Parabolic Satellite Dish Conversion - Solar Cooker

- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- Two proven DIY methods for converting an old offset parabolic satellite dish into a solar cooker! These are two different satellite dishes I converted for solar cooking...one satellite dish was sanded and polished, and the other satellite dish is made using reflective vinyl strips. Please note, this experiment wasn't about cooking speed, but how to utilize free solar energy. This design was made to slow cook food like a sous vide cooker, or crockpot...not to create a full boil...as slow-cooked foods can taste better! Sanding and polishing a parabolic dish takes much longer but is more permanent. For the first dish, I wanted to sand and polish to as close to a mirror finish as the metal would allow. For the second dish, I lightly sanded, then added a light coat of paint to smooth out the surface, and used vinyl strips. Using the reflective vinyl strips is faster but they require replacing over time. Some metals polish better than others, and some dishes benefit more from the strips. Hope this video helps to show you how! Solar cooking can help reduce deforestation, soil erosion, and even pasteurize water where there’s a limited supply. And it's FUN!
I've tried the same thing 6 years ago and found that you really do not need the paint striper and create all that hard work and used all dhoose chemicals and tool. All you really need is a reel of aluminium tape to cover the dish with. The results are identical and achievable in max 10 minutes. No polishing needed. No holes need covering as the tape will cover them anyway. After all not the look of the dish is important but the functionality.
It just depends on the dish. Some have more orange peel than others. Some need it, some don't. I wanted to show how to deal with the ones that do have orange peel. I used the bolt holes to mount to the dish stand, then covered the bolt heads with reflective tape.

Perfect!... Now I know what to do with the 2 satellite dishes left on my house from the previous owners! After we bought the house I called the satellite company to see if they wanted to come and take them back they declined and I was like "whatever"! But I have had these two eyesores sitting on my roof for more than 2 yrs and didn't know what to do with them... now I do!
Thanks man!
..Oh. .lucky you!...So, three years have passed...Did you really make 2 parabolic solar cookers by yourself or they're still sitting on your roof just as before?...Let us know... . 😊
Maalala ko ang module na ito nung High School (1984) pa kami. Ito yung dream project ng aking High School Science Teacher Mr. Leongson. Di man namin nagawa pero ngayon naging realidad na na nagawa ng mga mapagsaliksik na iba. Congrats!
Your level of nuance and double entendre is off the charts. Well played.
Just a couple of suggestions, and I totally agree that protective eye wear be used..First suggestion is to have the parabolic angled so that the refraction and collection points up to the underside of the cooking vessel.. like a burner contact point with any pot of pan.. Most of your better quality cookwear have that thick plate to act as a buffer..The second which goes towards eye safety.. You can protect your eye sight by simply slipping a cardboard or other firm surfaced object over the lens before you do any cooking activity like stirring, serving, or adding ingredients..I do agree with the more extreme light filtering eye wear... but stumbling around blinded or nearly blind has its hazards as well. This was one of the reasons I suggest pointing the refraction and collection points up and using a light blocking material covering the lens
Kevin Rehberg - I was thinking the same thing. These “Offset” parabolic dishes can be turned upside down, placed UNDER an elevated pan/pot, so they bounce light upward. Diagram here (not my page): watkin-online.com/openpage.html
A great idea, I have been thinking of trying this for some time. A friend of mine was in the Himalayas a while back and noticed that many of the locals used folding solar cookers as the rhododendron forests that used to be their firewood source were depleted years ago. Even when traveling they take a cooker with them to brew up tea and cook on the trail.
Yeah you're right brother as I'm from India and here these kind of things are used on large scale.

The internet satellite dishes were all fiberglass both regular and commercial from after 2000 - so the only option is coating them with aluminum. Heavy duty freezer foil is available in 18 inch widths and also can be put on.
Mine are 3 foot and steel new and free with mounts
I've honestly never thought of this genius idea. I've used the bottom of an aluminum pop can to light a fire before but never thought of using a larger version to cook with
Polished soda cans make good solar cigaret lighters. Solar dishes you can easily cook with or use to light your bbq. But trust me get a mylar emergency blanket and some spray adhesive. And smoothe on that mirror like mylar and you got a wicked hot solar blazer!!!!
What if we use foil paper?
5:03 Hey.. yyou! So cute. Must have smelled the food and knew what was coming. Yum yum.
came here for making parabolic mirror, left with a parabolic mirror and a stripper. Thanks Alan! I dont quite know how the second one is needed for the construction, but im not complaining.
I thought you were converting a cooker to a satellite dish because I always look at my wok and wonder if it would work. The way you focussed the sun to the pot is also a good method of LNB positioning for best signal on your dish.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU. KEEP GOOD WORK FOR EVER. KEEP YOURSELF AWAY FROM GREEDY AND SELFISH PEOPLE. AGAIN GOD BLESS YOU.
I saw a video where a guy made one of these and stored it in his dad's shop, and just the light through a crack in the wall was enough to burn the shop down.
Also, contrary to popular misconception, it doesn't need to be perfectly smooth. Mirror-like, yes. But the tape doesn't need to overlap. In fact, I've use aluminum foil just mashed into a dish sprayed with 3M adhesive. It's smooth enough for cooking and took all of 3 minutes.
Foil works fine for reflectivity but it often needs replacement as its not as durable. Cutting into strips helps reduce wrinkles, which does indeed raise the reflectivity ratio. This is why a mirror is so much more reflective than tape, because of the perfect smoothness/polish.
Add a ring and locate it at the focus point. The ring will be suspend the casserole without contact of any surface. The result will be a fast heat transfer to the bottom of the casserole metal.
Wow this is so cool! The next time you make one, I would try to just go over the holes in the dish with a skim coat of spackle, let dry then sand. Should give you that perfect mirror finish.
If I didn't use the bolt holes to attach to the base I certainly would.
My calculator nearly caught fire through reflective sun ray. Our fish bowl which is was placed on our dining table near our french doors reflected the sun ray to our calculator which was placed on our console table across the room. The sun was shining right on to our fish bowl through our full glass back doors. We could smell a plastic burning smell in the room. After chasing the smell , it was our calculator slowly burning. If we weren't at home that day, no doubt we would have come back to a burning house. The crazy thing is, no one would have know what had caused it.
..Oh HELL!!!....No wayyyy!!!! 😱
I like the video. I made a similar dish years ago and got a mirror finish by hand and then it rusted so I had to put a coating on it. Very nice. My dish is under greenenergyconcepts .

