Dust In The Wind: • "Dust In The Wind" Tut...
The Boxer: • "The Boxer" Full Travi...
I chose The Gambler as an example because it only has 3 chords (D, G, and A), and many people know it and it's a great singalong song.
As I note in the end of the video, the actual song is in Eb, so if you want to play it in that key without bar chords, put the capo on the 1st fret. Also, the song modulates in the middle, which means all the chords are moved up one half-step (one fret). I ignored this.
One more thing: many chord charts online are wrong--I stand by the chords I present in the video.
Thanks for watching, and feel free to comment with things you'd like to learn.
Brian
Hi Brian, First let me say I am an 83 year old that has been trying to learn to play the guitar for over 40 years. I have tried private lessons, youtube videos and self help but have not achieved this yet. Also let me say that of the hundreds of youture videos i have watched you are absolutely the best. I learned more from your video teaching Travis picking than all the other hundreds I have watched. What part of the country do you reside? I do have one request........in trying to match my metronome to your video of Kenny Rogers, The Gambler...........what speed are you playing this? Many thanks. jd
Thank you for that!
I don't think I had a metronome on, and I'm not sure the tempo stayed consistent.
Are you saying you want to have your metronome going while playing along with the video? Or you just want to match the tempo for your own practice away from the video? It looks like when I played the whole song it was about 76 BPM.
If for some reason you wanted to have your metronome going at the same time as the video, don't bother! The video is your metronome in this case.
Happy playing!
Thanks much. I believe the 76BPM helps much and thanks again for the much informative video. All the best. jd
Hey Brian, you are fantastic and very patient.
Thank you, I appreciate that
This is an awesome lesson. I’m new to Travis picking and you explain it very well.
good!
Farkin’ love these lessons. So chill. Thank you.
you got it my friend
I inherited my brother's guitar now that my mom recently passed. She had it in her room since 1992 when my brother died. I've had it now for only 2 days and I am happy to find your lessons! I'm watching and cannot wait until I get home from work and start! thank you!!!
that is great to hear, and Music is so valuable in difficult times as I have also learned.
I'll try to keep the videos coming
Thanks Brian, let me keep trying until i master it ❤
nice and easy
Love it. Really like your style of teaching. Also like the background noises from the neighborhood. It is like hanging out with you, meditatively Travis picking :)
mission accomplished
What a lesson, Brian? You made it so simple and I am going to jump on my Guitar and try Travis picking now.
I have promised myself that in few months time, I am going to master either The Boxer or Gmbler. Two of my favorites since I was in my teens. I am fast approaching the big 60 and I am confident that I am going to do it. By the way, I am an Ethiopian who travelled the five Continents. I had to sing in one of Austin's 6th street Country Music bars back in 2001 to the surprise of many of the Texans. I still cherish the moment. But, singing while playing the guitar is on my Bucket's list. Thanks for your lesson and have a great week. Cheers, Seyoum.
good luck my friend. remember to keep it simple so that you can relax and make music. If you do that then you win.
thanks again, i can say i am getting it! i can travis pick :) so fun!
Awesome!
Brian I didn’t have a problem with positioning of the thumb on the three chords, but on the D and A-chords I had a bit of a problem as to the notes that the middle and pointer finger were picking. By playing along with you I think I figured them out. On the D chord it looks like you pick a D on the B string and an F on the high E string. As far as the A chord goes, you pick an A on the G string and a C# on the B string. On the G chord you pick the open G and B strings. The thumb knows where to go on the 3 chords. Thanks very much and Best regards, 77 year old Yukon Dave
yes you got it Yukon Dave, happy picking. Please note it's an F# on the E string for the D major.
Love it!!!
Thank you from Denmark 😊🙏🏻
you got it
You are most welcome!
Thank you!! Just found you. Very easy to rehearse with …❤would you Hallelujah?
I could for sure do Hallelujah but i gotta finish these 5 first
thank you!
you got it
Good job!
Thanks!
Where do you live? I live in Teslin, a small town in the Southern Yukon. Really enjoying your method of teaching. Thanks, Dave
i'm glad to hear that, I'm coming to you from Brooklyn New York
Brian do you have a tab for the gambler? If you do, how would I access it? Thanks, Yukon Dave
Hi Yukon Dave!
so you mean a note for note breakdown?
I stay away from tabs, if I write anything down it's with the note names.
Where are you getting stuck?
Need to show me what these cords look like so i can write them down not just D G A but the finger cords. That would help me learn better
Do you mean which strings the right hand is plucking? D G and A are the only chords in the song.
Ive got you on very slow, im sorry im new
The only thing I wish you tutorial guys would call the strings by their numbers instead of their name easier to remember
Never! please take a few minutes to remember the names of the strings! It is infinitely better--you want to know the names of the notes don't you?
Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie
I wish you could’ve played the first verse and chorus all the way through before teaching at explaining
yeah that makes sense
Your going to fast for this beginner
