  • The Volkswagen Golf GTE that's in showrooms in 2021 and beyond is a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid that promises to combine great efficiency with strong performance. Vicky Parrott tries out the GTE to find out if it's the best mk8 Golf of all. With a pure electric range of up to 40 miles and the back up of a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, it promises to be an incredibly versatile car. But can it justify a price tag of £36,000?

    I’d rather go with a plug in hybrid than a full EV car. It just makes a lot more sense if you have a long distance commute.

      If you do a long distance commute you're better with a diesel, that car is useless for that purpose.

    Great review Vicky - I agree with your prognosis in the main - not a gti but v.well built and can be peddled quickly in GTE mode. ..but it's not engaging at all. Think I'll stick with my old mark 7.5 GTE as our 4th car run-about 4 torso mover. Needs 75-80 mile range on e for me to make it a swapper!

    I really couldn't be happier with the car. I have previously owned two VW Golfs and wanted another one. After looking at many models I knew it would be another Golf. Of the 12,000 km I have driven, I will have done about 9,000 in electric mode and the rest with gasoline. If your trips are short, less than 50 km, this is an ideal car without wasting fuel. And if they are longer you have a four-cylinder engine to go to the end of the world. All the best

    Would go for Octavia IV or hybrid VRS over this. Arguably looks better or at least no worse, definitely more practical.

    I am a big fan of both the previous GTE and this one, very nice car let alone plug in and I do think this is the best look MK8 other than the GTI. Shame u can get so much more for your money with others even in the VW group.

  • @jamest5149

    I think you are missing the point with the cables and a plug-in hybrid, the cables are usually left at home for most… yes storage would be nice but you would lose something else in a small package as a hatch.

    I get confused with plug in petrol hybrids. Do you need to charge it or can you just always fill it up?

    • @CarGurusUK
      @CarGurusUK  Год назад

      A plug-in hybrid like the Golf GTE is designed to be regularly charged so that it can run on its battery and electric motor. In theory you could decide not to charge the battery and the car would still work via its petrol engine. However, that would miss the point of owning a PHEV, first because you wouldn't benefit from being able to run in EV mode, and second because the petrol engine would be dragging around the weight of the batteries for no particular gain. This guide has more detail: www.cargurus.co.uk/Cars/articles/should-i-buy-a-used-plug-in-hybrid#What%20is%20a%20Plug-in%20Hybrid%20Car?

    Why is the GTE going to be the only hybrid option for the Golf in the UK, and VW isn’t going to sell the normal e-Hybrid version of the Golf - which is available in foreign markets - in the UK alongside the GTE?

    Not bad, if you want a 4 door mini estate for 2 people, as with that boot it's useless for a family.

    Lots of unfair comparisons and obvious comments like it’s not a GTi - oh really? Comparing Skoda, Mercedes etc that do not have half the numerous technical or safety functions, so the reviewer needs to research far more rather than expressing personal unfounded opinions. How about ACC, IQ Lights, pedestrian/cyclist avoidance systems etc not on rival cars. Not a good review and seems very biased.

    Notice to all. VW Golf 8 GTE bought in February 2023 and has been in the workshop for a month with noise problems in the gearbox. If you are interested in a model like this one, think very well before buying it, you will avoid a lot of problems.

  • @thomash2806
    @thomash2806 3 года назад +3

    Depending on how you use them they have either the best of both worlds or the worst of both worlds. If the way you use it is not just right then when you’re using petrol you’re lugging an electric motor and heavy battery around for nothing and when you’re using the electric propulsion system you’re lugging a heavy ICE around for nothing. I have a friend who is very disappointed by a Mini Countryman PHEV and gets far worse fuel economy than with the petrol Mini it replaced... A Golf eTSi or an ID.3 are both far better.

    The interior is a disaster, a huge step back from the quality of the mk7-7.5 please vw rethink your infotainment system and touch buttons I can’t be the only one looking elsewhere because of it

  • @ram64man

    If it wasn’t for the bigger pack I still would gave brought the golf 7.5 gte tech such a better dash I really do not know what vw were thinking that dash isn’t the best and has a number of design flaws. Discontinue this interior before 8.5 vw it’s crap

    You can't hide weight in the corners. The GTE is far and overpriced. That's not even getting into its dangerous touch screen only/ no physical buttons interior

    • @alexandrupetrescu2163
      @alexandrupetrescu2163 3 года назад

      I actually think it handles very well in corners compared to a mk7/7.5 but the touch screen is indeed a hazard

  • @stevencampbell1150
    @stevencampbell1150 3 года назад

    One I think it's very expensive for a Golf which are hideously overpriced anyway, two, I get better mpg from my diesel Kadjar on the motorway and three, the battery range means at a 70 mile plus commute mainly on motorways I'd be charging this every day as I'd be lucky to get 20 miles out of charge so nope I'm not convinced by that one.

  • @ram64man
    @ram64man 3 года назад