So many practical uses for this...Well DONE..energy applications too🤗
The fresnel lenses just take light that would have shined on the pot, reflect a little bit of it, and concentrate the transmitted light to a small point. They don't actually increase the light shining on the pot.
Damn it man, great video. Will do this my self. Thank you for your time and infinite wisdom.
This is very awesome! Can't wait to build my own solar cooker!
How long does it take to cook food?
Very nice inventiveness. Got an unused one on the side of the house.
Nice ... I'm planning to do the same thing... The stripper I used had been around a while, but still got the job done. It took several light applications to keep it wet enough to finally strip to the naked surface.
I don't think it will really cook foods.
Lol I need to go wash my mind.
Mesmo o sol pode ajudar a reduzir o aumento da temperatura no planeta
@Lito Flores It does indeed cook foods and this video is just one of many on RUclips that proves it can be done. It's simply a slow cooker process instead of a fast process. This design was not about cooking speed...its about using free energy. However, if you want speed...simply use a large fresnel lens.
i wonder why the governmentss do not have programs set out using this tech to heat houses . i am on disability and heat the house using electricity and know for a fact that using the suns power would save tax money that could be used in better ways . same goes for people that heat the house using natural gas . my thoughts on this is that the governmentss own all the power stations and would not get to keep the majority of money for themselves so that they can have the easy life . same goes for the banks , its my belief that the governmentss are the main share holders , people that save money in the banks are getting jipped , they borrow your money with high interest out to others and keep the majority of it for themselves . if you ask to borrow money from them you have to pay high interest and yet most people are willing to just give the banks money with basically no return investment .

Comin around to the sound 🏄♂️🚀
Good job! I am doing mine with chrome paint. Will give me a chrome finish that will rival the polished metal and not get overheated as the vinyl will.
Good luck! Show us how it went.
The dish itself shouldn't ever overheat. It's the parabolic focus point concentrating the sun's energy from whatever size reflector that gets hot (just like with a fresnel). A larger parabola only makes more heat at focal point because it's size collects more of the sun. How did your painted dish do? I'm tinkering with a few designs, and foil tape, sanded/polished bare metal, chrome paint are all I'm considering for a recycled television dish cooker.
The innuendo is strong with this one
No need to strip it too much work! Spray some adhesive on it then rub on some mylar/ emergency blanket! In 5 minutes your done and getting temps up to 750 degrees!
Note to self... Works a LOT better on a small, black cast iron cauldron suspended from a tripod via a chain than on a stainless steel pot, even one with a darkened exterior.
As long as the exterior is black, that what counts. That's why I focus the beam on the side or bottom of the black pot instead of the stainless lid. Cast iron's heavy mass takes a very long time to heat up whereas a thinner black pot will begin to transfer the heat faster. This is why most retail solar cooker products that come with a pot are the thin-walled type, like a Granite Wear pot, or similar. I do think the hanging chain technique is good as long as the chain/tripod isn't blocking the sun's rays.
Lol those puns you used in this video 😂😂😂👍👍
Very interesting idea. A hug from Itaperuna, RJ, Brazil
The HVAC tape I used for various projects like unto this, I found can be further polished with metal polish like Mother's or MacGuire's to add another level of luster and reflectivity...we Harley riders know about polish...!

I'm wondering about the amount of innuendo necessary to get full value from the professional stripper?
It would be much more interesting if there was a professional stripper strutting her stuff around a shiny dish instead of a shiny pole for a change! Not that I visit strip joints you understand, I just heard that this sort of thing happens in some places apparently!
14 micron thick aluminum foil will work fine just make sure it spread without any wrinkles. Good job bro
Yeah the wrinkles part is the crux. Very hard to accomplish without using a bit of parabolic math and a razor to cut the strips properly. Also, the foil is not as durable in the long run vs material cost is an issue. Lots of ways to accomplish the end result, but people have to decide which fits their application best.

