To make great great phones again like during the era of carl pei. I personally own the 7t nd i think it was the last great phone by OP. It had proper camera setup , good build, oxygen os was fun.. After that they started doing all the shitty things. Useless 2,5 mp sensors, plastic build, no ois, unnecessary colab with expensive brands nd thus increasing the price, they even basically copied one ui in oxygen os 11. 😂
@Kavin Suresh i am not telling the quality was very good . I am just saying that the hardware setup was good 48+16+12 . It didn't have useless 2,5 mp sensors like its successor just for the sake of calling quad camera setup.
I actually got mine for $599 just yesterday, which I'd argue is a relative steal for something that charges so fast and has such good specs. Granted, I upgraded from a Galaxy a10e and this is my first OnePlus device so I may be a bit biased, but I'm loving it. Perfectly satisfied with it so far.
@@martin.mp4 definitely! But what's your requirements and how much you wanna spend? OnePlus 8's camera is not great that's only downside otherwise it's a great deal... But still that device definitely worth 400$ and it deserves every single penny and you're getting it for 250$... I'd grab 3-4 phones if it was that cheap and camera issue can be fixed... Just want to say that the camera's delay problem is there also in OnePlus Nord,it's like they use a screenshot of the viewfinder for the preview to give the camera more time to process the shot.
It's true, and we have Apple to thank for that, and Samsung for following suit. Once Qualcomm noticed, they wanted the higher profit margins too and raised the prices of their SoCs
@@mistamaog Not just Apple and Samsung, but also those people that started buying phones at ridiculous prices. Consumers could've sent the hell of a message and put a stop to this trend by letting phones with ridiculous prices rot in the shelves.
Solution is easy , don't buy them , you really don't need a $1000 phone...buy a $200-$300 phone and get yourself a ticket to some gorgeous place you've always wanted to go. Why spending it on a gadget that will be obsolete next year ? And guess what , you can keep the phone also next year , save $1000 by doing it and you can go even more awesome place next year ;) And guess what , you don't really need to keep your phone only 2years , you can keep it until it brakes...maybe 3 years 4years , and every year you save a $1000 , isn't that mind blowing ?
It is a bit strange they included the monochrome sensor. Hypothetically, if it has the same focal length as the primary lens, it could be used to augment any portrait mode algorithms they're using more accurately than pulling data from the ultrawide for depth sensing purposes. This is actually something I believe Samsung is doing with the S21/S21+ and the included telephoto lens. Technically, it the 48mp sensor used for zoom shots is only a ~2mm equivalent increase in zoom vs the primary 12mp sensor on those phones but it manages to capture more detail on cropped photos due to the significantly higher megapixel count. The benefit I described earlier is they can rely on data pulled from this only slightly more zoomed "telephoto" lens to compare against the primary sensor to more accurately detect edges and depth for portraits. Using the ultrawide for such purposes would probably do a good job as well but distortion related to the focal length difference seems like it would introduce more errors in edge detection. With the telephoto being an almost identical focal length, the subject detected in the primary sensor's photo would line up nearly identically with the readouts from the secondary lens and the algos can then take the slight differences in the background created by the shifted perspective and very slight zoom increase to more minutely detect the subject's edges. Things like blurring the background around hair, the gaps between one's arms/torso, and around glasses/sunglasses would probably come out more consistently if they increased the sensitivity for said algorithms than it would if the primary lens was being paired with an ultrawide for such purposes (in this type of case, the algorithm would have to be meticulously trained to specifically detect these types of edges because they wouldn't line up well between the two photos due to the large shift in focal length). Is that what they're doing with the 2mp sensor? I'm not sure. They certainly could though. 2mp isn't very detailed but would definitely be detailed enough for portrait photography purposes in the way I've described. As someone who has access to both a plethora of camera systems from various cell phone manufacturers and some high end large sensor dedicated cameras, I'm sure you can appreciate the difference in quality that comes with the natural bokeh created via a large sensor. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to match that via software alone (at least without posing robotically in front of something like a contrasty checkerboard background) and using two sensors with very large differences in focal length requires the algorithms involved to be trained more meticulously to reduce the incidence of the aforementioned errors created. Imagine how hard it would be to catch a ball if you only had one eye or if your second eye had an ultrawide/zoom lens in front of it. Both instances would be significantly more difficult and require a lot of practice to get good at. Even still though, you'd never be quite as good as you'd be with two eyes with identical (or nearly) zooms/focal lengths. Depth perception is just a more universally simple endeavor with slightly separated sensors with similar focal lengths (like our eyes!).
I miss the time when OnePlus had compelling budget value-over-price smartphone offers. Now it has become impossible for me to get that because of the prices.
@豐haslan I wouldn't mind having not every new thing in my phone. I still am using my OnePlus 3T right now. I just wish they would do a 400-500€ phone that I could like. But now you can't tell me they didn't shift in terms of prices.
Probably the latter. The 6 was their peak and after that is when they started going downhill. Headphone jack gone, software update lifecycle gone, software aesthetic gone.
@@RomanOnARiver Do you think it is worth upgrading from my current 3T to a 6 if I can find one brand new. I'd like to keep it for as long as I can, maybe 2 or 3+ years.
Just picked one of these up after my 6T had a tragic work related accident lol. So far I'm enjoying it and it feels like a solid upgrade. It's actually a bit over kill for my use case but hopefully it will get to live the life my 6T didn't lol.
Well, I am disappointed in OnePlus... (And many other companies) They don't seem to care about longevity (Hardware) and value for money any more like they did in the old days. Almost everything got worse with every new product: - No removable battery anymore - No expandable storage anymore - Notches and Punch holes - Curved Screens - Ever larger and more expensive devices - No Headphone jack anymore Every point I mentioned is valid and will be mistaken for old or unnecessary. I guess they finally settled...
It's so weird MKBHD failed to mention that. I think it is important and, since he started comparing the two phones, a way more significant no-no when deciding which one to buy.
@@平和-v1z can't have a removable battery and water resistance. Expandable storage is slow. The OnePlus 9 does have a flat screen, I don't know if you watched the video or not, and the 7T I'm typing on does as well. I believe the 8T does too. I prefer a larger screen and notch or punch hole for content consumption. And their flagship is still under $1000. But to each their own. Don't buy it then.
Depth sensors are not entirely useless. If it does what it does well, it helps portrait mode pictures a lot with the DOF and Bokeh, and that's something commonly used by the average user, as opposed to macros and monochrome? (Like actually OnePlus, What the hell?) which are actually bloody useless.
I think the 20mp monochrome lens I had in my p20 pro was actually extremely useful as it combined with the main sensor to produce sharper images in addition to being a great camera. I'm an architecture student so I used it a lot to study shadows as it wasnt an artificial b&w photo
I feel like 1+ have lost their way. They are not trendsetters anymore, just trend followers... There's really nothing that stands out with the 9 series. Maybe 8 series was the last one that was true 1+, but that's already a bit of a stretch.
well they're actually transitioning into fullblown flagship pricing now. So that's why the last gen feels a lot more affordable. Probably in following generations they're gonna be closer to the pricing from this year
especially the 7 pro. comparable display (1440p, 90hz instead of 120), no camera holepunch, glass non-glossy back, better fingerprint placement, cheaper, good haptics, the list goes on- I feel like getting this would be a downgrade. I'll stick with my 7 pro for now.
Read between the lines and he told us what a POS this phone in total is. He can't tell it straight to us as it is, since he won't be getting phones before the next releases.
@@shreyashbhagat7213 I'm already thinking about it. Oneplus is more and more Chinese system based with colorOS now sold in China, I reckon nothing would be left of it for non Chinese customers by then.
Sure, that's if you WANT a new phone just to replace your slightly less new phone. But a lot of people NEED a new phone on any given time. That's why there's so many new phone releases every year. As long as you're not get sucked into trends and their marketing gimmick, I'd say let them throw out new phones as many as they want.
@@bakhtiarhossain07 Same but it comes with advancement of technology. Got the iPhone 11 Pro Max in 2019, skipped the 12 and if rumors are true I'll be skipping the 13 and waiting for the 14 in 2022 when supposedly the notch will be completely gone and replaced with a hole punch camera
For real. I could have hit 90% of what Marques told us without ever looking or touching that phone. Its not his fault at all. Its the stupid companies. Qualcomm releases a new chip every year and every year the companies release a rehash of the same phones with slight changes and not so slight price raises. The only innovation in phones that we see on this channel are on folding phones. That's it. That's the only area where you can draw a line in the last year or two of improvements or innovation.
Yup. Still on a Pixel 2 and I know it's at EOL, but it still works just fine and I'm only looking to upgrade to a 4A at this point, cause I'm not spending this much on a phone ever again.
I'm blown away by of all things the clarity of your voice. But what I'm more surprised by is my own limited perception in that I would not have imagined that was your voice, and for that, I apologize. Keep the great reviews and, if nothing else, I look forward to your continued narration.
The b&w camera I think actually has more resolution that it might seem. Color sensors have pixels that have filters on them for red green and blue light, and so they're arranged in blocks of 4x4 where pixels are red green and blue, and the 4th is either say a green or sometimes white. And the final image is like a mosaic of those different colors so it doesn't have that full resolution in fact. But monochrome sensors use all of the pixels to record information and you end up with a higher quality image with more information in it, compared to a color camera of the same resolution. I'm not entirely sure if this applies to the oneplus too but probably But in any case 2mp is still not a match for the main color sensor lol. But I guess what they mean when they say that it adds resolution, is that they combine images from the 2 sensors and they add the detail from the b&w cam in the spots where the main cam lost information because of the color filters
8:00 this is the reason oneplus is going downhill. They spent money on a sensor that improves on 200 year old technology, and didnt spend money on a ipx certificate. This is also why steve jobs was Worth his weight in diamonds, if someone aproached him with thst idea he wouldve slapped them across the face
But you know a certificate is just that.....a certificate? Like he pointed out, the phone is most likely waterproof anyway, they just didn't bother getting the certifate for it. And are you sure Steve Jobs would do that? Considering the iPhone went literally 8 generations before having any kind of waterproofing, years after many other brands already had it?
The monochrome camera is not just there for the b&w pics. It serves as an underlying physical camera in logical multi-camera devices to achieve more details in low light shots, and reduce the memory use while doing so. You can check the android source code guide for this information under "Monochrome cameras". You can watch Juan Bagnell's review on the OP 8T where he demonstrates the difference. Monochrome sensors are also used in scientific cameras to reduce noise.
@@bobbyman410 because you only need the contrast information. The megapixels make sense when you want to zoom in your image after taking a photo - the main sensor is responsible for this. The information captured in the main sensor is then combined with the contrast information from the monochrome sensor in processing, providing the details and contrast the main sensor missed out on in low light. Also, unless you want to zoom in your image (or crop it) very closely, 2 MP is basically HD resolution (1080p), so it is good enough for contrast information.
The 20 MP monochrome sensor on the Huawei P20 Pro took some really good photos (above what a simple B&W filter can achieve) and was a welcome addition IMO, but a 2 MP one does just seem pointless.
I love to break down comparison to the Galaxy at the end. Among the thousand of your reviews I've watched, This is actually one of your best reviews. Well punctuated. Great stuff. Keep it up.

