  • From a commercial cassette released in 1988 on the York label (MC 105) and featuring the choir of Lincoln Cathedral, directed by David Flood, with Roger Bryan (organ). William Mathias’ anthem (Op. 87) was composed for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. The words are from Psalm 67 (slightly altered and re-arranged):
    Let the people praise thee, O God; yea, let all the people praise thee.
    O let the nations rejoice and be glad; for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.
    Then shall the earth bring forth her increase; and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.
    God shall bless us; and all the ends of the world shall fear him.
    God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us;
    That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
    GLORIA.

    I regret that I didn't visit Lincoln Cathedral on my tours through the U.K. as this choir is exquisite. Photos of Lincoln left a robust picture in my mind.
