Just checking in at 7:30 PM pacific time. Looked at Amtraks web site and this train #5 is currently expected in Salt Lake at 1:45am. 2 hrs & 30 min late. So far they are not making up time. But a treat for the passengers (I at least LIKE Nevada in daylight.)

Good afternoon Mike from 39 sunny mid Tenn. Got to enjoy this weather while we can right? Lots of trains departing from Chicago are late+. City of New Orleans #59 was 4 hours+ leaving I think. Either equipment late arriving from other #' s or just slow turn around. ,& prep for next train kinda slow. Your afternoon nap has been delayed also.

Sadly, we have to tolerate the backup alarms on the equipment as they were at full tilt working at the steel fabrication shop just across the tracks when the Zephyr is that late. Happy Friday, Mike. We've broken out of freezing temps (45°) and the "sleeted snow " is now off the cars. Of course the driveways are treacherous with packed down ice. May be by Sunday it will be normal. Good video - one gets a sense of the "majesty" of the Zephyr with the double stop. Stay safe, be careful and do keep yourself warm.

The "high ball" is a throwback to the very early days of railroading when a red colored sphere was raised to the top of a tall structure alongside the tracks denoting all was clear and proceed at track speed or the train was clear to depart a station and proceed at track speed. There is much more to the term but in this instance, the conductor is telling the engineer that the station work is done, and it is safe to move the train toward the next stop.
