      Albion Laster Tony's Wife didn't call.... The conversation would have gone something like this.... Tony: "Honey I found a satellite dish, it would be perfect for showing the kids how parabolic dishes can focus light" Wife: "If you bring home one more piece of trash I am chaining you to the Oxy bottle".... (sound of slamming phone)

    When my daughter asked to try coffee my wife asked what I thought. I assumed that, like most kids, she would try it, spew it and that would be the last I would hear of it for years.
    What I hadn't counted on was the fact that my wife's coffee is basically a milkshake with a dash of espresso in it. I said yes, and now she's hooked.

    I once worked, as an Engineer, on a project evaluating various solar heated and cookery homes and buildings and buildings. With data to back it up. First, the so-called "solar constant" is not constant. It depends on your latitude. Good luck with solar cooking in McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic Winter. Here in Alaska it is more like 250 W/M^2 in summer and zero In the in the winter. On the other hand in Hawaii it could be a winner. Our prize site was a Chinese laundry somewhere in Oahu -- almost 100% solar fraction. And solar does not scale. Because it goes by W/M^2, or BTU/ft^2 if you prefer, you need an enormous amount of ft^2. Still, as a science project, excellent stuff. And a very good use for a discarded TV antenna.

    TV sats are not geosynchronous. They are geostationary, they go with the wobble of the earth to have a fixed point in space. Geosynchronous sats have a 24 hour 'period' (the time it takes to make a full rotation around the earth), however they make more of a figure 8 pattern. That's why some recievers have motors to follow them along the figure 8 pattern.
    I just got done teaching a class about this last week. Nerd rant over. Awesome project!
    Sincerely,
    A Space Nerd

    • @cdorcey1735
      @cdorcey1735 5 лет назад

      SpaceNerd - better double check your lecture notes. Geostationary is a special case of geosynchronous. A geosynchronous orbit is merely synchronized in some way with the rotation of the earth, so it can be tilted and/or elliptical, as long as the period is 24 hours (or even an integer fraction thereof). When a geosynchronous orbit has zero inclination and zero eccentricity, it's geostationary.

    🤔 So now you made me wonder...
    Would a dish that big, allow for an emergency (mylar kind) blanket to be "bonded" to the dish surface, (to make it seamless)?
    On some deployments we used a collapsing box that was very, very similar in results; and easy to repair after "sudden sand storms" just a thougt.

    When we were kids my friends and I "found" a few "old" dishes and did something similar with contact adhesive spray and heavy tin foil with the idea of making long distance solar communication devices... we divided into three groups of three to five of us lil bastards and took our inventions and hiked to the tops of of the opposing mountains that make the valley our lil town lives in... we got to our opposing cliffs and hung them in trees to start signaling and it's was great buuut we didn't have a signalling code so we left our lil inventions hanging and ran down into town to come up with a "signal code" we did but it it was getting dark and we all had to go home... the next day we planned to go and play with them but it was cloudy and rainy for a few days and pretty much forgot all about them and found something else to do.... The following week was a very very bad week for our town it was sunny clear and in the 90s and put 2 and 2 together and we ended up.with 3 sun lasers that caused random infernos all over town it was scary sad and stupid there was a huge manhunt for the "village arson" until our lil inventions were found after pure havoc and damage was caused, we owned up to it took our parental beatings and did our community service and helped build new fences, barns, garages and one church (which we had to mow ) until we turned 21. but good news nobody hurt no homes lost and we didn't get in serious trouble. Bottom line if your lil bastards wanna stay out a lil longer it may be a good idea to let them who knows what they were up to, it just might save the town

      This is entertaining, but nonsense. The solar energy from a dish is focused into a cone, with the hot spot just a few feet from the dish, where the feedhorn usually is (like Tony's coffee pot). A few feet father away, it's dispersed into normal sunshine. You might start a brush fire near the dish, but no farther away than that.
      For solar communication, you'd be better off with flat mirrors, just for that reason. Parallel rays from the sun, reflected from a flat mirror, remain parallel, and would be visible for miles. See "heliograph" on Wikipedia.

    If you apply black mate painting to the surface of object in focal zone you'll absorb more solar energy.

    Painting the bottom part of the coffee cooker should work much better. I want a solar cooker, too!
