Rice & Brown were both way beyond their prime at the time, lol. And if you remember, Gannon was known for not being able to throw a ball 20 yards without it looking like a duck. I watched that whole season & he was mostly checking the ball short to receivers, TE & RBs and the Raiders lived off YAC. The fact that Rice & Brown even had that season is amazing. Not arguing for or against any point. Just thinking about how absurd that season was for them. Gruden was a GREAT coach.
When Rice left the 49ers after the 2000 season, people said he was ‘washed up’. Rice went to the Raiders and put up back to back 1000 receiving seasons and made 2 pro bowls with Rich Gannon throwing him the ball. Rich Gannon won MVP in 2002, Rice at his age of 40 was as dominant in 2001-2002 as he was in 1991-1992. Best ever, the best ever.
No one is gonna catch rice cause NFL receivers burn out quicker and get injured more cause they're heavier and more athletic so they tear acls and break bones more. Also teams replace receivers more than ever, No one is catching rice.

The story I'll remember most about Jerry Rice is when he blew his knee out in his mid-30s, for most receivers they aren't even relevant at that point anymore but Rice was still at the top of his game. A few months later Jerry's wife says she hears this crazy sound coming from the garage and goes in there and sees Jerry literally sawing the cast off of his own leg. He comes back from a torn ACL in the same season he tore it, ends up catching a game-winning TD and gets hit on the play, breaking his kneecap on the same knee, so he was done again. But I mean if that story doesn't get the hair on your neck up, I don't know what will. The guy was a competitor on a scary level.
Exactly. Not to mention it was unheard of @the time for an athlete to come back and play at a high level, let alone during the same season, from an acl (and mcl) injury.
While that was very impressive I have to admit, it was very foolish of him to rush back that fast. Rice should have waited until the playoffs to come back because that's when the 49ers needed him most. He would have most likely made a difference in that Packers game had he played in it. Would they have won? Who knows, but they would have stood a better chance at least.
Story goes that his dad was a brick layer and he would help his dad on projects. His dad would throw down bricks to him and Jerry would have to catch them. Hands of steel.

