    Thanks for the great video! I see champion Mick Fanning hands are firmly on the board and do not leave until both feet are in position and he is in a secure low squat - his back foot comes down first before his front foot @2.56 your demo has your hands nowhere near the ground when you pop up- thus your feet could land anywhere and your board would stall without the downward pressure on the hands like Fanning shows?

      Hey Alan, thanks for taking the time to reach out. Yes, you are correct in your observation. I'm not as flexible as Mick and have become accustomed to popping up in the way you observed. You are right that there is potential for my feet to land in a random place on the surfboard but at this point in my progression, it is very rare. However, I do strive pop-up more like Mick and work consistently at developing strength, speed and flexibility as I pop-up.       I’m an older surfer who used to be able to pop up better than I do now. And I definitely do not have the requisite mobility to get my front foot where it needs to be if my hands stay on the board.
      Lately I’ve been trying to do the explosive push up technique to get my hands off the deck and make room for that front leg. I think maybe that’s what I used to do when I was younger. Never paid much attention to those details when it was easy for me, ha!
      I think taking the hands off the deck does make it harder to pull off down-the-line, into-the-barrel takeoffs though. Without that extra control from the hands to set trim, I think I would tend to straighten out just enough as I drop in to miss the rest of the wave as it reels down the line. But maybe a well-timed, powerful bottom turn would make up for that…
      It’s also physically harder to explode off your hands if it’s a bumpy late foamy takeoff. But maybe I just need to develop more power. With my body type, that might be more feasible than extreme flexibility.

    something I noticed is that almost all pop ups have the back foot land first because the distance that the foot has to travel makes the back foot land first

    Nice video, thanks! Just during the demonstration of pop up on land it seems like a lot of the motion or support is coming out of your back foot touching the ground - impossible to do that on anything else than longboards, so I'd say it should be avoided during practice?

You're implying that because on a shortboard my back foot would be hanging off the back of the board that practicing this style of pop up on land is not beneficial because you can't translate it into the line up on anything other than a longboard?       Hey, yes this is a great question. Sorry for the late response. I don't know how I missed it. Anyway, you are correct that there is a huge amount of motion coming from your back foot but not in the most obvious way when it comes to shortboarding. You make a great point that on a longboard or land this is easy but on a shortboard it's impossible. Here is what you aren't seeing. On a shortboard, you use the tops of your feet and shins to generate that upward pressure to pop-up. Imagine doing the dance move the worm. That roll from your shins to the tops of your feet can create enough upward pressure/spring to bring your legs up underneath you. Does that make sense? Can you visualize what I'm talking about?       surfprotechniques so on a shortboard (or practicing on land without relying on the feet), you press off the shins for momentum to bring the feet up under the chest? thanks for the clarification.

      @@okallixti5065 Yes but it can be hard to simulate. The most creative way I've seen thus far is a client of mine uses a huge trunk (old school box that would carry clothes or other items while traveling back in the day). They taped a yoga mat on it for comfort and slippage. Their feet naturally hang off the back and it's a great way to simulate popping up on a shortboard. If you're just doing it from the ground it's hard not to utilize your toes. But if you can refrain from using your toes yes rolling up off your shins and tops of your feet would be ideal. I hope that helps. About 70 of us are doing a pop-up challenge at the moment and seeing game-changing results. We're doing 3 sets of 10 pop-ups a day for 30 days. The strength and speed that is built up will help your pop-up tremendously even if you're using your toes. Please feel free to reach out with other questions to chapin@surfprotechniques.com

      @@SurfProgressionTechniques I meant He is saying that You should not touch your feet on the ground (sand) when practicing. Only the knees.

      @@renanmoraes2485 Yes, many instructors feel using your feet when practicing land pop-ups does not give a realistic scenario. I think doing the motion itself is helpful.       Yes, that is a good observation and very true. Beach/Land pop-ups can be used in different ways. This was a demonstration of how to build strength and flexibility. There are other creative ways to simulate pop-ups that can help more specific things. For example, using a park bench is a great way to practice if you want to pop up on a shortboard more efficiently. Make sure to hang your shins off the bench and put some padding down so you don't scrape your shins. All the best!

    When you pop up should your back foot land flat or on the toes?

      Hey, thanks for the question. It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Also if you're riding a longboard or shortboard. If you're going to pull straight into a barrel on the takeoff on a shortboard then you'll be more up on your toes. If you're popping up to ride down the line on a shortboard it will be more flat. It's similar on a longboard but in both examples, you rarely pop-up and land with a completely flat back foot. I hope that answers your question.
