    Please excuse the somewhat compromised nature of this video, a delayed flight into Geneva left very little time to get it done. The result was a rattly camera mount, no outside shots and little opportunity to give the car a proper drive. I wasn't going to upload but looking through the footage again, there seemed to be just enough info to make it worth putting out.

    My parents had a V8 Land Rover in the early 80s, didn’t look anything like this though, old style dash, sliding windows, doors that sort of kept the water out, a rear door that didn’t like to stay shut. Loved it.

      I had an ‘89 version we all loved it I bought it of eBay for 2k kept it for 4 years and sold it for 5k

    What a GREAT review - as always of course, Harry. Really good to see your happy smile and enthusiasm as always, even when limited on Swiss roads! That lovely sounding V8, and that great trans, with SVO's chassis work, sounds like a good combination. Many thanks Harry. Shame most of the 150 will spend their time as an investment, not on the road or the trail. Perhaps you drove the I-Pace around the airport carpark they had set out for the press at Geneva, and you'll give us your impressions of that soon, as well!

    Love to see JLR recognizing its glorious (if often tumultuous) past. Certainly this is the Defender that Land Rover always wanted to make. Both Jaguar and Land Rover have made aggressive steps lately to stay current and modern while still paying homage to their own histories. No better person to cover this than Mr.Metcalf (should be Sir Metcalf) who himself always does a wonderful job of giving us videos that balance past, present, and future. I'd love to put this in the garage next to the original Beluga Black Defender. Thanks Harry! Cheers Mate!

    I’m building about as close as you can get to this without the 150 grand price tag. GM 5.3 V8 (300BHP), 6-speed automatic, Puma dash, and a few nice extras such as air conditioning. It’ll be nice, but not as nice as this one!

    The engine reminds me a lot of BMW's S62 V8 from the E39 M5 and the Z8. Displacement is similar, hp/torque is similar, the sound is similar; if it had a manual. I'd say those cars were very kindred spirits, each with a very different purpose, but a similar V8 heart.

  • @PipeOPhile
    @PipeOPhile 6 лет назад +37

    For everyone making comments about the price - it's a toy car! No one buying these sorts of cars is doing it because it's rational, they're doing it for a giggle. And a V8 Defender is certainly a giggle.

    Hello from Geneva! Harry I can't believe you drove right past my apartment, I would have lost my mind if I saw you. Traffic around the Geneva airport area is terrible when the car show is on. I fell in love with V8 engines thanks to a classic Defender 110 V8, the one with the 3.5-litre Rover V8. As a kid it felt like the fastest thing in the world, but when I grew up I found out it only had 135hp. Still, my love affair with V8 engines began. I hope you get to do a proper review, I can only imagine what it feels like with three times more power. The price is a bit ridiculous, but it seems like a really fun car.

    Did an advert for the Land Rover V8 back in the 80s, we were preparing the 2CVs for the Bond Film. Drove up from Pinewood to Cupar in Scotland to meet a circus towing an ex AA car recovery trailer. The Land Rover did not turn up?? So an elephant was walked onto the trailer and photo taken with the photographers Range Rover hooked up. Later the Range Rover was photo shopped for the Land Rover. The add came out in the Sunday Times once.
    It was a nice little earner, even better several Range Rover adds followed.

    it sounds like its got your project 8 engine under the hood, also couldnt you get the spanners out and cut the spokes down, and then retrim the wheel while leaving the airbag intact? or even retrofit it with a citroen steering wheel, as it looks like something you'd find on an SM. except oversized, Final option, a project 7 steering wheel on it. as you must have a spare prototype wheel or two lying around from when you bought the first one.

I’m wondering if the pay scale is raised that much to cover or if only the rich can own nice things over there. Farmers here are not rich by any means so Harry must have had something set up before hand to afford his awesome home and garage. I’m glad he shares the experiences bc he is tops.

    Love it. I want one. Unfortunately I live in the States. Which it isn’t being imported to the States.

    Nice review. Right at the end of the line, Land Rover release the vehicle people always wanted. I just need someone else to buy one so that I can drive it in the desert in Dubai.

    Wouldn’t you rather a twisted v8 potentially with all the squeaks and rattled sorted ?? For 2/3s of the price?
