Reiko Ioane doesn't break tackles and doesn't set his wings up often. He is a physical freak but little else.

@@tikiticko Yeah bro thats where I think having the right combinations could unlock Abs attack & bring better flow & continuity with Chiefs 9/10 combination of Ratima/Dmac same with TJ/Beaudy who've played together at the Canes many years, then there's The midfield pairing of Jordie/Proctor who I think could be absolutely deadly & we saw just a lil bit of what Proctor brings against the Fijians his distribution skills, running & supportive lines to set his outside backs up is the best in the country, reminds me alot of Conrad Smith just with more pace, then there's the Blues title winning locking pair of Tuipulotu/Darry, also Blues finishers on the wings with Air Jordan at the back & Saders powerhouse front row coming off the bench! The potential & talent this Abs team have under Razor is limitless...

It is not that we want to see Rieko on the wing, Ross.
It is that Rieko never passes the ball.
We talk about the ABs problems with the rush defence, but when opposition knows he doesn’t pass it means that they tighten up even more. So where you see the rush not giving him time I see his lack of passing as encouraging the rush to come even faster.

How can anyone argue for Rieko at centre when he has no distribution skills, no decernible ability to create space, or break or beat defenders? Hes a worldclass winger guy runs 100m comfortablely under 11 seconds and is a physical freak but he offers little else.
I would assume that BB will be our impact back off the bench. With Will Jordan starting.

@kenaristainton8746 It was only one game though and only provincial pre season as well. Lord had a few super games but still don't think they should start imo.
It's no coincidence that BB best performances lately are off the bench. Once Jordan is fully ready he should start 100%. Barrett is a great option to have off the bench though. Even if we move Jordan to the wing late in the game.
This is what is most annoying about the all black set up its constantly being tampered with so that players and combinations cant properly.develop .

I agree, it’s almost like they are not sure who should be where. Put Will back at wing with Rico and let the man (BB) play his game. And build combinations cause that’s what matters in the end.

Will had his run on the weekend and was fine. He's a class act and is good to start. He doesn't need to come off the bench.
Boden is our trump card off the bench as he gets to see where he can strike as players tire, and his attacking pace catches everyone out... being able to cover the 10 jersey just adds more value to him on the bench
The one thing I love about the boks, they just surprised everyone again yesterday. People expected one thing, and yesterday, they just switched it up with Toni's play. And still blooding new players to add to it.

I'm a Springbok fan, but i agree with this comment. Believe his tactical game would have allowed them to be in a better position.
Will is a shoe in for fullback with BB on the bench covering 1st-five and fullback. Not sure why there is any discussion. This is the Razor era not Foster.

BB has always been amazing off the bench. When he was a youngster and recently. Coming on against tired backlines he’s lethal, and his experience invaluable, kicking and running game, whatever the All Blacks need, he can change things in a second half.
In South Africa we are so glad D Mac is at 10 and not Bauden.Blows our mind the All Blacks not putting BB in there.Especially with no commanding no 9.
We need a centre that can create space with footwork and pass the ball under pressure, as well as a defensive monster. All out speed is more of luxury on a player who has the other skills. Reiko was a great winger and average centre. Watch our backline open up with a centre with vision and skill. Dont know who that is yet😅

What are these guys on about? Reiko Ioane had multiple chances to pass to the edge and he refused. He blew multiple potential try scoring opportunities. He’s had his go, time to move on from him.
If you rewatch the games the rush defence England showed nullified Jordi Barrett who is meant to distribute to set up the out side backs

@@mthabitX and as a Springbok supporter I'd argue that mental strength is what makes a great team, so a loss can't be ignored just because the Springboks "don't rock up mentally against Australia". The only thing I would argue is that if the Boks do lose (it would really be tail-between-the-legs stuff but entirely possible) it does not necessarily make the Irish the best all of a sudden because of their results to a team that would have just lost to Australia. That just brings the other teams back into contention as being the best, but realistically, the best, whoever it is, in this day and age can expect to lose here and there due to how close the top teams are now.
Reiko to the wings make him earn that jersey. ALB & Proctor deserve that spot better distribution and defence
Agree with AB selections. Chiefs combo already in place with Cortez and DMac. Jordan deserves a start at 15 with Beaudy on sub. Rieko also starts, Proctor has to wait. Loose forward is more difficult to predict.
you dont have to be a genius to see that jordan will start at full back to get mins vs argentina and barrett will be bench cover for both Dmac or Will. But when we play the boks, barrett will start at 1st 5 and will jordan will start at fb after notching up minutes and Dmac will be benched.
Barret has always been great at fullback and off the bench, he's only ever been a good greedy individual making the backline around him worse when he starts at 10.(however good he makes himself look)

