  • VW have made one of the best cars in the world for years in the Golf. The R is easily one of the best cars on the road today. So why take a perfectly good car and ruin it by making it a plug in hybrid polished turd. Just to satisfy politicians.

You can have that, but it will be many years old. Some say well over 40y, probably 45 gets you close.
I don’t object to computer based ABS & traction control. Computers calculating MPG and showing estimated range to empty aren’t much more complicated than the Casio pocket calculator we had at school (I’m old).
I don’t like anything that provides remote control of the vehicle.
No point is eschewing all connectivity for its own sake because you’re tracked by every roadside camera anyway.
But the earliest tech that gave you live traffic updates & then integrated that into navigation systems do not enable remote disabling of the car, as far as I know.
What I don’t know is when in U.K. there was mandatory installation of systems which could be used for that purpose, even though it was not disclosed to us.
      Does anyone know?
I think it wasn’t the 1990s. Most of us didn’t really start noticing the web outside of work until the early noughties and this accelerated crazily once smartphones became mainstream. That wasn’t so very long ago.

    • @GT380man
      @GT380man 5 месяцев назад +2

@@davelowe1977Unfortunately, while technically they could, it would be illegal. EU regulations for years have required installation of hardware and software that enables remote interference with some functions of the car.
No one I know knows how far back this goes.
ADAS readiness has been creeping up on us for well over a decade. I believe full fat ADAS is mandatory on all new cars sold in the EU from summer 2024 & go live is a year later.
      That’s why I’ve sold a modern (2017) car & bought a 2004.
I don’t know if that’s old enough, but it probably is.
I’m really shaken by seeing Geofencing & geotiming openly referred to in modern car software.

Financial Times today - Elon Musk has shut down the division that runs Tesla's
Supercharger business, dismissed two senior executives and fired hundreds more staff as the electric-car maker continues its restructuring amid a sharp downturn in the EV market.
Musk announced internally on Monday that the head of the superchargers group, Rebecca Tinucci, and Daniel Ho, head of new products, would be leaving along with their entire teams. About 500 people were in the supercharger group, the memo said.
Tesla's supercharger system is among the largest charging networks in the world, and was one the reasons the company enjoyed such a commanding lead over rival carmakers for so long. While the supercharger operations will continue, the move raises questions over the future of the charging business.
The entire public policy unit will also be disbanded following the departure of its leader, Rohan Patel, in the middle of April.

All this anti EV nonsense won’t change the future which is set in stone.
What it will do is cost jobs. Continuous negative rhetoric gives politicians good reason not to court future EV production or battery manufacture.
Other countries are way ahead. EVs are coming because that’s what other countries are making. If you want Britain to be excluded from the future of car industry keep knocking it. Soon every car you can buy will be Chinese and you can pat yourself on the back.

I looked into it and on a full charge, it couldn't get close to my 35 mile commute, so would have to be in 'hybrid mode' all the time, or part way electric, and then finish the journey off on ICE (not good for the engine as just a shorter journey). I looked at mpg figures and it was far better just to get a diesel. These are ok if all you do is 10 miles each way or pop to the shops up the road all the time in the car, but that's about it.

@@Philip---pip267 In the US, the IonIQ costs ~$60k to replace the battery pack. MSRP for a new IonIQ runs a few grand more, so by the time your battery pack fails, the car is worth less than the repair due to depreciation.
Not saying they aren't good cars - everyone I've spoken to that owns one seems to love it, aside from a needed firmware update that illuminates the brake lights under aggressive regen so drivers don't get rear-ended for decelerating rapidly.

Hybrids are the second fastest sales dropping engine type after diesel. As soon as they are gone, like diesel, the better. Thankfully it’s less than 30 years before all ICE engines are gone.

How are they ruining a good car? They still make the GTI and R and all manner of other models with a plethora of engines. This is a completely different model that will suit a lot of people. Click bait videos keep the gravy train rolling though.....

@@andrewwaller5913 yes, as per my other comment, it's a GTE. A tuning company near me has one as a demonstrator - 273hp/360lb/ft and is doing 170mpg average. Pretty good IMO.
My comment still stands - I don't know what Trevor is getting flustered about (other than he seems to get is a fuss over absolutely anything) the GTi and R are still available, so it's not like VW have ruined anything; they've just provided a different model if people want to buy it.
Like I said, click bait keeps the pounds rolling in