The side rails on this OnePlus 9 isn't made of plastic-glass or as you describe it (i.e. glasstic). In the launch event of the 9 series, it was told that the sides of the phone actually has fibreglass. The 9 Pro has aluminium side rails. Just wanted to correct that. Not glasstic. Love your detailed reviews on various products. 👌🏼
And he makes it sound like the back is plastic - it's not. Both sides of the phone are gorilla glass, and the sides are fibreglass. It's literally not a "plastic" phone in any way shape or form.
Still using the 8. If I can be honest here. This is my first OnePlus phone. I've been wanting one for years. Overall it's basically what people have raved about. In my experience I think the cameras are good. Notice I said good. Not great, not amazing, but good. In good lighting and in slightly lower light, you're in that ball park. I think they still need to improve it. But it's not a deal breaker. Usually with my androids I notice lag and performance issues after a year. Not major but like a stutter, an inconvenience. Nothing like early days. The software....man. It's like Samsung and Pixel got together. Customizable while still being light and fast. Quick updates.
This!! I bought an 8T on It's launch and I'm super happy I did. The 9 looks like a downgrade to the 8T. Only thing I can think of is are the cameras on the 9 way better the 8T? I don't know.
Hehe I was feeling the same after watching the 9 pro review , was worried about regretting the decision of getting S21 ultra , but after seeing all reviews I feel I made the right decision and took advantage of the pre orders and pre booking advantages

