I stumbled upon this movie last night and let me be the first one to say that it was an amazing film. I am American/ Island and I always forget that our Caribbean peoples struggled just as much as Black Americans. The Rebellion of 1861 sparked a train reaction that reached all the way to Virginia and sparked Nat Turner to start his rebellion.
Stories of slavery like this open our eyes to how brutal, heartbreaking and destructive bondage can be. The choices African men & women were forced to make to survive. Thank you Ms. Andre Levy.
Bro I just cried at the scene /spoiler/ when nimrod died. I kept asking how many times has this happened so many times. The generational trauma and sadness that produced our rhythm and blues in the americas yet no whip could break our soul. How much was love snatched from them? How much was freedom evaded from them?
I don’t think “Ms. July” at that time knew love at all; favored maybe. Remember she is in a house slaves position. The reality was she was still not free. Living day by day in survival mode.

African (descendants) are the Blacks,
Caribbeans, Haitians etc. If a apple gets put in a basket of peaches it is still a apple!!!