Jordan is our best winger. play bb off the bench unless we need him at 10 or 15. our new HB's are awsome. throw riko out the door. play proctor and keep playing him. nzru you were mad to get rid of laumapi and faianganuku both in midfield would be great but as of now we cant change Jordie at 12. hes fine. has to work on his coms for passing especially, however players not expecting 'the pass' is just crazy talk in a rugby game. so dont blame Jordie for passing when players should be ready for it.

he was downright awful against Australia last year and people still thought he played well, he has showed the same worrying signs throughout his SR career so I doubt Razor even recognises it.
Don't get me wrong I would love to start Beauden Barrett any day of the week BUT the fact is what you cannot deny - Barrett's unbelievable impact off the bench at fullback! He did this when he started in the ABs and 12 years later he is the x-factor to the point of closing a game out that he is the difference between winning and losing a game!
This should be an All Black tactic not a selection reason - who do you start at fullback, Jordan or Barrett! This is a no-brainer - start Jordan not because of Jordan should be starting BUT because you want Beauden Barrett coming on in the last 25!!!!!
The mention of Rieko "not performing poorly" isn't even the issue. AB's lofty standards mandates that our midfielders need to be consistently performing great. We can't just settle for "servicable". We need to strike a better balance of solidness, risk and audaciousness - whether that be through personel changes or system changes remains to be seen. The facts are, Jordie is always safe as VC, Rieko's is under pressure with ALB and Proctor hot on his heels.
Every one has forgotten. Rieko is a world class winger who was put to Centre. He’s tall and fast and big body’d, and good under a high ball as well as a great defender. IMO he’s currently playing in a position that he was thrust into because of his Super Rugby side’s deficiencies. He is to this day, the best winger in the world, again, in my opinion!

*BB is the perfect player for a 6/2 split, on the bench he can play 10-15 with ease. WJ is a backup again but must start, again 15/11/14 maybe even 10’if you’re in trouble. After five years of this 'lets convert this 10 to a 15' obsession NZ rugby as a whole has, how about we try actual fullbacks at 15. No one else seems obsessed with the 10 = 15 'dual play-maker' thing that's rarely paid off in the way we're constantly told it will.
what about ALB, guy is in much better form than Reiko and he feeds the outsides a lot better as well. Plus he's a genuine defensive leader.
People acting like Reiko has played awful when the AB's no longer have that edge over teams like they used to but when you look at the small details he has been a great workhorse, both in attack and defense
Interesting that ALB not worth a mention. He is very accurate in what he gives and is a genuine test match performer.
I 100% don't want 10 cover to be already playing tired out at 15. Any time you want to change 10 you want to be able to make a fresh accelerated impact change. Beaudan has always been great off the bench at both 10 or 15.(which is where he also started his AB career)
If Beaudan plays 15 i want to see Plummer on the bench.
"Not played poorly" should not be criteria for selection. And that's pretty much the strongest praise I've been able to give Reiko "sometimes". By any measurable stat metric, he should not be there this year or last year.
Jordie and Reiko has now been usurped by ALB and Proctor.
Jordie has always been a chancer at 12 and Reiko was always a wing.
Should be Bauden Barrett his form is good and Jordannow has to play his way into it off the bench. Or start barrett at 10
Why isn't ALB even mentioned in your conversation around centre? He played centre for the Chiefs throughout Super Rugby and had a blinder against Fiji ..... surely he is also an option.
So obviously Razor was thinking about ALB at centre even if he was not included in your discussion.
This is why having former/current players on chat shows could be problematic. While this is the much better show in NZ (when they do Xs and Os, especially Parsons, I'll listen to the same segment 3 or 4 times - it's awesome, I wish they would do a lot more of it), some former players are, sometimes, understandably, hesitant to analyze players. They confuse analysis with criticism. The issue is whether or not they're going to objectively analyze guys that they've played with or against. Bryn can do it about Rieko, but is just a little too nice about it. Parsons won't/can't do it, or is just wrong. Rieko is clearly not a center. He could have been one of the great wingers of all time. The comments below are spot on - he's an elite athlete, but is not a center. Doesn't pass. When he first moved to center, his defense was pretty bad. Justin Marshall knows this and is pretty open about it. Razor HAS to see that Rieko is not a center. I feel the worst for ALB who's been wasting away behind Rieko and Jordie when he's clearly a natural midfielder. Also, letting Bundee Aki and Ngani Laumape go was a huge mistake. One of those two could have been playing 12 and ALB could have been playing 13 the last few years and we wouldn't be having this conversation.
If WJ going to be our 15 for this WC cycles, our 9 & 10 (or even 12) needs to be really good at attacking/contestable kick. WJ is a lethal finisher, and his high ball defense is nit bad either, it’s the attacking kick that hasn’t been his main staple playing style or Razor’s planning a different game style for ABs going to 2027.

