Okay I’ve been watching ATLA lately and I love the monster designs and the world is very interesting but I have a really hard time getting over the characters and dialogue... I get it’s a kid show but like maybe 1 in 10 jokes land and the rest are all groan inducing cliches or worn out character tropes they beat to death each episode. Also I find all of the main characters more annoying than endearing so far (I like Iroh tho). Anyway sorry for the rant just curious if I’m missing anything or if the later parts of the show improve on these things!

This is legit the way to learn quickly and effectively. It's taking the principles of drawing from a reference to understand a subject so you can learn the anatomy of the style. Do it enough times and it becomes ingrained in your skull. I literally do this every time I want to tackle unfamiliar mediums, styles, subjects... everything. Pissed off my friends by drawing galloping horse from scratch after a month of study.
I’ve been doing this breakdown and redraw technique for a while and never knew it was an actual thing, now that I’ve seen your video. It makes sense why I’ve been getting so much better. I’m glad that you gave me some more tips to add to my study techniques.

I did this exact type of practice with faces from the front a while ago. A very methodical approach. It is indeed a gamechanger. I made so much progress in a short time... It's true: you start to recognize your own mistake patterns. Damn, I need to start doing this again! Great video!
I've been following you for 2 months and my art has become way better thanks to your advices. Now I'm just doing redraws to train myself and, thanks to these three steps, I've done things I didn't know I was capable of. The only thing I still have difficulties with is flipping the drawing but I'm working on it

This is a few months late but I finished ATLA and Korra and have been gobbling up the comics and really enjoying the little like, extra bits they put in the comics about the process etc, and then I saw some of your art today on my IG feed, and was like, "wow, that looks straight out of avatar" and then I saw this video haha. so I first watched this vid because I wanted to try and recreate the style, which worked (in a way, still making improvements here and there) but I just want to say that applying the “breakdown” stage to normal art and breaking it down into shapes and measuring stuff out has improved my art a WHOLE LOT like seriously thank you for teaching me this ethan, I’ll make sure I subscribe after I finish writing this comment because you deserve it
I have a question about this particular exercise. I first learned of this from John Kricfalusi blog and found it has helped a lot. But how many times would you say to break down a single reference and fix the mistakes you make, or should you one and done it?
I would do it once, compare and fix any mixtakes, then move onto another reference, then once I went through a few more studies (over a couple of weeks) I would revisit the ones I felt the weakest with and redo them to see if I've improved with them.
I think it will be more useful to do it once per reference. So break a reference down, analyze mistakes, move onto the next reference with the info you gained from the previous breakdown.

I've been shown to do way wider anchor points like the one you drew over katara's nose during that first breakdown, but I've found I always struggle with giving my characters VERY flat faces. Fixating it on that one small spot over the bridge of the nose helps SO much in fixing that for me!! Thank you so much for your videos!
This is the best way to learn drawing anything. Tracing will only lead you to stagnation or draw the same stuff over and over. Understanding the layers allow to combine, sculpt among others. Practicing is just the toughest part but with strategy it's a piece of cake !
FYI - The shortcut for frame by frame on RUclips videos is the period key (forward frame) and comma key (backwards frame). Just make sure to pause the video first! Much easier than using the spacebar or manually rewinding references 👏🏽 Thanks for the great video!
The 10 second tid bit about the nose + mouth has DRASTICALLY helped me improve on facial expressions better than I ever have in years. Your advice is amazing, in even the littlest ways

Useful RUclips controls tip: Press the comma/left-carrot key (,/) on a paused video to move backwards and forwards by exactly 1 frame instead of mashing spacebar haphazardly and hoping you do it fast enough if you want to analyze frames. You can go frame by frame on youtube videos by using the < and > keys while the video is paused. Rather than slamming space bar.

I've been shown to do way wider anchor points like the one you drew over katara's nose during that first breakdown, but I've found I always struggle with giving my characters VERY flat faces. Fixating it on that one small spot over the bridge of the nose helps SO much in fixing that for me!! Thank you so much for your videos!

This is the best way to learn drawing anything.
Tracing will only lead you to stagnation or draw the same stuff over and over.
Understanding the layers allow to combine, sculpt among others.
Practicing is just the toughest part but with strategy it's a piece of cake !

FYI - The shortcut for frame by frame on RUclips videos is the period key (forward frame) and comma key (backwards frame). Just make sure to pause the video first! Much easier than using the spacebar or manually rewinding references 👏🏽 Thanks for the great video!

1:16 actually, I do have a breakdown every day. Just not drawing.
Useful RUclips controls tip: Press the comma/left-carrot key (,/) on a paused video to move backwards and forwards by exactly 1 frame instead of mashing spacebar haphazardly and hoping you do it fast enough if you want to analyze frames.
