Back in the 70s I got a used turntable, it did not play well at all, so I took it in to a shop in Seattle, and the guy was showing me what he had to do to set it up right. I was surprised at that time he had a test record also and an Oscilloscope. I did not know there was that much to set up a turntable, I think it cost me about $40, a lot of money back then. But I bet it's about $200 or more now. Prob a lot more. I wish I had my old Hi Fi stuff now ... I traded it all for a Harley.
If it performs as well as it looks -- certainly inspired by Linn -- and with the right cartridge the setup should be a huge hit with folks who want their systems to have a classic, vintage look. Nice vid.
Nice video, I have a 2 xperience classic that I bought over 10 years ago and is still running strong. I see the biggest upgrade they made since then is on the back of the tonearm. The best thing about pro ject is if a part does go bad you can find almost every part, from the platter, the belts, bearings, whatever on the internet..
Grammes are a unit of mass, Newtons are a unit of force (specifically weight in this case). The relationship between the two varies because of changes in gravity, due to where you are on the planet. Scales measure weight, even if they give readings in units of mass.
I suspect the thinner larger belt is for 45 and 78rpm using the lower larger part of the motor pulley (so it requires a belt change to run 45 rpm and it is electronically adjusted to 78rpm. The use of a larger belt also means the 33rpm belt is not over stretched on the lower larger dia section of the pulley.
Fernando, I saw that you showed the Fozgometer but didn't use it in your setup. Curious as to why not. My ProJect Classic has been great and nice to see so many similarities between mine and this new model. I really wish I could do the speed changes with the little buttons which mine does not allow. Also discovered that my dustcover was picking up low frequency energy in my room (even when closed) so have to remove it every time I'm playing vinyl.
I realize hes very well linformed and like most guys too stubborn to read instructions, but id really have been looking for those feet long before I started dragging this (expensive-!!) rig around on the table
I find Pro-Ject's Xtension 9 Evolution a real stunner, in part because I prefer 'old school' wood plinths and classic looks. To me a lot of modern TTs look like something you'd run a DNA sample through in a CSI lab...functionally superior but hideous to the point of fugly...
@@vals8062 What he means is that the table will rumble and it likely carries up to the platter as it's directly coupled to the platter, whilst belts isolate the motor from the platter. I run belt drive, btw.
The Technics stuff is so badly overrated. My olde Pioneer PL51 direct drive of 40years is better put together than the £4000 GAE ltd edition. The new Technics are often warped in the platter and have crappy arm lifts. Belt drives and suspended ones are alot vetter sounding... they can loosen up and boogie for one thing! I still use the Pioneer for some dance music genres where it excels but for 80% of my listening the Thorens and Projects satisfy me alot more
Pro-Ject stuff varies wildly, I've had the RPM's and they are more like MDF toys rather than a serious piece of HiFi, at the other end of the spectrum we have the Evo series, a totally different story...and above that we have EAT turntables (Pro Ject and EAT are related). p.s No need for spindle bearing oil?
A lot of tables these days come with the spindle bearing oiled so no need to deal with it. VPI does not, and has you putting a drop in and note when you did and once a year, put a fresh drop in the spindle bearing. I have the Rega P6 and it came pre-oiled and ready to go, except for the platter, adding the cartridge as I didn't buy mine with a cart as I already had a decent one. All I had to do was remove the insert that raided up the sub platter just enough to not rest on the bottom of the bearing well during shipment, install the cartridge, and plug in the Neo power supply and it was more or less ready, oh, as this table, the counter weight had to be installed.
Can one fit a different tonearm on the Classic Evo? The VTA adjustment is possible but a real pain. Just found your channel Fernando and I'm loving it!
I have the same turntable that came with the Ortofon Red MC cartridge. I also purchased a matching Pro-ject phono box DS2 USB. Right from the first set up I noticed a slight but perceptible hum. The hum was mitigated by moving a my modem/router away from the phono amp. I couldn’t remove the hum completely so I decided to purchase a EAT linear power supply. This particular unit has two linear power supplys in it which allows me to replace both PSUs for the EVO and DS2 phono amp. I did a little research and found out that the maker/engineer of EAT also makes high end turntables and just happens to be the wife of the owner of Pro-ject. The products are also a perfect marriage as the hum is completely gone. In fact, I can place my modem/router on top of the phono amp and there is absolutely gone. So if your customers want to eliminate some crappy PSUs look into a EAT Linear power supply. www.europeanaudioteam.com/en/eat-lps-linear-power-supply-wp000037.html
Nice video. Funny how you start off mentioning mixing with an MC240. My Classic SB (with pre-installed Ortofon Red MC)is mixed with an MC240. Specifically bought this model because of the the Linn "look".
feet adjustable for leveling-?, not tightened up like a lugnut. On something this expensive im sorry but im gonna look at the instructions just to be sure of something I wasnt aware of -
What are your thoughts on that swinging anti skate counter weight? I noticed that it continues to swing long after the record is playing. Does that have any effect on the sound?
This type of anti skate affects the sound less than a spring type (which are prone to resonance), and works better than a magnetic type (which are prone to hysteresis).
A perfect example of how not to proceed. Instead of opening the manual first and familiarizing himself with the individual components and how to assemble them, he throws the manual away as unnecessary and then guesses what to use for what. A real thinker. Cemeteries and emergency rooms in hospitals are full of them.
Its NOT cheating to look at the manual especially on something this expensive, ITS SMART. Im still perplexed at why after many decades of developement the high end table still insist on using a piece of fishing line and a weight to adjust anti-skating, seems very crude for such a precision device as a tone arm.
In short - yes. Depends on thickness ofc, but with supplied plastic scale, you should measure the wtf by putting scale directly on the metal platter, then it is really accurate.
Carbon fiber on the tonearm is just there for effect, make it look more exotic than it really is - its not actually a carbon fiber tone arm at its heart just aluminum - but nothing really wrong with that.
It’s ok looking. But that on off button is awful. I would also rather the platter turn when you move the tonearm. I thought about getting a new turntable but after seeing this I’ll stick with vintage.
Opens the box and smacks the delicate main bearing shaft onto the table, then proceeds to rough handle this "precision instrument" througout the rest of the video. He will need his test equipment to help repair the damage he inflicted on the turntable. Does this guy actually have a hi-fi business?
Anti skate didnt not perform well as adjusted, oughtta be freaking perfect for this kind of money, hinges should be self holding. Always amazes me the little things they leave out on this stupid expensive stuff
In my opinion Technics has great motors but the tonearm is...what it is (Yes I know there is the EPA100 and others with swappable wands) That said, a new 1200MK7 is a no brainer for a simple to use, reliable turntable. Not sure how the Pro Ject tonearms sound/track, though.

That's exactly right they just cheap out on it. I'll never buy one again
The alternative anti skate methods are magnetic, which doesn't work so well, or springs, which degrade sound quality
Would the tracking force change if the record mat was removed? Or the thickness of the record?
In short - yes. Depends on thickness ofc, but with supplied plastic scale, you should measure the wtf by putting scale directly on the metal platter, then it is really accurate.