We need to stop thinking starting 15 and reserves. BB position is 23 and it’s as important as being a 15. Have him as 23 lengthens his playing career.

As a saffa dude I'm not entirely convinced the boks are looking the greatest yet, tbh I was more impressed with the ab's first showing against an England team that have had some time to gel. It was messy sure but in typical ab style they got there in the end.

Fact of the matter is Reiko has done best for the ABs on the wing.
Blah, blah, blah. Should Reiko be replaced by Proctor? Yes. Should Ratima start? Yes. Will Jordan? Start on the wing, then fullback in the last 30 minutes. That half back on screen struggles to speak English and adds nothing.
From everything I've seen from Will Jordan at Fullback I wouldn't even put him in the top 5, it's a crucial defence and kicking role and he gets failing marks in both. He's one of the greatest, if not THE greatest of the wingers playing at the moment and he's wasted anywhere else. I just worry others will cop the blame for what happens when he spends the entire game out of position like what happened against Australia last year. Passing when he needs to kick allowing the defence to shut down the eventual kicker, DMac ended up getting dragged for not kicking Jordan's kicks well enough, Stevenson got dragged for missing Jordan's tackles, Christie made enough of Jordan's tackles to get a glowing review but he should've been focusing on his job instead.
Beauden Barrett is our best Fullback right now, the other prospects are Perofeta and Love.
I must be the only NZ supporter who really likes the look of Jordan on the wing. I'd love to see this back line

We need to think of the game as a 23 man game now. BB needs to come off the bench. You have teams second guessing themselves because of it move. Cause the players on tye field from the opposition will hold back cause they want to save energy for him which means our team can dominate them. Psychologically BB on the bench is a great benefit
Bb has been playing 10 majority of the season over in japan. Hes a 10 that can cover 15

All the spotlight is being put on Rieko, however i think the issue lies with Jordie.he is not the best distributing 12, and often goes dead with the ball. AWB should be our 12. Makes better post contact meters than Jordie and has better vision. Rieko and proctor will thrive with AWB at 12. Jordie can be on the bench which gives cover in multiple positions.
As a South African I would rather have DMac at 10 than Beaudan Barrett.
Yea, its just because barret has broken so many tackles and finished so many tries against the boks. My heart skips a beat when he starts running and breaks a first tackle 😅

Dominate the collision defensively and offensively. AB's need to impose themselves on any opponent particularly the forwars. This is their legacy.

Hope Reiko goes away and develops his game like Nonu did. There's definitely a lot of potential there to elevate and become one of the best 13s in the world.

You will get from Billy what you get from Rieko plus the natural midfield instincts in terms of his lines and distribution.
It’s like another version of rugby and then the Warriors trying to turn RTS into an inside back. The natural instinct isn’t there and we’re getting a 7/10 player when we could be getting an 8 or 9 if we played them at their natural position
Probably. But he has speed to crash and makes it to the gap before it closes. Just the fend is on another level. But still is a solid player

@matthewviliamu2679 yea, he does show good attacking speed and finishes well, receiving on set piece or supporting. We'll see in the next 4 year's but team naming should be solid for this first Argentina test.

Took too long to come to the obvious solution. A Jordie/Billy combo at the cake tin with Rieko on the wing. Sorry Jipper the bottom line is Rieko hasn’t performed his core centre role well. Not sure he has the guile required for such a pivotal position at International level. He had chances to put wingers in space against Eng but couldn’t do it with his running lines or passing. Time to test Billy (who is more in the Conrad Smith mould) against rush D. Also, I’m sure Will Jordan played at FB at some stage. He was a bit average from memory but he could be great.
