Stuart Martin, who has played William Wellington for the past four seasons, will not be returning as the Duke for a fifth season. We need a spin off, "The Duke," or just "Duke," based on his experiences with the New York police in the 1880's. I'd watch it.
The Duke added so much to. This series. Without him is a great loss. I won’t be watching.
Heartbroken, but happy to see more projects for Stuart. And I’m curious to see what happens to Eliza without the Duke.
I liked watching the episodes with the chemistry between the Duke and Scarlet. When the Duke was missing from the episode it wasn’t the same. Good luck Mr Martin on your future projects.
I really have enjoyed the show, but without the Duke I don’t think I’ll watch anymore. He really makes the show. I like the rest of the cast and Liza is great but he is the show. So sorry he’s leaving I could have watched it forever 😔😔

I don't know why tjis happens in masterpiece too often. First it was in Sanditon where they separated Charlotte and Sydney in season one. Just heartbreaking
Then they killed him in season two and again things didn't work for Charlotte and Xander in that season.
Now it's William, he was one of the most lovable heros, we miss him and things cannot be the same.
Is there really no scénario in which a strong man and woman can be together and love each other?
Enjoyed this series. I think the chemistry between Eliza and the Duke was a big part of the show and I don’t see that happening between any of the other characters. I also really missed Moses this season m
thank you for a 5th season, i love this show! sad to hear the duke is leaving but it's understandable, people get new jobs and life moves on. i always thought he'd make a cool new james bond so hopefully we'll see him on the screen again soon.
The first Bond was Scottish too!
I will no longer be watching. Thought William would come back next season. Possibly Eliza and him would’ve been detectives together 😔

Would be interesting to see a series, or even a movie, about the Duke on secondment in NYC.
This show went from a guilty pleasure to being outright on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode.
I don’t watch it anymore. Not the same without the Duke.

For them to be together, one of them would have to change what they wanted, and Eluza isn't ready to do that - if she ever will be? She is driven. I only wish they hadn't given us so much of their earlier background - it only makes it harder to see them end.
Yes, the chemistry between Eliza and William was why I watched and now that is gone. Sorry, but I will no longer be watching.

What a great guy. Always thinking ahead but with consideration for the rest of the company/family, Mr. Martin is like an intrepid explorer, confident about his aspirations, hard core loyalty to his team of fellow explorers and yet aware of the unknown and willing to face the unknown learning about his own strengths and weaknesses for his next exploration, and the next one, et al..
No Duke, no watch!!! They are a team. They were sold to us as a team, they should remain a team. Great chemistry , great comebacks, intelligent, great comraderie , both very smart with very different skills. I think this exit of our Duke has come from a male top official of this tv series orders. Only a man would feel the gumption to break these two characters apart. Someone clueless, insensitive, unenlightened idiot, pinching pennies, not wanting to pay for two equally gifted actors. Worst treatment to a fan base every. You'll soon find out if any fan base left. This is just abuse apon the fans.
And why the heck are there only 6 episodes in a season 😤 there should be 10 at minimum , same for creatures series.

Stuart is the Duke. He is part of the show. I'm very sad and don't watch the show and longer.
In season 3 William's character was seriously damaged in an apparent attempt to tamp down his popularity which didn't comport with the writers' vision and the role was marginalized in both seasons 3 and 4. The writing was on the wall. As the saying goes, "revenge is a dish best served cold."

I'm just hoping that he randomly turns up at the end of the last episode of season 5 (which I'm guessing will be the last???) and they get a happy ending. I'd obviously be annoyed that we missed out on so much but it's better than nothing. If they end up making Eliza and the new guy or Nash getting together I'll be so annoyed, it would just feel like all of that slow-burn with Duke was for nothing. I think I'd rather Eliza end up with no one, I mean don't get me wrong I love Nash and Eliza's dynamic but ahhhh Eliza and the Duke deserve to be endgame!!! this is literally my fave show ever idky but I just love it so much!!!

Have to say, after the loss of the Duke in Bridgerton, I would ask that we recast the Duke.
Funny how I was just thinking the same the other day, seeing that Funko has done the pops for Bridgerton, I still miss that Duke Simon (& Daphne) BTW as I surely will with this 1, too bad it had to end like this.
Good luck to to Stuart for what shall come for him, and no matter what, the show will change big time from now on without him, it won't be the same...I hope they know what they're doing, since Wiliza were at the core of the story since the start, therefore it won't be a walk in the park to move on with the storyline, time will tell...😭🎩👒🔍🩵🙏
I do not think any other actor can replace Stuart Martin in this role. Kate and Stuart had too much chemistry and that was carried over to the two characters they played.
@@lindawalker2451 Absolutely! Even if let's say another actor would play the Duke, it still couldn't be the same...because actors one way or another make a story "their own", and it becomes unique.
As I've written before, whatever they wanna do now, the show is forever changed...which bring in another question: are they really so sure about how to alter this story?! What might be so powerful "to justify" such gigantic shift (that is already affecting the audience BTW)?? I guess we'll see soon somehow as news, I don't think that they're gonna leave us hanging this way for years ah...👀🗣️🙀
William leaving is a tragedy. I will still watch the show, but will miss the chemistry between William and Eliza.
Remember his last words “this is goodbye for now” so maybe he’ll come back. Needless to say…I will continue to watch!
Hope the writers can think of new plots to bring The Duke back into the story!

Ugh!!! I wasted 4 seasons on this show!! Gag. I hate it when they take main characters out. They talk about these characters like they are real. This is a TV show and they are supposed to entertain the viewer. We viewers really wanted to see this couple progress. Good gravy. The Eliza character is too harsh without the Duke. Oh well. On to another show.
Don't think "they" took him out. He got offered a better role for his career, so he took it.
@@AnneHeising-wj5mb Doesn't sound like that's the reason. He doesn't have any new projects lined up either. It probably came down to creative differences as the writers envisioned a different future for the show where the titular characters wouldn't have gotten together (soon or at all) and put his character on the sideline. I don't blame him for leaving, the way the writers go about this is really weird.

I think both Rachel and Kate wanted Stuart off the show. They knew that he was more popular than Eliza and wanted her to be an independent feminist woman who didn't need a man. In their interviews, they both talked about Nash and the amazing chemistry he had with Eliza. I think they wanted him to be her platonic friend and eliminate any romance in the show. She alone would be the Star.

I would’ve been okay with that if they had always presented their relationship in a platonic way, but I feel like I’ve been duped.

I don't think the show will work with Eliza only. She is not a charismatic character while the Duke as given life by Stuart Martin was fascinating to watch and to hear. I agree that Stuart was the star and perhaps that rankled with Kate and with Rachel. I won't watch the new season unless there is a hint that the Duke will return.
I too will miss William and the byplay he had with Eliza. I wish Stuart Martin all rhe best. But Arabella was right...Eliza is stubborn in her goal as a detective. I sure hope Rachel New and Ben make her grow more as a person and soften her hard edges. Otherwise, she will be a stale, one dimensional character. Will we ever learn how she felt about William? Guess not.
This is some conspiracy theory stuff. The actor wanted to leave. It happens.
Scarlet and the Duke got high ratings on rotten tomatoes. Rebel Moon got a splat on rotten tomatoes, very low rating. I really hope he achieves what he wants but there's always Hallmark and period films and masterpiece which is where, I believe, he his fan base would like to see him.
Stuart did many things - not on Hallmark, nor PBS - before MSATD, and I'm sure he'll continue to do so. I wish him well; he deserves better than what happened to him on MSATD.
I'm sure Eliza will have a good inspector to match her with. She is going strong and look forward to the.next season.
