    OH MAN ALIVE! I have told this to sooooo many people over the years. "Don't look down, there is nothing important down there...look down the line when you take off" It's also way less intimidating as the shoulder is mellow and if you are looking down, all you see is steepness leading to the pit of doom!

    Great clip buddy. You could also add to the KS wave at pipe that there is no doubt that he has done the homework on that particular wave prior to pulling the trigger, by which i mean he knows it's gonna be a good wave worth catching, so then the only thing that matters IS the drop , the rest comes after.

    Afer years and years of surfing i still have to struggle ( sometimes) with my front foot placement because it seems like i have lack of space between the board and the body and the leg just doesn`t go to where it should and the feet gets misplaced and with a lot of wax on the nail of my big toe.

      Me too, but I’ve found that staggering my hands when popping up rotating my hips before my legs come up helps a lot. More breakdown on this problem would be appreciated, Chris.

    Watching slow mo of Pro's popping up, the board is pretty much directed down the line, so a lot look down the line of the board then once their feet are planted they look more directly at the line they are going to take..Reason is, if you align board with pretty much the line you are surfing, look down that line will plant your feet centrally on the board..You have peripheral vision, so as long as the board is directed roughly on the line you are taking that's the way..Watch "How the World's Best Surfers Pop Up (Slow Motion)" Tell me I'm wrong, many look down the stringer line to plant feet, if you look or turn your head too much your feet will follow and land off centre...

    Hi Cris. Love your videos. Any thoughts on breath control during the pop up? Do you consciously think about it? eg. Exhaling rather than inhaling as you bring the legs through? Thanks!

    Cris, I have a specific request that I am 100% sure would benefit _many_ of your viewers, including me. Could you do a dedicated video to working on one problem -- or probably more accurately, one symptom -- an inability to bring the front knee close to the chest when popping up. When I look at JJ, Kelly, et.al., their knee almost touches their chest! HOW?? Not being able to do that often means that my front foot doesn't land close to between my hands, but a bit farther back, which means my standing weight is off and that throws off my takeoffs/drops. It's not a problem on a longer board where I can push off my toes; it's only a problem on a short board where I can't push off my toes. (Adding to the problem is the loss of mobility from wearing a 5.5/4mm suit and thick booties.) I would be most grateful. Thanks, brother!

      Let me add: I try to work on hip flexor strength. And I do push-ups where I add bringing my foot (alternating) as close to between my hands as possible and hold it there for core strength. So ... I am good at "push-ups+" with their extra scapular movement. But still, I'm still not getting my knee close to my chest.

    How does that movement towards the shoulder transition into your first bottom turn? Will the steepness you observe as you look will dictate how quickly you transition into that first turn?

      The steepness, flatness, draw of the water, what it looks like down the line….. all of that dictates how, when, and where you transition into a turn. ALL of surfing is COMPLETELY dependent on the wave. One of the biggest hurdles in surfing, that nobody talks about, is that all of your progression relies upon you learning to read a wave and react to it.

    I noticed that when you pop up on your back hand, your feet are not centered but rather lined up at an angle to your left. Is this encouraged?

    Chris can you offer a solution to the old man crew who aren't able to bring our knees to our chest during pop up. I personally keep getting put in the back seat due to my inability to keep my front knee bent during my pop up. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

      honestly, most of that comes down to consultation. need to assess your hip joint, ankle movement, knee movement, and then figure out where the limitation lies. Once that's determined, it's easier to start making improvements. If no interest in consultation, there are many stretch routines in the Surf Athlete App, both in the Perfect Pop Up program, and also the Stretches for Surfers 2.0 program that are aimed at restoring range of motion for a pop up.

      If you’re driving a bus versus a car, does looking become less important? Or is it still just as relevant?
      Why would it be different for a surfboard if it’s longer or shorter?
      You still need to see where you’re going and control the board via body control / orientation
