Merv Hughes was my favourite cricketer of the late 1980s and early 90s.
He always gave 110 per cent for the Vics and Australia in the days when the Aussies were driven by passion.

Grew up in the 8ps watching test cricket and especially the fantastic Australia sides of that era destroying England on a regular basis . All the players Merv mentions were players you loved to hate but as an older maturer cricket fan you now realise how good they were!

One of the greatest blokes alive. Fearsome on the field, terrific off of it and a real honest fella.

Another one of those Aussies of that era who looked a nasty piece of work during play but was a much nicer guy off the field. Weird country.

Not just a weird country how many aboriginal sportsmen and women are they, how many aboriginal politicians are they totally marginalised, demonised treated like refugees in their own country and live in third world conditions. They call Australia the lucky country but lucky for who and the no vote tells you all you need to know how institutionally racist Australia still is Maoris in new Zealand are respected, and have a place in society Australia is a stolen country and always will be.

one of the funniest people I've ever met through friends
someone asked him about shaving his mullet....
Merv "well.....Simon O'Donnell, Tony Dodemaide & me had a bet about who would shave their hair"
    "what happened?"
Merv "I was the only moron to do it....O'Donnell had already lost his hair (due to the cancer her fought) & Dodemaide loves himself too much to change his hairstyle"

      I don't know much.
A number of years ago, Merv was in the N.T. when some bloke took an exception to him.
Merv's a big unit, but apparently that bloke faced Merv and lifted him off the ground by the shirt, and pinned Merv against the wall.

Crash hands over the title "Legend" to everyone. More than half the guys he interviews are "less than average" or "average" players; a thousand miles removed from any Legend-hood. I would like to remind him that there are extraordinary cricketers in other countries too who are almost legends. Did he ever bother to talk to Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev et al from India? I see only Harsha Bhogle who is more of a writer/journalist/commentator than player. It is also annoying to see him fawning over Aussie cricketers with those artificial laughs….
