I’m a Navy wife. Got a job in a country I wont mention. Dated a tall lanky man for bit from one of the NSW communities. One of the local bars in this country was owned by a wife from the Navy, so the bar was kinda designed and had art work for Navy divers, Seals, Rescue swimmers and Eod on the walls and tables. I dated a rescue swimmer. One of the navy sailors skipped him when he went to take a leak. My guy, the rescue swimmer, who I was dating at time. Super nice, innocent and tall, ended up being bullied by some ghetto regular ship sailors,
Like 6 on 1. it was a 6-8 of them against just my man. Eventually the entire bar of seals, eod, rescue swimmers and divers man handle this Navy Sailor who does not know how to swim. They all decide to continually choke him out, while carrying him to the near by beach. While fighting off his friends. And the guy I was seeing at time, the 6’4 lanky rescue swimmer, swam him out. As far as he could as the seals, other rescue swimmers and eod stood by at the beach. Few divers too. This younger black sailor changed his mind and forgave him after a few head dunks that we could hear and see. And there was kinda a code. Like they’ve done this before. Never mess with a swimmer, they will swim you out while you’re unconscious.
The rescue swimmer ended up cheating on me. And I ended up marrying one of the seals. But that bar, the men, and the brotherhood and fun they had together was a sight to behold. The fact the guy I dated didn’t swimmer him so far out because he knew. The fact my date at the time brought him back, shook hands and bought this black sailor beers and shots afterwards. Its a code among these strong Navy men that I do respect. And I know they they wouldn’t have harmed him for sure, but its the fact a harmless man, carrying out a ghetto acting man into deep water and still respecting him that was something I really respected. Never mess with Navy Special warfare people I say.

If someone starts off in the army or marine corps by the time they are ready to apply for a special operations units there is a very good chance they would have combat experience maybe numerous tours specially during the GWOT and they may have already performed a special operations role for instance in recce platoons in their parent unit but a navy SEAL could go from being a sailor doing a FOD walk-down on a carrier to being on the ground in Afghan performing a special operations role in very challenging conditions in a relatively short time having never been shot at before. I don’t know any other way to say this other than - It gets real very quickly in Afghan.
I don’t want to seem like I’m lessening the contributions made by sailors on ships but very different job and surroundings.
So my point is sometimes in rare occasions there can be inexperienced seals in the wrong place at the wrong time and that’s when things go wrong.
I was in the British Army , I served in Afghan during Veritas/Fingal in 2001/2002 and Herrick 8 in 2008 so I’m basing my opinion on this subject based upon interactions and conversations I had with US forces both there and in Iraq. If I’ve got any of this wrong or I have made a mistake please tell me and I will adjust my comment and apologise.

    • @spacemanapeinc7202
      @spacemanapeinc7202 2 месяца назад +2

Yes there is inexperience for a reason, the SEALs were never meant to be marines. SEALs at there core, are a frogman demolition unit that has transformed into a Commando Force. They have a lot more in common with Clearance Divers here in the UK than they do with units like the SBS, and their training is reflective of that. Also only a small minority of SEAL applicants are experienced sailors, soldiers, marines, or airmen. Most applicants are civilians that have passed basic training with no years of service under their belt. It's very unlike the UKSF, where you at least need a minimum of two years of service to even apply.

There are stories of SF and Recon Bubbas in Vietnam that didn't want to work with them either. It perplexes me why they even exist. I know that there may be a lot of good guys in that organization, but if the top doesn't get its act together, then the rest of the teams won't either. The simple fact is EVERY SOF unit has had infractions, they just do a better job at keeping it quiet.