There's something big RUclipsrs miss with Oneplus, and it's that their update policy is just bad these days. They are always behind in terms of security updates (the Open Betas have dropped in quality compared to years back and still usually behind) and their 1 gen or prior devices receive updates late and infrequently. Even if they finally get the updates, it's buggy. For example, the 7T series on the latest stable and Open Beta will exhibit large numbers of dropped frames in the UI after around 24 hours being on. This is from a fresh install too.

I can't thank you enough for actually saying "Why?" at 5:26!

For real. I could have hit 90% of what Marques told us without ever looking or touching that phone. Its not his fault at all. Its the stupid companies. Qualcomm releases a new chip every year and every year the companies release a rehash of the same phones with slight changes and not so slight price raises.
I'm not entirely sure if this applies to the oneplus too but probably
But in any case 2mp is still not a match for the main color sensor lol.

MKBHD should ask LTTs video editor for better solutions
The monochrome camera is not just there for the b&w pics. It serves as an underlying physical camera in logical multi-camera devices to achieve more details in low light shots, and reduce the memory use while doing so. You can check the android source code guide for this information under "Monochrome cameras". You can watch Juan Bagnell's review on the OP 8T where he demonstrates the difference. Monochrome sensors are also used in scientific cameras to reduce noise.
@@a0ch So why make it 2MP?
Keep it up.

In my experience I think the cameras are good. Notice I said good. Not great, not amazing, but good. In good lighting and in slightly lower light, you're in that ball park. There's something big RUclipsrs miss with Oneplus, and it's that their update policy is just bad these days. They are always behind in terms of security updates (the Open Betas have dropped in quality compared to years back and still usually behind) and their 1 gen or prior devices receive updates late and infrequently. Have you played snooker?
@@pranjal.147 Of course! And I'm a big Ronnie O'Sullivan fan!
@@CampusMania Wow. Ronnis is one of the greatest of any sport. Not just snooker. Pool is very popular in the US. Are you able to play snooker there?
@@pranjal.147 Both pool and snooker are not popular in the US. You can find pool tables everywhere but almost nobody is playing. It's rare to find a snooker table here.
@@CampusMania I knew that about snooker but not pool there. So how do you play there?