Why don't we use this method for power plant by producing steam
Through sea water.
Method is used extensively to produce power. Just search and you shall find.
The United states government, people in the gov. and corporations, people in the Corp, still believe the economy and their wealth depends on petroleum. And it's going to be some real serious earth changes and natural destruction before good ideas to harness energy become mainstream. You can run hundreds of miles per gallon on gasoline vapors. You can run like I did for thousands and thousands of miles on used cooking oil or used motor or transmission oil in a diesel engine vehicle. Tesla had many free energy ideas the us Gov. Through FBI agents locked away upon his death. Stanley Meyers discovered the resonance of water and someone killed him over it. Water molecules have more energy locked in them than any substance known to man between the strength of the bond to the expansion of the gas to the energy of combustion in hydrogen and oxygen.
Here is a similar idea being used in SE California to turn water to steam. However, I don't think it's seawater.

mr safety says "cover when not in use" you could inadvertently start a fire
@@Nayo68 did you use the mirror tape or have you polished the disc?
I have done that, covered one with mylar (chip packets) and then left it in the shed and when the sun angle came down in winter all of a sudden it was catching some and set an old leather couch on fire. These are dangerous, and exactly why BYU came up with the solar funnel concept to replace parabolic dishes - these had been given as aid to displace dung burning and setting houses alight when stored poorly.
Here is an idea from another RUclipsr for making mirrors cheaply and efficiently, "How To Make Parabolic Mirrors From Space Blankets - 'NightHawkInLight'". You may protect a mirror like this from the elements by creating a top covering using a similar methodology I think.

Hey Fatima
Hii Alan, awesome video and very good Idea !!
Have you tried keeping the dish just beneath the soup pot? I think it will be more efficient way to heat the soup from the bottom instead of from a side.
Awesome invention
Save yourself a ton of elbow fatigue and spray some spray adhesive to the inside of the dish, then spray the dark side of a Mylar emergency blanket 2-3 bucks at Walmart, Mylar won’t absorb much energy and is super reflective
It should still be sanded because the adhesive will cause the Mylar to 'orange peel' like paint will on an unsanded surface and will be drastically reduced in efficiency.
Damn that's some old 70's stripper music!

Correct. Tried the same with simple aluminium foil coated tape. Had way more efficiency without any form of polishing - just stick it carefully. (What he did in the end).
Your pot while still black, has a shine to it, which means its still reflecting alot of energy away, i would coat it with black grill paint. Or at least sand it dull. That is if its not just painted stainless steel. Cast iron is best though cause its dull dark and holds in the heat very well

@@erwinconxepts i meant to say partial heating , can you imagine heating stones using such a powerful device . stones can hold heat for a lengthy time thus helping reduce the use of other costly methods .
There are some places where government is helping people to use solar energy. In México before the current government entered last december 1st there was a huge impulse towards solar water heaters, even going as far as government giving away solar water heaters to hundreds of thousands of families but the new government is against green technologies so that program is dead right now.
In Baja the state government worked with US companies to install eolic generators, they can feed a small town with no problem whatsoever (200,000-300,000 people) but the new president when he saw the generators ranted about that and called them "eotic ventilators" (he is quite an imbecile), and he is pushing for more production of oil and to generate more power by burning oil and its derivates... he is basically doing the same things a president did in 1970, step by step, old people living in the past can be dangerous when they are in the government :-/
You would consider solid to liquid insulated material to hold heat for the night.

Instead of using the tape, you could use highly reflective silver paint. Like Alclad metallic paint used in scale modelling. These give a very, very high reflective metal like coating.
Alclad or Kosutte GinSan would be pretty expensive for a large dish, and not very durable, unfortunately. It's pretty toxic to breathe.

Harnessing solar energy for heat such as cooking requires designing a solar receiving system to optimize energy use.
Bravo Alan 👏
Another method is to stick small mirrors (mosaic)on the dish
man, you have not seen the forest because of the trees. the shade of the saucepan occupies 20% of the surface of the mirror. the rays reflected from the mirror must be deflected.
I didn't want full power on the pot once it cooked because I was wanting a slow-cooked stew, similar to a crockpot.
Alan Howell - I see, you we’re going for lower power. Maybe you could use some other shadow method. Drape a towel on part of the dish?
As Cornel was pointing out, these types of dishes are “offset” and thus, for 100% power, the shadow of the cook pot should NOT be cast on the dish (shadow blocks a portion of the rays). Normally these dishes are installed with the focus point (collector) well below the dish’s apparent “aim”.
So, if you turn the dish upside down, and place the dish UNDER the elevated cook pot, the dish should bounce the light UP to the bottom of the pot. Good for frying pans, because light would heat the bottom of the pan. (Again, avoid the shadow on the dish.) See diagram here: watkin-online.com/openpage.html
Great video. I learned a lot from it. Thanks for all your fine work (sandpaper humor).
