  • I go back to drive our own 2018 VW Golf GTE to see if it's still the best Hot Hatch Hybrid around. We talked through Golf values and whether can we power this by Solar going forward.
The last VW Golf GTE video was 2 years ago and had over 26000 views and it's great to drive this car again.
The home solar is now up and running so I can gain data and tell you how it's going. Hope you enjoy these videos of the VW Golf, they are just one of the best all-round cars.
We would love you to subscribe to the channel so you don't miss our content in the future.

Which GTE did you get mark 7? And the mpg you get is this with the high voltage battery 🔋 fully charged?

    • @paulwoodward9659

@@jonathansealy8399 i think mine is the mark 7.5 (2018) and yes with battery fully charged in hybrid mode around town. Once the battery is discharged the petrol engine alone does about 55 mpg and if you run it constantly in GTE mode this drops to 45mpg.

The Model Y very strong re-gen that you've mentioned is the one-pedal-driving, when you don't use the brakes basically at all. You can disable that

  • @rizwanmurtaza464
    @rizwanmurtaza464 5 месяцев назад +2

Push the gearstick back to switch between B mode and D mode. B mode is a little like engine breaking and provides more or the regen, perfect for city driving. D mode has no regen until you hit the break, more suited to A roads - similar to coasting.

Gosh this is interesting. I am an Australian in southern Poland, that is to say, right on the edge of Kraków. And in fact, I only "drive" an electic bike as people would say here. Or really, it might as well only be just a Hollander, really an Omafiet, as it was that got me into and across and into Europa the first couple of times. But I really enjoyed the story of your younger years with cars. And now . . . the collecting modern classics series is really growing on me . . . but most of all, your sense of values is so superbly and interestingly good, I love it. And here, for us, me and my very best friend who has a little diesel Megane with 260,000 km on the clock, and her mechanic living next door, keeping the servicing in super perfect good order. And she is following her brother' example of aiming easily to get 500k out of Renault diesel. I suppose this is all pretty ordinary stuff but her little car looks a lot like the GTE, just a lighter shade, a bit bigger boot, and maybe not so long in the nose.
But it is so interesting. So very, very interesting, especially put together with your sense of values. And can you imagine it, the numbers you mentioned, they make absolute sense here in Małopolska. And your observed comparison with Tesla - our very good friend got a Model 3 and . . his old tiny low slung Lexus hybird cruising down Zakopanska at 130 kph was like flying on a magic carpet by comparison to the battering you get when he all too easily takes the new thing up to the "ton".
But here is the thing. Apparently a base model 2022 GTE in Poland is 182,000 złoty. That is a lot of money here. But anyway, we have to find that much two or three times over in order to finish a house that is only half done. However . . . the local Gmina / Council sent around their audit guy for their subsidy program on solar and associated batteries, and the heat pump . . . and he says for our contribution we must find 15,000 złoty. But with that we also have to find somewhere to put 12 metres of solar. We have a single ridge line - but he says it is not enough. So . . . the next video should be super great! I want to see you work your magic with the numbers. Just to see you do it well! And by the way, your estimation of travel distances are also spot on. Everyone wants to go down for a walk in the mountains, to Zakapane, to the Tatras or somewhere along the border to the south, and that is a good 100 km away. But in all of southern Poland, even a hundred years ago, there were more airfields than there are superchargers now.

  • @duffieldmathstutor

Absolutely brilliant car - I've had mine 3.5 years covering nearly 60k miles in that time because everyone in the family wants to drive it!
It's a mk7 so has the analogue dials which I prefer and has over 110k miles in total - still drives superbly and has averaged around 65 mpg in mixed driving (be careful though this doesn't include the cost of the electricity so is a misleading figure).
There is a recall for the battery so well worth checking that it has been done. This is for potential water ingress and can only be done by selected dealers - resulted in a brand new battery on mine at 75,000 miles at no cost. Needless to say the battery still shows no degradation.
It is such a pleasure to drive - so easy and fun when you want it - genuinely quick in the real world. Has been over to Europe and is great on a long run. The boot is a bit compromised given the displaced fuel tank but sufficient for my needs. In this world of every increasing size of cars it's great as it fits in the garage!
My main concern is when things start to go wrong - I would imagine it is complex and expensive to fix - hopefully not before 200k miles though as I have no desire to sell it any time soon,

I was hoping to find some comments about the reliability on here.
Facebook groups have lots of horror stories about the mechatronic destroying itself.
I can't easily charge at home, so thought I'd get this but the 2015 cars with good mileage at dealers are still £12k about and for £16k I can get an E-Niro that'll easily do 250 miles, has a much bigger boot, better tech (apart from self park) and is as fast or faster to 60! It's 7 year warranty also kicks the Golf's backside of 3 years too!
Also the tyres are 55's so should be a more comfortable ride? Tested one already and it was lovely but you could feel the extra size - although only 15cms longer than my mk5!
Going to look at a GTE on Saturday just to find out what it's like!
Checked VW all in warranty will be £500 per year up to 100k miles so not too bad, so I just don't know what to do!?

I bought a 2017 Gte in June last year and been very happy with it for the most part. It broke down about a month ago due to the fuel rail failing, but I'm guessing that could happen on any car. Got 50k miles and no other problem... Yet *fingers crossed*
