Woodturning Olive Wood Logs into a Unique Saucer Bowl

- I have had these Olive wood logs for a while now and have been saving them for something special. This is an amazing wood to turn. Besides for the stunning wood grain, it smells very pleasant and is a joy to work with. A few weeks back my friend Mike Holton posted a video of a bowl he made from Jarrah Burl wood and resin. I loved the shape and just couldn’t get it out of my head when thinking of what to make next. So I asked Mike if he would be okay with me attempting a similar design. He said he would be honored. This is probably my favorite piece I’ve made to date. I really like the unique shape and the contrasting colors of the wood and resin. Unfortunately it is difficult to capture the true beauty of this piece on camera. The resin looks very dark but is actually quite translucent in person. Thank you very much for letting me borrow your design Mike. Much appreciated. And thank you so much for watching. If you are interested in watching Mikes video I will leave a link below. I hope you have a wonderful day.

My Favorite so far. The olive wood is stunning and the epoxy is great. It has a slight UFO vibe--very cool. Maybe in the future you can use metal gray epoxy for the body of a UFO shape then the lid could be a translucent dome. That would be the coolest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Barry. You and my son had the same thought. He wanted me to make a little dome lid and put an “alien” figure inside it. Appreciate the positive feedback as always sir. It is very appreciated. I hope you have a great day.

NICE!
Beautiful. Olive wood is one of my favorites. And that epoxy color is just spectacular. I really need to find some classes in my area. I have a thousand ideas in my head .
Meh. You don’t need classes. Just go to RUclips university. There are some amazing instructional style channels out there. I’ve only been doing this for seven months and have taken no classes. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s called learning. Just stay safe. You can do it! Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
Great work as always. Now you need a matching cow to go with it 😀
Good idea!! Thanks man. Appreciate it as always. Hope you have a great day.

Beautiful work Scott! Absolutely love it!!!!!!
Thank you Mike. I’m glad you liked it. Now that I’ve made it I can move on and see other shapes in pieces I’m going to make. Just couldn’t get this one out of my head. Thanks again for everything. Hope you have a great day sir.

@@squareandlevel Never a problem my friend. I know just what it's like to get an idea lodged and you just need to do it!
❤❤
Exquisite.
Outstanding looking piece of work, terrific shape with the wide outer rim so you see more of the wood if something is in the bowl. I also use the rice method to calculate how much resin. Didn’t you have a video posted on your finishing process ? I think you brush it with epoxy and wet sand in between coats ? I may be mistaken or the process is in a build video. Have a great day 👍
Thanks. I prefer using math to calculate the volume needed, but irregular shaped pieces like this make that difficult. I should have known better and added more to my fudge factor. Lesson learned. I have commented on my finishing process in a previous video, but honestly it is still evolving as I try new things and learn. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

I really enjoy your work. You seem so happy when things work well.

I think so too! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Hermosa pieza!!!!! Felicitaciones!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool job
Very beautiful, good job. Thank God your chisels aren’t very sharp. Be safe my friend.
Really lovely finish to a wonderful project I prefer your take on mike's bowl his was good but I think I like yours is better in part because olive is my favourite wood to turn not taking any thing away from mike holton who is a favourite of mine I just think the olive took it look forward to your next video
Thanks Jamie
Thank you Jamie. I really like turning olive wood as well. It’s the smell for me. Smells fantastic. Unfortunately it’s a little difficult for me to get. I have two pieces left that I’ll save for something good. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
@@squareandlevel that's a shame I can get my hands on olive quite often the only trouble for you is I am in England and it's not a cheep wood I look forward to seeing you use the rest of the olive you have Scott
Cheers Jamie
ПРЕКРАСНАЯ РАБОТА. ОТЛИЧНО !
👍👍❤❤
Very nice work, thanks for sharing this! You might have saved some epoxy by inserting sort of a wooden semi-circle in the center where were you were going to hollow out later ;-)
Thank you. I understand I could save a small amount of resin by doing what you suggest, but then it would limit the options once turning begins. I have tried this in the past and told myself the resin saved wasn’t worth limiting the design options. Truly appreciate the feedback. I hope you have a great day.

Love your videos...I'm a brand new turner. What do you use to seal your bowls and things you make that will contain food and drink? Thank you for what you do! Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much. ( I’m pretty new to turning as well. Roughly 6 months). As far as food safe finishes go I would recommend to do some research. It’s a debated topic and no matter what I say there will be someone who says I’m wrong. That said, I would recommend raw linseed oil or walnut oil followed up with beeswax. They are good option and I personally prefer the natural look and feel they give to the piece. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Amazing work, can i ask what did u use for the finish ?

Is there anything that Jim Carrey can't do well?

First, let me say your wood working skills are really great ! Now, in my opinion you should of left stumps alone after epoxying them, they were pretty, colors nice... all that epoxy to cut it down to a frigging bowl !? What a waste of time and energy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