I flew quite a few medivac chase missions, as an assault pilot, in Afghanistan, in addition to assault missions. When the seals were in our AO, it made for a busy day for the med.
We supported the SAS and GBs too, from an assault aspect and medivac standpoint. Those guys were surgical. The seals were the opposite of surgical, lol. Just one mans opinion. Not saying they were bad... just very aggreasive took a much wider battle field presence, which increased their secondary engagements.
They were great fighters and they are obviously trained that way, but it was fascinating to see how the different communities worked. Especially as a young regular army guy, who randomly got thrown in a unit that picked up the 160th overflow work, direct support to the AUS SAS and med chase, in a very active AO, during the surge. Tony E. DeDolph was a SEAL who helped haze and ultimately murder Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar, an Army Special Forces soldier. However, let's not forget Marine Gunnery Sgt. Mario Madera-Rodriguez helped in the hazing - a Marine Raider. In Vietnam, it was Army soldiers who mass-murdered unarmed civilians during the My Lai Massacre. In Iraq, it was US Marines who murdered unarmed Iraqi civilians in the Haditha Massacre. Are SEALs generally "worse" than other US warfighters? No. They have just had more popularity recently, and for the general population to learn that they aren't necessarily saints is shocking to some. They will go out of the limelight, and some other group will take their place. In Vietnam it was the Special Forces. Recently, it was the SEALs. It will most likely be the Marine Raiders next. Then, they will be vilified or fall from the limelight as well. The cycle repeats itself. History repeats itself. The next war will repeat itself.

At 63 and a former Submariner of the Silent Service, I noticed in my youth as a late Boomer that the quality of the character of Americans has been declining since the politicians of Vietnam. Most of our Founders were not uber pius Christians like the Great Awakening preachers of the 1700s but they had reverence for Christian virtures. Self sacrifice, honesty, service, fidelity, kindness, forgiveness etc. Many of those virtues were included in our military ethos mottos. De Oppresso Liber etc. Since 1963 reverence for God was banned in public schools and its at an all time low. We were never a Christian Nation like ancient Israel was originally a Single Religion but we were a nation of motly Chistians and others with two alegences. One to our God and the other to our Constitution. Totally separate and the first in history. We are now a nation of selfish undisciplined brats and that makes selection for the best of the best much harder. Lowering standards of character personal discipline and moral fortitude in every area of American life including many Churches. We are at the precipice of self destruction today.

The good seals should trash the bad seals, isn't it a "referendum of all the special forces".

  • @Major_Pipps

I'm just a nothing special Marine... But honestly, I really hate seeing the in-flighting between the Special Operations crowd.
I have no doubt that most of the heat comes from the SEALS stepping out of the shadows and doing movies and books, I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it... But I understand how it opens them up to massive scrutiny from other SF groups that feel Tier operators should stay clandestine.
My thoughts, could be way off, but I think it's a little bit jealous/envious that SEALS are doing it, and also that SEALS might be betraying the unspoken rule of the clandestine - living in the shadow life.
If it helps the SF community with public opinion and quality recruiting, I say good shit and keep it up. If it's hurting public opinion and making recruitment harder, it needs to stop.

My papa was a SEAL and served with ST1 during Vietnam. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a SEAL like him, but as I got older and learned more about the teams and what's going on, I don't really know if I want to follow in his footsteps. Most of the people I talk to, including my uncle, who was in the 75th, say's I should go Army SOF or ASPECWAR. I still don't know what I want to do.

Seems like a lot of special operators are on social media making names for themselves these days. I see a lot of SOF guys on here as well. But I will agree that the SEALS need to keep their shit in house. It seemed to really take off after Neptune Spear. I went to language school with a few SEALS and a couple Green Berets. Granted this was in the late 1980s, but the SEALS were a lot less humble than the Green Berets. Being former Navy with a few friends to this day who were SEALs it is tough to say. but there really does seem to be a culture problem within the community.

    Question:
How do different SF teams differ culturally? Like I'd assume different ODAs are relatively similar within their theatre but I wonder how different they may be between things like different theatres
If they separate them by teams and stuff too (dive, mountain etc.), I wonder if there are also differences in culture between those

    • @ValhallaVFT

Really varies team by team. Was on 3 different ODAs throughout my career, two had very similar cultures, one was quite a bit different. Not all teams are created equal, some are really good, some not so much.

I haven’t done anything or gone to combat like you guys, so forgive me, and go ahead and tell me off if that’s the right thing to do, but I’m just gonna give my honest take on the TF bruiser/Chris Kyle thing and ask a few legitimate questions I have.
Ultimately I still support what the GWOT was fundamentally about, stamping out ITs. These are legitimate bad people that still exist and cause a lot of harm. So building on that, should TF bruiser really be placed under such scrutiny for maybe sometimes getting some people that were halfway ITs or sympathetic to their IT cousins that tried to enable them? One of the big things I hear from GWOT guys is how the ROEs neutered them so much, should TF bruiser really be blamed for trying to skirt aside those ROEs and for having a more “crusader” mindset?