Your points are quite accurate. Naming the greatest, QB, LB, RB, etc., seem to always be up for debate. As far as the WR position goes, there is no debate. Just look at the career numbers....... Randy Moss : receptions 982 receiving yards 15,292 receiving TD's: 156 punt return TD's: 1 = 157 total TD's Terrell Owens : receptions 1078 receiving yards 15,934 receiving TD's: 153. The gloves of today are far superior in grip to those players using Stickum. That famous OBJ catch is absolutely impossible without the insane grip of modern gloves.
A guy unanimously recognized as having the best off-field preparation and work ethic of ALL TIME and a couple idiots want to reduce him to "stick em" SMH.
It’s not unanimous that he had the best work ethic of all time. The real number one guy Walter Payton could def argue with him on work ethic. Walter never ran out of bounds because he felt like that was quitting on a play. I saw Jerry rice run out of bounds a lot to avoid a hit
So then you agree that Tom Brady is the GOAT of QBs then? Don't you dare mention deflate or spy gate if you aren't going to talk stickum with Jerry Rice
He was consistently great and at times unworldly for 20 yrs. Also played his best in huge games. He shined where other players in playoffs shtunk... talking about Randy Moss
Dratix Gaming you do realize he only used it in the beginning of his career right? Do me a favor and look if you see stickum on his hands? No. But yet people praise Lester Hayes and Fred bilknikof who covered them self’s in it. You just wanna find a reason to hate the greatest cause it’s not your team.
The greatest athlete in any sport I have ever seen in person. Period. How lucky I was that my family had Niners season tickets that I saw nearly every record setting moment this man made. The GOAT then, now and forever!
I was lucky enough to have been born in 1972 , be a teenager in the 80s and witness without a doubt some of the greatest men in sports ever, Tyson, Bo, Montana, Rice, and the list just keeps going. I'm so so thankful and lucky for the time and era that I was able to be a kid and teenager in!!
Brayden Baumann I was thinking the same thing. Or even Steve Young. And I’m sure it didn’t hurt Rice’s career to play with 2 HOF quarterbacks too, but he’s a good #1 choice.
This guy made completions and scored touchdowns as if everyone else watching him was just relaxing, listening to classical music. I don't think anyone else is ever going to get remotely close to pure art in football like this guy did.
I saw a interview Rice years ago. He contributed his performances to the fact he hated being tackled. He said he would avoid being tackled at all cost.
Greatest receiver. Greatest football player ever to lace up cleats. His perfect technique, unparalleled work ethic and insane stamina set him apart. As far apart from his peers as the sun and the moon. Like Walter Payton, his workouts were so otherworldly that a trained tri-athlete would vomit on their shoes. Receiver is probably the greatest "DIVA" position in sports. Yet, even those Prima Donnas give Jerry Rice the nod as "THE GOAT" There is simply no one to compare to him, because no player so completely devoted himself to his craft. A maestro in pads. A Houdini in cleats. The greatest of all time. Past and future tense. The GOAT of all receivers. The undisputed GOAT of all NFL players.
Beyond the numbers, beyond the highlights, Jerry Rice had admiration from his peers like no other. At the Pro Bowl, after mandatory practices, other players would literally stand/sit around and _watch_ Jerry Rice work out. These are the best players in the league, and they're loafing around admiring him put in the extra work.
Another thing people don't bring up about Jerry is how CLUTCH he is. Probably the most Clutch wide receiver I've ever seen since I began watching football. He WANTED the bright lights and biggest game to play in. Alot of players can't handle that pressure. Rice licked his chops at it.
Without a doubt the greatest receiver EVER! The greatest football player of all-time! The best after the catch! The best work ethic! What else can you say about this guy. 22 1000 yard seasons is insane. He made BOTH Montana and Young great.
it’s because jim brown didn’t play in the super bowl era, he would’ve won 9 super bowls if they were around all 100 seasons, Jim Brown is the most impactful player ever tho, rice and brown are close for best.
@@brooks5713Agreed it’s a toss up between them 2. Accomplishments, impact, stats, dominance, work ethic, skills, they had it all. They both set the standard for their position and it’s never changed.
I always thought Jerry Rice was #1 because of his consistency as a WR. I never felt he was as athleticly-gifted as let's say someone like Moss or TO, but it seriously felt like he never dropped the ball. Even with the tightest coverage this guy just finds a way to catch that football, he made it look so easy. He was always a significant factor in every game due to his stamina, I can't remember him looking fatigued ever. He is a class act and is deservedly #1.
Boston Thomas Yes in his rookie yr he dropped plenty of passes in which he was wide open once he started working during the off season history was made!!!!
He was a smart hard working guy with good hands, but he was also a good route runner. Look how many passes he catches in full stride. Very little stopping, turning or jumping to get the ball.
I am so thankful to have watched this man play the game. Nobody has to tell me about it. That single hand catch without losing his step, and still out ran a man that was ahead of him. I was amazed!
You guys are all not mentioning Rice's longevity... Jerry's was not a freak of nature like Moss, making Moss have an edge over rice but rice consistency is why he is number 1 and his attitude. Jerry was not pompous like Moss!!
+Zentacus K.... deacon Jones used to slap people in the head as his signature pass rush Move so does that make him not great anymore because there is now a now a rule against that or???
+obi njoku Moss, he had pure athleticism. But Jerry, the GOAT, knew how to play football like a god. With perfect routes, the intelligence to predict tackles or jukes, and studying the defense. Moss used his speed, size, and athleticism. Jerry, was a pure football player. Well said though. And, I gotta admit he played a HELL OF A LONG TIME. But that also that longevity, it means that he's different from the others. Most WR's retire near 30. This man, who had to run all day and catch the ball played til' he was over 40 years old.
Even to this day, and even though most people these days like to forget it, he's still the best player the NFL ever had. No one ever worked harder, achieved more, dominated their position harder, or will be in the NFL record books longer than Jerry Rice.
for all the haters out there rice played for 20years and most of his catches and touchdowns where from short catches and he has good stamina and consistency

