which the Vulcan does not have. Main advantages for the Vulcan in my opinion are better looks, better stock exhaust and better aftermarket exhaust options, and most importantly just better comfort for longer rides. Now if you consider the $1000+ price difference, you can buy the Rebel and upgrade the seat, exhaust, and make some cosmetic changes to suit your own taste and you eliminate all these disadvantages.

    Great video! I owned a 2014 CB500F which the Rebel 500 shares its engine with and it is a great motor that is usually more than enough for tons of fun. My main gripe was that at speeds around 100 km/h it doesn't get up and go very well for passing. I would wager that the 650 Vulcan would be better for that. That being said, it's perfectly fine to just stay in your lane and enjoy the ride in most cases without passing so not being able to make decisive passes isn't a deal-breaker to everyone. It's nice to see people look past a spec sheet when reviewing a bike.
    My current bike is 556 lbs and sometimes I miss the lightweight CB500F; it just takes a bit more concentration to ride the GSX650F in tight spaces and sharp U-turns than the CB500F did which I sometimes miss.

    I've only owned two street bikes, both cruisers (Honda Shadow Sabre 1100 and Honda VTX1300R) so my experience is limited. I sold the VTX just over a year ago and am really missing being on two wheels. As I'm getting older (51 now) and am not a big guy anyway (5'6" and 170 lbs.,) I find myself wanting a smaller, lighter bike that I can just have more fun on. I know the Rebel will have no power compared to the VTX. It had crazy power and I loved it. I don't see me riding the interstate very often. I would be riding back roads and small highways mostly. I've been trying to decide between the Vulcan S and the Rebel 500 for a while. I think the fun factor and lower weight makes me want to go with the Rebel. Add to that it's basically made for someone my size. I don't need the power of the VTX anymore. I just want to get on two wheels and have fun. Besides, I used to have an absolute blast riding a 150cc scooter. LOL. I think the 2020 Rebel 500 will suit me fine.

    The peg position alone makes a huge difference between the two bikes. I own a Vulcan S and the forward positioning pegs does not give you that confidence like it would with a closer peg position like the rebel. Even when the vulcan S is adjusted to the short positioning. Avoiding bumps and such, the pegs being forward you would have to somewhat also pull on the handlebar to prop yourself up a bit vs just using your legs to prop yourself in the rebel. So for new riders, having that sense of control makes all the difference in your confidence level.

    Many thanks for making this as there’s more and more bikers that have been riding for years and although they have been riding for such a long time they now want a bike that’s not a sport bike but one that importantly is not as heavy as as the 700 +lbs of a traditional cruiser also being well behaved in city driving and is capable of keeping up with motorway traffic for the odd week end away. I would like to see you match either of these bikes against the Royal Enfield

      Is a 500 - 650 really even close to the biggest bike out there? Most people I know that ride are riding far bigger and faster bikes. As a first time rider who can only afford one bike, I definitely want one big enough to handle freeway speeds so I can actually go places or why bother. I can just ride a bicycle if I want to just cruise around town and I can't afford to buy another bike anytime soon, so anything less than 500 doesn't even seem realistic.

    • @poorasslawstudent
      @poorasslawstudent 5 лет назад

      @@frontdeskstaff9359 have you considered the VN 900? My first bike was a shadow 1100 but I liked the VN 900 just as much. I then moved to a vulcan vaquero 1700 which was great for long trips but to be honest, its not that fun especially around town so now I'm back to looking at a smaller funner bike that gives me gas mileage, that fun factor and makes around town and commuting more enjoyable. not looking at the rebel as I still want a bike that can handle the free way and that IMO means a minimum of a 900 v-twin or a 650 sport style engine.

  • @battletoads22

    So, I just got my cycle endorsement and I don't have a bike yet, and I'm looking at both of these bikes, and I am going to test ride them, but as a dude who is 6'5", the Rebel has me concerned with those middle mounted pegs. I've done some tests in my chair here and I've noticed that it's harder to kick my foot up as if I'm upshifting the closer my foot is to my body. It puts a strain in my Achilles' tendon and my instep. The bike I learned on was an HD Street 500 and if I didn't commit to the upshift, I would get a false neutral. One time I even had it in 3rd by mistake (I upshifted twice). So, for my skills test, when it came to the one test where we had to be in 2nd gear, since it wasn't my bike, I just decided to kick the gear up as hard as I could. So, I'm definitely more interested in the Vulcan S for its forward mounted pegs.

    I heard you both, but i have my insights since i am planning to buy one of the two choices... Firsr i have to confirmed for Asean market if the honda, their assembly line is in China, if it is there... Scratch.. 2nd, i have to see for myself phisically the difference, then on the vulcan s, i have to look for replacement parts for longevity and the availability of parts, in my city honda if it is a celphone, it is a user friendly, many parts available.. But on the big bike category, they are even... There is also if the ground clearance is low, philippines has lots of lots of humps and bad roads.. So i go for much higher ground clearance.. We filipinos love those japanese brand makers... Like i said, your advice is well i think helps a lot.. Thanks...
    Lastly, VULCAN S. Is a named taken for vulcano i think, meaning hot, as a fire fighter in my city, Vulcan is our radio call sign. Thats one thing maybe i go for the Vulcan S.... Lol.

    For most people watching this video, let me warn you, these guys are not the norm. Most riders get board with their small bike very fast & end up wanting something larger. Selling & buying bikes often comes at a loss. 1. never buy new, buy used. 2. buy as big a bike as you are comfortable with & realize your comfort will increase with just a few days. Don't get me wrong, it will take years to become a good rider but that 900 to 1200cc bike that seems scary at first wont after just a few days. Just look for something cheap at first as you are going to drop it. Your first bike is a learning tool, don't get something expensive & pretty. Save that cool factor after you have ridden for a year.

