Man, that Memphis Grizz team in 2012-13 was so underrated, Z-Bo and Marc Gasol were having a great season and they were both all stars i believe that year, Gasol had a great year and he won DYOP that year also
It's a real shame Memphis just isn't a popular free agent destination. They had a solid team for a while in a Western Conference that was incredibly tough. Just one All Star/Superstar level player could've pushed them over the edge and made them real contenders
Noah, Hibbert, Gasol, Duncan, Dwight, Ibaka (pretty much played Perkin's role), Bogut, DJ, Horford, Tyson Chandler, Asik, Lopez twins. These guys made it fearful for anyone to drive in and were mobile enough to bother mid-range shots consistently, very reminiscent of 90's defense. This mini era of respectable big men in the paint 09' - 13' may primarily be the indirect cause to the quick transition and evolution of the fast ball movement, run and gun 3pt playstyle we see today which both championship Spurs and GSW were the first to perfectly execute and master, which is now being emulated by almost every single team this era.
@@DelightFools lay off the drugs guy. None of those guys were as good as you made them seem. The two best Centers at the time were an injured Howard and Bynum and no one was even close. The 2013 season just showed a lack of good centers overall with the best power forwards being Blake Griffin and Kevin Love. The best players were mainly point guards in 2013. The center position was so dead.
Guys don't understand until this season we had consistently been in the playoffs and have always been one star or all around wing away from real chip contention .
Rudy Gay became a beast when he got to Sacramento. Shooting efficiency and defense got a whole lot better. That version of Gay could've got Memphis to the finals
Too bad the rest of that Sacramento team was ass so he pretty much put up meaningless stats. He wouldn't have gotten traded if he got his efficiency up sooner, though now that I think of it, he probably still would've been traded anyway because his playstyle wasn't a good fit for the team anymore.

I mean there weren't many good small forwards anyway that year. Almost all good sf were on huge contracts and some are still developing like kawhi and pg13. That was the best season by record, but that wasn’t their best season in terms of chances of winning. The season where they were up 2-1 against Warriors before Conley and Allen got injured was their best chances.
This I completely agree with. If they stayed healthy and beat the warriors, they would've probably gone on to win the NBA finals. That was their best opportunity to win the NBA finals.
The biggest problem for the Grizzlies was a combination of not having the guards needed to stand up to the elite ones in the league, and their depth being okay, but nothing great. Still, they did have a strong frontcourt with Marc Gasol and Randolph in the paint.
3:54 anyone else catch that he called Darrell Arthur "one of their main wing defenders?" he was a slow footed offensive minded power foward. lol sorry Andy you're trippin on this one (were you thinking of Quincy Pondexter?)
Lol I was gonna say. Darell was like Boozer as QP was to Deng. That year 3 and D guys were godly. Danny Green (except when he purposely threw the finals so his buddy Lebron could win), Miller, Quincy, Deng, PG (overall best), Shumpert, Terence Ross (when he makes his first shot 😅)
a version 2.0 of this team is 2012-2014 indiana pacers. no super stars, just a whole bunch of 80+ players, being the only competing team against big-3 miami heat in East conference. And almost succeed in ECF for 2 times.
The current Grizz Team(21-22) is contending for that spot Ja (27.4PPG) only age 22 is special and potentially could be all time great and Bane(18.6PPG) has really shined in his sophomore season along with good complimentary players like triple j(16.3PPG) and Dillon Brooks(14.7 PPG) they have a real good chance this season

The pace they played in 2013 was the slowest, but you compare that pace to the one 90s teams played and the 2013 Grizzlies would have one of the fastest paces if they played in the 90s. I loved that team and at the time when they were assembled we really looked like a championship caliber team if only things broke the right way for us. They never did however it was great to see the window open for a while and hope we could get in before it closed. Mike Conley Jr is now my favorite basketball player of all time over Iverson just because of this run. It should've been Rudy Gay, but too bad he couldn't hit that ceiling.

Daiton they also can't rebuild. Bad trades, worst contracts, many of them.