the best to ever play and I watched him play. I saw him play season 9 to the final season 20. I saw him life in two of his four Super bowls. His third Superbowl win vs San Diego was amazing. he had 10 catches, 150 yards and 3 touchdowns and only played 3 quarters and 75 seconds of the fourth quarter. He was taken when the niners took a 49-18 lead with 13:45 left in the game.
Jerry Rice has as many TD catches in 4 Super Bowls, as Julio Jones had in 2015 when he started all 16 games and led the league in receptions and yards. 😳
@@mugishagabriel6074 Dude Brady is not really in the conversation. It has been Rice or Jim Brown for the last 50 years. Brady is still being debated with Montana for greatest QB because of how pass-friendly the game is now. Like Gruden said, Rice is the most dominant player ever.
Notice how the goats are the ones with the strongest mentality and composure, and the second best are the ones with the most freakish athletic abilities.
When I first saw a lot of Jerry rice film, even as a born and raised niners fan, I was like, "these are all just open catches, right? I'm not seeing him hitting any nasty contested ones, or crazy one-handers." Then I realized. THAT'S why he's the GOAT. The dude was IMPOSSIBLE to fully cover. He ran routes SO WELL, had such SURE hands, that it just looked easy. He always had a way of getting himself open. It's like, you can have randy moss skying over someone to catch it. Or, Jerry runs the perfect route for a five-yard slant and takes it to the house, no one touching him
There is a story I heard on how Jerry Rice developed such perfect catching hands. At an early age he worked with his father who was a brick layer building brick walls. While working they would throw the bricks up the scaffolding to each other. The story is that Jerry could catch eight bricks at a time. Now doesn't that tell all!
All praise deserved. And, let's take a second to remember John Taylor and all the other players on that offense that threw crushing blocks to turn 10 yards into 50. Props.
Rice and Walter Payton remind me so much of each other. Both were small school guys. Not great measurables. They just had the strongest wills on the field. They were going to beat you and they wouldn't stop until they did.
Agreed and they both had something that’s incredibly valuable to an offensive player and that’s BALANCE. Both were very difficult to bring to the ground. Their 40 times are the most insignificant numbers in NFL history. Those times ⏱ mean nothing when ya can’t tackle them.
The fact that we got to see GOAT vs GOAT with him and Primetime going at it. We were truly blessed to see the top guys at those positions play each other.
Thank you 49ers for training at UOP in the 90's! I got to watch Jerry and the squad practice for free! They were 2 blocks from my neighborhood, half the block would come watch them right off brookside road and pershing av. Great memories, even better now #1 GOAT WR.
If UOP wasn't so stupid, Stockton would have been the PERMANENT summer home of the 49ers instead of Santa Clara. It was great times while it lasted though.
It's not just the world records it's also how he played the game, he played it honestly and he played aggressively, his hand eye coordination is unreal and the way how he can catch a ball going really fast while also having 3-5 people on him and the way he Bob and weaves through people when running, and the way how he can easily keep running after someone tries to pull him down just shows his shear strength and skill. When the other team gets tired they are done for because then that's when Montana/Young and Rice get on fire and absolutely wreck the field. Rice isn't just #1 for the records, he is #1 for how he played the game.
Moss is great but tbh deondre hopkins might catch rice. Never seen an wr so unsatisfied when he scores a td...like he thinks he can always do better But yes rice #1
THE G.O.A.T....we've owned Niner season tickets since 1981, and it was a privilege growing up watchin Montana to Rice and Young to Rice every Sunday while I was growin up...
stickum doesn't help RAC. stickum doesn't help 1200 yards at age 40. randy at age 35 in his one year with the year the 49ers went to the super bowl? 434 yards, 3 touchdowns.