The yamaha bolt is an absolute snooze fest. I'd been waiting years to ride the bolt, I thought for sure it was the bike for me... but no way, it reminded me of my 2008 suzuki s50 boulevard. Too slow. The Vulcan S performance wise is the number 1 for sure. Also if your style is a bit more speed seeking and such it would indeed win. Thanks for your video; I appreciate the confusion. I don't think the age of this video would change my question and I'm shopping between these two right now. One of you mentioned that the Rebel was "easier to insure" than the Vulcan. Now, had he said "cheaper", I would have understood that, so I was hoping you might clarify what "easier" means?
    While I'm at it, I am not a completely new rider, but one who hasn't in a very long time and I thought I might choose a Rebel because of it's size and weight (color choices are better too). I'm 5, 11 & 150#, but also a gym rat, so bike weight isn't an issue, but size is. The Rebel 900 is too big for me and would be wasted. Whatever model I get, I don't want to replace it - ever. I'm thinking I might be more satisfied with the Vulcan in my case, even though just crossing town would be what I would mainly do with it. I don't want to get a Rebel and then think I should have gotten the larger engine on the Vulcan.
    In my town (Lakeland) we use the interstate (I-4) frequently, but if only 2 or 3 exits. Then there's the occasional trip to Orlando on one side, Tampa on the other by about 45 minutes, once or twice a year. Okay, maybe bike week in Daytona too. I must be comfortable going 80, so I won't get run over. But other than that, I'm not going canyon riding or racing. I have no "need for speed", other than what is necessary to keep up with traffic without taxing the engine. I'm not sure if a Rebel and a featherweight rider might get blown off the road.
    I'm a very fit 64 and I want a bike to keep, not to trade later. As a for instance, my car is 6 years old, paid for, looks new (I'm an auto detailer) and I have no intention of replacing it; that was my intent when I bought it too. I don't want perpetual car payments or motorcycle payments either. For this type of purchase, I make an informed decision, love what I buy and keep it forever. I wanted the Rebel first, then I think I decided on the Vulcan, but then the Rebel keeps popping up again. I am enjoying my frustration and indecision, but all good things must come to an end. I'll let you know what that end, ends up being.

    The Rebel 500 you will most likely be looking to upgrade soon. The Vulcan S you will find you don't even need to upgrade. The Vulcan S pisses all over other bikes in that range.

      I would not say that. Depends on why you are riding. Just getting out an enjoying the views you will not care about power or speed. Blazing into corners and wanting the performance yes.

    Honda just makes more comfortable/refined riding bikes. Kawasaki have always leaned toward performance. I have a Kawasaki C14 and a Honda VFR800. It is funny how the Honda has half the displacement, lighter, less wind protection and not as much touring weight capacity. But the VFR800 by far is a more fun/comfortable touring bike than the Kawasaki C14 overall. Does not mean I do not like both bikes. But it would seem that this video is an example of the difference in focus between how Honda and Kawasaki approaches their designs.

    So here's the thing. I've not seen any used rebel 500's for cheap. I've not even seen 250's in decent condition for cheap. I can only afford one bike and one to keep. I can't afford the extra cost to upgrade a year later. So which one do I get between the two? The rebel seems easier to handle around town but I live in Southern California. If I bother to ride, I'll be doing regular 10-20 min freeway sprints, which means running 70mph at least. Everyone I personally know who owns a rebel has said it shakes like crazy at that speed and they've wanted to upgrade within 6 months or so. I don't know anyone personally who owns the vulcan s. Does it handle well enough at 70 or so on the freeway? If so, then I can imaging being happy to keep it long term.

      To me neither of them have any shakes to them. The Vulcan S does have more power and can hold higher speeds easier though and the stock seating and suspension is better. Making it a longer term choice.

      @@RabidHedgehog Thanks for the reply. Probably going with the vulcan for those reasons, but I have been looking at the vstrom 650 recently. Too many video's of people doing cool trips on the adventure bikes.

      I did the Vstrom 650 and I love that machine.... Not so much the bigger 1K but the 650 is wonderful.

    It is worth mentioning that Vulcan S has a parallel-twin engine instead of a V-twin design, and therefore, it has very different control riding characteristics. When I go to very light throttle, it gets a slight vibration/shudder. Not really lugging motor and it will accelerate fine. The Vulcan S simply doesn’t like “light throttle “. It likes to be wound out and shifted around 5000 rpm. I wanted to shift at 2000 rpm and ride at 2500 to 3000 rpm and Vulcan S engine doesn’t like that (shudder and vibrate). I now shift at 4500 to 5000 rpm and cruise around 5000 rpm. It just takes some getting used to (for those who used to ride a V-twin bike).

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  4 года назад

      Although I am aware of the characteristic as that engine is passed around Kawasaki from sport bike to adv to cruiser to naked, I tended to rev the machine out myself and the engine was more than willing to commit that to speed. For the purpose of this review an comparison we did have two PTwins with one more attuned to being able to commit to low end riding to aid new riders, and one that was to be a more experienced riders machine in the Vulcan S. So that is why the Rebel won this, as a friendlier new rider machine in cost, value for dollar, and overall ease of maintenance and such.

    What year is your Vulcan S? My Rebel frustrates me because I would I’ve a tach or gear indicator. And I love the color of the Vulcan S.

    Why is the gas tank on the Vulcan S so much wider compared to the Rebel when the fuel capacity is only about a 1/2 gallon more?

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  5 лет назад +1

      Height. The Rebel's tank is much taller than the Vulcan S. So it helps make up for the lack of width.

    Have you ridden the 500x? If you have, would you rather commute from Moore to Edmond on a Rebel or a 500x? Thanks
