VW Golf GTE 2021 review: do you actually need a GTI anymore?

The GTE used to be a warmed up version of the regular Volkswagen Golf, mixing a somewhat civilian engine with an electric motor for a bit more performance over the regular model and, crucially, the ability to drive on electric energy alone.
But the eighth-generation Golf is a bit different. The 2021 model now sits alongside the GTI and GTD in the company's performance line-up, and it now matches the petrol car on performance. It's also the most expensive car to not wear a Clubsport or R badge, which begs the question: has the new GTE made the GTI redundant?

You pull the gear selector back for instant sport mode. You set the minimum battery charge to whatever you want in the hybrid mode so you never run out of electric motor power as it will top up by using a very small amount of petrol. The climate control is very easily adjusted by touch bars so you never need to look down at it. For me it’s a Gti without the horrendous petrol cost. Only charge at home on cheap rate electricity, you can’t use fast chargers. I put half a tank of fuel in about every two months. Fabulous all rounder.
what do you mean with pulling back the gear selector? im getting a gte in a week so you got any tips?

Isn't it a fuel tank below the trunk floor, and batteries under rear seats (contrary to what's stated in this review)?
I assume yes. Having a Tiguan Phev, fuel tank is instead of spear part compartiment

Most probably the GTE. Having sport and economy in one is hard to find these days unless you go for a Tesla.
GTE , I’m an owner of the previous model and l love it.
Good company car, but dont many will chuck 36k on one of these

You can get porche , Range Rover Jaguar etc alote better cars

Thanks! And had the jacket on underneath the coat. Big bulky coats tend to make mic placement a tad tricky. So no costume change mid-review. Yet... - Cam

Super dreadful then for me
Notice to all. VW Golf 8 GTE bought in February 2023 and has been in the workshop for a month with noise problems in the gearbox. If you are interested in a model like this one, think very well before buying it, you will avoid a lot of problems.
The interior controls are awkward and badly thought out. I’m going for a 7.5 instead.