His 1987 season is one of the top seasons any player, at any position, has had in the history of the NFL. He was on place for THIRTY TD's that season before the strike. Thirty. 30. GOAT
Let this sink in jerry rice ran a 4.71 and he was still taking catches to the house not the biggest strongest or the fastest and still became the goat 🐐 that goes to show you what hard work and faith in god can do for you in life ❤
For me it’s a coin flip between Rice & LT for the most DOMINANT (aka the GOAT) football player ever. He put absurd numbers in an era where they run the 🏈 like crazy so can you imagine what he’ll do in today’s game?
Fortunately, I'm old enough to have gotten to see his career...he was exciting every time. When Joe Montana and GR hit the field you knew it would be excellent football!
Jerry Rice is an all time great! Coming out of HBCU school like Mississippi Valley State to the pros that’s amazing. He played 20 seasons in the NFL and being in the Hall of Fame. A lot of receivers wanna be him, but they don’t wanna work as hard as him. He is a native of Starkville, Mississippi who used to catch bricks and run up and down the hills. He was the heart and soul for the 49ers who played with the likes of Joe Montana and Steve Young. He was an all-time receiver with 1,549 catches, 22, 895 receiving yards, and 197 touchdowns. Salute to #80 Jerry Rice!!!
HE has been incredible for many years, won superbowls, an MVP for one, has so many records, amazed over 20000 yards, over 200 touchdowns, and over 1000 reception,s before the superbowl era or the brady era were the game is 90 % passing. He IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!
+Max Bisogno His yards after catch are the reason he's number one. I guarantee that even if not using gloves he would have still had over 20,000 yards by the end of his season.
There have been guys like Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson that are in the short list of greatest ever and one could argue rather well that Moss was the greatest deep threat ever or that nobody was as dominant as Megatron at any given time, but when you put longevity, records, consistency and perfection in route running +hands in the mix all rolled up in one reciever JR is definitely the GOAT and oh he also has 3 SB rings and was MVP of one and so he clearly is that guy.
@Anthony Joseph *The Patriots have been to 9 God damn Super Bowls. It has nothing to do with his skin color. The fact you pull the race card tells me why you really think he's the goat.
Nah Brady is so fricken inconsistent at times. Plus he’s been caught cheating lol. Rice on the other hand is so freakishly consistent that even 40 yrs old he caught for more than 1000 yards. Consistency is what makes a difference between Goat and one of the goats
I was born and raised in Berkeley California. Met this man and shook his hand. This cat will burn you like a match. And you know it. ❤ We love you Jerry.
"OMG he used stickum! That means Moss is better." Jerry Rice only used stickum during his ROOKIE season, which was nowhere near his best season. Put his best 10 seasons against any other receiver's top 10 seasons and Jerry wins every time. He had the greatest work ethic and ran every route to perfection. The only route he wasn't best at was the deep route and that's the only route Randy Moss beats him in. Jerry Rice wasn't a quitter and showed up to every Super Bowl he played in, even when he lost. He even won a Super Bowl MVP. You could even argue that he could've won co MVP during Super Bowl 24. He set the tone for the offense in that game when he caught the ball, crash into Steve Atwater, and scored the first touchdown of the biggest beat down in Super Bowl history. He was a key part of the 49ers dynasty from 1988 to 1994, and a key part of their offense from 1986 to 1998. He wasn't their vocal leader, but their spiritual leader. He's even the most clutch receiver of all time. Not to mention, he finished all of his routes, showed great sportsmanship, and always carried himself well. He didn't curse out coaches on the bus on the way from games. His baby mother didn't get a restraining order against him. He never said that he didn't feel appreciated when he was with any of the teams he was on. I could go on forever but you get the point. Jerry Rice was the real deal.

