And a production code that would be called politically correct government censorship today. I can’t imagine a single actor of note in this film advocating that only films like this should be made to the exclusion of the films we have today with far more realistic storytelling and portrayals of life as it is actually lived then or now.
🙄 There are excellent films and television programs being produced today, especially in television. I love these older films, grew up on them on television, but I so tire of people saying it was so much better than now. There was a helluva lot trash then too, and whatever its pleasures, it isn’t as though this film is a pinnacle of the craft. Maybe you need to be more discreet in what you choose to watch.

What a Wonderful Film. Thank you for sharing "The Way We. We're Before" let's Rescue our way se were before.Blessings from Mexico. November the 19th, 2022
Wonderful Gracie Fields.Yet another British Treasure!!!! I'm an american who discovered her late. I'm so grateful that some of her work is preserved for me to explore. What a JOY!
Such an intelligent film. Gracie was a great actress. I never thought I’d be saying this but, It’s a shame they don’t make them like this anymore. But of course, it does depend on what the audience understands.
I don't know how I missed seeing this before now (2022)? This was really good! Recognized a very young Roddy McDowall instantly. The more I heard her voice I finally recognized "Mrs. Howell" from Gilligan's Island. LOL! This was really good and not to over the top with slap-stick or gratuitous comedy. I really enjoyed the sting at the end. I was holding my breathe thinking Mrs. Graham was going to come back to the room and bust them. That's what contemporary movie/TV plots and writers would have done - just to add unnecessary drama and drag things out. I could see this being a TV show. Then again, today's writers, producers and networks would muck it up with violence, profanity, sex and g issues. Better to leave a classic well enough alone. Thanx for posting this!!!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful treasure! I loved every minute of it and was hoping that it would go on forever. ❤❤❤ The housekeeper was a delight, and the rest of the characters were perfect. Thank you so much for putting up this video!
Gracie Fields and Monty Wooley were a wonderful double act, they made a few terrific films like this together- madcap and whimsical, with Gracie's beautiful singing always " in the mix!"
Gracie Fields was great - so versatile. I loved her in Madame Pimpernel that was also made in1945 where she played second to Constance Bennett as a timid sidekick.
Ok, "3 mos. ago!!" This is my first time seeing this!!! & I saw correctly.... Who's the boy??? Roddy McDowell? (I'm watching this on my phone/ not tv!!!!!
A wonderful movie! I'd always heard about Gracie Fields - she was quite famous in England - but I never realized how talented she was. Such a pleasing actress. Thank you for posting this very entertaining movie.
Absolutely delightful. When Grace and Monty sang that song in the last scene the words came flooding back. I remember singing that song as a child...and that was over 60 years ago. Thank you gf1001. You have made an old man very happy tonight. 😀😀😀
“That’s no good, they’ll think I worked in a haunted house”, I can’t get enough of that scene. Great example of mateship and looking out for your friends. In simpler years of course…… Love the film, thank you for uploading.
Simpler years? Really? Do you know what the world was like and had just gone through when this was released in 1945? Millions slaughtered, most of them innocent civilians. And that is considering “just” the war. The only thing simpler about 1945 is the figment of that world that you’ve conjured in your own mind.
Great movie!! Love the classics... Someone should take on the task of remastering these movies before they disappear!! I could hardly make out the faces of these memorable actors!!
I watched a film with her in it yesterday. It was magnificent. She played an American and with the help of her British friend they allowed British airman to escape. I can’t remember what it was called. So I’m hooked and now watching this film. I haven’t watched tv in over a year and don’t miss it. These amazing, wonderful films are such a pleasure to watch with brilliant acting and an actual storyline, instead of sex, drugs, cgi, or violence. can't believe wooly is an American. I could've sworn he was British. well glad I recently discovered Gracie and wooly. amazing picture. I can tell I would watch it again. thank you
Great tour de force performance by Natalie Schafer. Imagine a career that spanned acting opposite both Monte Woolley and Bob Denver. And Monte Woolley never disappoints. He would be great even reading the phone book.
What a wonderful surprise of a movie then what I was expecting it to be about!! I haven’t seen such a fun whimsical movie in a very long time and I’m delighted to have seen this one today!! Thank you for making it available. Years ago, many years ago, I watched black-and-white movies with my parents in the evening or on the weekends and this was the type of movie that we would watch. It was a wonderful time in my life and I thank you for making this available to me again long after they have passed. I would love to see more like this again. God bless you😊♥️♥️
Enjoyed my first exposure to Gracie Fields. Monty Woolley markedly improves any movie he’s in. Reginald Gardiner is also tops. Great fun; many thanks for posting.

Wow this movie was so much fun. I thought it was a movie with W.C. Fields. but instead found this and I am not disappointed either. It had so many levels of interesting ideas and I enjoyed every second of it. As well I can say that I found a new to me actress in Gracie Field that I think is fun and very talented. Thank you Gf 1001.
Thank you so much for this film. I had a smile on my face the whole time and loved the singing. The lovely Roddy (I always was a fan, but have never seen him this young) Gracie, I never saw her this young either. Best 76 minutes today!
I smiled the whole movie through as well. He played so many movies as a boy. One of my favs is "Lassie Come Home" with a very young "Elizabeth Taylor"!....(in 1943). It's a good movie. He always looked younger than he was to me. Probably helped his career as a child actor for sure. Be well.
Great acting. Great plot. Why can't they make movies like this today? Love Monty Wooley.
