- A music hall performer manages the saloon her father bought. The clientèle includes unemployed shipyard workers who she entertains and helps. Made shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, it was Fields' last British film. The film is notable for the song "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye" which became a major hit.
Sally, a down on her luck actress takes over a pub near the John Brown & Company shipyard at Clydebank after a shady deal by her errant father. When the closure of the yard threatens her clientèle she leads the workers to London to lobby the government. After getting nowhere Sally pretends to be someone else to get to meet the great and the good, and of course saves the day, though losing the love of her heart. Again.
Gracie Fields - Sally Fitzgerald
Sydney Howard - Major Fitzgerald
Morton Selten - Lord Alfred Randall
Norma Varden - Lady Patricia Randall
Oliver Wakefield - Forsyth
Tucker McGuire - Linda Marsh
MacDonald Parke - Diggs
Richard Cooper - Sir John Treacher
Songs: Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye - Grandfather’s Bagpipes.
One of the most charming and easily enjoyable B musicals I have seen, "Shipyard Sally" may not have memorable songs or big dance numbers, but it slowly bowled me over with its playful whimsicality and quirky allure of its innocent cast.
Gracie Fields is superb as the title heroine - the earthy, vivacious saloon singer determined to fight for the reopening of the shipyard where her customers work. The saloon, located in Clydebank, is owned by her father Major Fitzgerald (a marvelously droll Sydney Howard), who is also her partner. Sally travels to London, with a petition of thousands of unemployed workers, to meet Lord Randall (Morton Selten), the head of the Shipyard business. As she leaves Clydebank, she sings "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye". Since she can't meet him right away, Sally first impersonates as a man and then assumes the identity of another singer Linda Marsh (Tucker Maguire) to meet Randall at a private ball where Sally sings and dances before a group of aristocratic guests.
I saw "Shipyard Sally" one late night on TV by accident and I loved it. I never heard of it before but it quickly became one of my favorite musicals. - Кино
I have just discovered Gracie & I am so glad I did. She is wonderful TY for sharing
I loved it. Every single minute of it. What a lovely film. A treasure. Thankful to have it for future film buffs & Industrial tycoons.

THANKS A MILLION UPLOADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this so much! Thank you for posting.
How could anyone fail to be moved by the beginning of this great film made by Twentieth Century Fox UK. War time spirit? Here it is in all it's glory!
Awww, that was such a touching rendition of Danny Boy @41:00. Gracie was the best!
I thoroughly enjoyed it, regardless!
Great film from the start of the War. The Wish Me Luck song became a wartime song for servicemen (and women) leaving for the front. Sung by the great Gracie Fields.
Thank you for a heartwarming human comedy. Fields was a remarkable talent!
Surely do love Gracie! Wish there were lots more of her movies out there....so thanks a million for posting this one, it is new to me...loved it!!! 🥰👍🏻❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I agree totally!
@spirerich1917
Gracie Fields..., what a gem of a woman!
Thank you very much for sharing :)))
Gracie veers alarmingly between Scots and Lancashire ... her film Dad is channeling WC Fields ... but her charisma shines through ...
Gosh opening scene makes me so sad as we have lost our shipbuilding yards devastating communities.
To the people griping about the quality, There's an old saying: "You've got to make do with what you've got."
They could try claiming a refund.
Why complain when it’s free and it’s very rare to see this movie
right "Make due, use it up, wear it out"
In just six short years, in 1945 "Molly and Me" starring Gracie Fields with superb film quality both sharp and clear.

Excellent film! I adore Gracie Fields. She was one of tha best actresses of all time, in my humble opinion. I've not seen her in a film that wasn't completely enjoyable. I loved this storyline and all actors were great. Thanks for posting! 🌈🌈🌈
Thank you for posting this musical but it deserves much better video quality than 144p.
Agreed
Great singer and greater movie! Thank you ❤️🎶🙏

It's so great to see Gracie Fields in action despite the poor quality

A FANTASTIC VOICE...WOW...HER VIBRATO WAS SO REFRESHING...TY...LOVELY FILM!!!
And her high notes sung with a strong voice, too! Wow!
I love her records and her films
Can you get her other two films please? “Molly and Me” and “Holy Matrimony” . Gracie Fields real personality shines through.
Elaine, they're both here on RUclips. And good quality too. Holy Matrimony on Chris Rogers channel. Molly and Me on The Film Detective channel. I watched both recently and thoroughly enjoyed them!
Both excellent films
Thank You Tube for having a platform to view these film's . If I didn't see then I don't know what I would do.
Filmed before the declaration of War and released after. I wonder if "Land of Hope and Glory" at the end was shot at the 11th hour to make the film timely?
I watched a short clip at 480p that was watchable- this needs help. 144P???
Aye, Gracie,
Great movie
I would not call "Annie Laurie"', "Danny Boy" or "Land of Hope and Glory" unmemorable songs.
Our Gracie 😊
Thank you for uploading this! I have been searching for it for years. Thoroughly enjoying it.
Show this film to Mrs MAY EGLAND fights on BREXIT thanks agood film
There's always one who will bring Brexit into absolutely bloody everything. Is there a single place on the internet you people haven't slithered into? Hope you enjoy us being the first country in history to impose sanctions on ourselves.
Agree with other reviewer. Would love to watch, but video quality extremely poor. Too bad
Ww2 make us uk feel great
WW2 landed the country with a huge debt: the U.S. screwed this country to get its money back quick while they bankrolled Germany instead: most of the Nazis got out of jail by the mid-'50s and hundreds of thousands of killers just got "amnestied" (the second-in-command of the SS until 1942, Karl Wolff, even ended up on a British tv war programme in the '70s); the German industrialists and bankers kept their assets and their war-profits made from the sweat of thousands of worked-to-death slave-labourers. The Japanese regime also got away with it, apart from a few hangings.
Gracie Fields entertained the British troops throughout WWII and worked nonstop to perform for her country. She uplifted the spirits of the troops and delayed making movies until after the war ended. Gracie was offered the opportunity to sing opera at the Grande Opera House, but she chose to sing songs which were familiar to her and boy could she hit those high notes!
And an 'amen' to that (we need to bring this upbeat, can-do spirit of cooperation back to the West).
SHAME IT IS SO FUZZY ............
These movies really picked you up when life was so down . Love them❣️
Awwww...yeaah.
Gracie...never faaail...to 'pick us up'.¡¿¡♡♡😁😆😉😊🥰
The music over the launching of Queen Mary was Crown Imperial, William Walton's Coronation March for King George VI
17m 20 for Wish me luck
too blurry
Scenes were cut out. Not complete. Shame, should not happen to dear Gracie.
Another Gracie gem:)
whats the name of the song at the end?
Land of Hope and Glory. In Britain often considered the alternative national anthem.
In America, we call that tune Pomp and Circumstance.
Ugh, the poor quality 😭

Thank-You for this!!
