  • A music hall performer manages the saloon her father bought. The clientèle includes unemployed shipyard workers who she entertains and helps. Made shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, it was Fields' last British film. The film is notable for the song "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye" which became a major hit.
Sally, a down on her luck actress takes over a pub near the John Brown & Company shipyard at Clydebank after a shady deal by her errant father. When the closure of the yard threatens her clientèle she leads the workers to London to lobby the government. After getting nowhere Sally pretends to be someone else to get to meet the great and the good, and of course saves the day, though losing the love of her heart. Again.
    Gracie Fields - Sally Fitzgerald
    Sydney Howard - Major Fitzgerald
Morton Selten - Lord Alfred Randall
Norma Varden - Lady Patricia Randall
    Oliver Wakefield - Forsyth
    Tucker McGuire - Linda Marsh
    MacDonald Parke - Diggs
Richard Cooper - Sir John Treacher
Songs: Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye - Grandfather’s Bagpipes.
One of the most charming and easily enjoyable B musicals I have seen, "Shipyard Sally" may not have memorable songs or big dance numbers, but it slowly bowled me over with its playful whimsicality and quirky allure of its innocent cast.
Gracie Fields is superb as the title heroine - the earthy, vivacious saloon singer determined to fight for the reopening of the shipyard where her customers work. The saloon, located in Clydebank, is owned by her father Major Fitzgerald (a marvelously droll Sydney Howard), who is also her partner. Sally travels to London, with a petition of thousands of unemployed workers, to meet Lord Randall (Morton Selten), the head of the Shipyard business. As she leaves Clydebank, she sings "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye". Since she can't meet him right away, Sally first impersonates as a man and then assumes the identity of another singer Linda Marsh (Tucker Maguire) to meet Randall at a private ball where Sally sings and dances before a group of aristocratic guests.
I saw "Shipyard Sally" one late night on TV by accident and I loved it. I never heard of it before but it quickly became one of my favorite musicals.

Great film from the start of the War. The Wish Me Luck song became a wartime song for servicemen (and women) leaving for the front. Sung by the great Gracie Fields.

WW2 landed the country with a huge debt: the U.S. screwed this country to get its money back quick while they bankrolled Germany instead: most of the Nazis got out of jail by the mid-'50s and hundreds of thousands of killers just got "amnestied" (the second-in-command of the SS until 1942, Karl Wolff, even ended up on a British tv war programme in the '70s); the German industrialists and bankers kept their assets and their war-profits made from the sweat of thousands of worked-to-death slave-labourers. The Japanese regime also got away with it, apart from a few hangings.

Gracie Fields entertained the British troops throughout WWII and worked nonstop to perform for her country. She uplifted the spirits of the troops and delayed making movies until after the war ended. Gracie was offered the opportunity to sing opera at the Grande Opera House, but she chose to sing songs which were familiar to her and boy could she hit those high notes!