Cough Larry Fitzgerald
@@Jonathan83X That's why he was scarily competitive. Didn't care about his long term recovery
Wtf, he’s crazy, good kinda crazy
I remember that game. I was a kid. I believe it was a Monday night game vs the broncos
Story goes that his dad was a brick layer and he would help his dad on projects. His dad would throw down bricks to him and Jerry would have to catch them. Hands of steel.

In my opinion Jerry Rice, hands down, is the greatest WR ever. It's not even close.
Your points are quite accurate. Naming the greatest, QB, LB, RB, etc., seem to always be up for debate. As far as the WR position goes, there is no debate. Just look at the career numbers.......
Jerry Rice : receptions 1549 receiving yards 22,895 receiving TD's: 197 rushing TD's: 10 = 207 total TD's!
Randy Moss : receptions 982 receiving yards 15,292
receiving TD's: 156 punt return TD's: 1 = 157 total TD's
Terrell Owens : receptions 1078 receiving yards 15,934 receiving TD's: 153.
To their credit, Randy Moss and T.O put up some historical career numbers and won numerous awards along with other accolades and some postseason success. They truly are all-time greats! Both of them will definitely be in the Hall of Fame some day.
As far as Jerry Rice goes, his career numbers are just beyond anything we've ever seen before or since. They are simply unworldly! His postseason success also speaks for itself. He's quite possibly the best football player ever.

Stats. That's all I have to say. Jerry Rice blows away every other WR ever in every receiving category.
This: Here are some numbers. 1549 catches. That's 224 more than Tony Gonzalez's 1325. 197 career receiving touchdowns. That's 41 more than Randy Moss's 2nd place 156. 208 career total touchdowns. That's 33 more than Emmitt Smith's 2nd place 175. The only receiver to ever produce a 200 yard receiving game; in the Super Bowl with 215 in Super Bowl 23.

It’s not unanimous that he had the best work ethic of all time. The real number one guy Walter Payton could def argue with him on work ethic. Walter never ran out of bounds because he felt like that was quitting on a play. I saw Jerry rice run out of bounds a lot to avoid a hit
I'd say Peyton is regarded as the best off-field preparer, but physically, Rice stayed the most conditioned.

Exactly. Rice dominated in big games, while guys like Moss would often wilt.
4th Quarter, 2 minute drill. Most players get tired by that point in a game. Rice was just getting started.
Without a doubt the greatest receiver EVER! The greatest football player of all-time! The best after the catch! The best work ethic! What else can you say about this guy. 22 1000 yard seasons is insane. He made BOTH Montana and Young great.
I saw Jim Brown at 2 and thought "what the hell kinda typo is this?!", and then I said "oh yeah, Rice" haha

He is a class act and is deservedly #1.

mind body soul heart style.. this guy is truly the goat
And they both famously trained by running up a hill
The fact that we got to see GOAT vs GOAT with him and Primetime going at it. We were truly blessed to see the top guys at those positions play each other.

Every time I see that comment it pisses me off cause I know whose behind it...those cheatin' ass Patriot fans. Just cause they wanna call Brady the Goat. NOPE JR IS DA GOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His numbers will be broken...quite simply the G.O.A.T.

You could also add Lynn Swann to the Steelers, but other than that you're spot on.
I think Gronkowski should be the Pats greatest receiver as he was on the team much longer then Moss.
I only did WRs but yeah, if you included TEs than Gronkowski has a strong case for the Pats since Moss was only there 3 years and Gronk was there 9. If it's just WRs then it really has to be Moss.
I would take either Bruce or Holt over Ellard. Other than that spot on.
@@xaviervega468 Preferring Holt and Bruce over Ellard is absolutely fair. Part of my deal is that I think Ellard is underrated. One really interesting fact about Holt and Bruce is that they deflated each other's stats because they had to " share" receptions and therefore yards and touchdowns as well. I tried to judge actually playing the position as well as stats and accomplishments but even there Holt and Bruce have their cases but I think Ellard is underrated.
Jerry Rice the Goat. Classiest man in football❤
