I feel for Marcus, he went through an awful trauma, a trauma his team was destined to experience because of poor leadership decisions. In his interview with Anderson cooper he says part of what actually happened and he calls himself a coward. The navy wrote the book for him without his knowledge and basically said “do you want to be a broke coward or a millionaire hero”. He chose the latter, but idk that he was in the mental state to make any decisions. I don’t think he is a coward for what happened that day, but he is never going to be able to heal without writing his actual book that tells his own truth.

DAMN! It’s been 30 years since I was in SF, which for anyone that reads this SF is dangerous even in stateside training. I was paralyzed from the chest down in a HAHO accident. Take that into account when considering joining SF. So when I was in there was no demolition pay or incentive pay and our bonuses were capped at $20,000. I don’t fault anyone for the extra pay that I didn’t get, SF had a very drop rate in Selection alone, and the Q Course wasn’t easy either. Not to mention multiple deployments everywhere and tons of schools when you first get to a Group. We were gone all of the time even pre-9/11, very high divorce rate.

Also, boot camp needs to be a minimum of 3 months and needs to focus on physical fitness and war fighting (weapons training, hand to hand, and stealth and confinement). Even more for officers.

There have been plenty of SecDef with non/military backgrounds. Robert McNamara came from a car company and was SecDef during Vietnam war.

I remember seeing officers w/NCOM's & NAM's and thinking "Wow they must have done something impressive". Then at the end of my deployment our plt com got a NCOM w/ V and as they were reading out the award i was like... I was there for that... That's kinda but not really what happened... Is this just for his career??!?!! Uh yes, yes it is (sometimes) Really changed how I look at officer awards. Not saying all are fake but a stack tells a story...

Both units are among top 10 special units in the world but in my opinion the Green Berets are way better.First of all, it's harder to join there compared to the 75th Regiment.Selection lasts longer and SFQC is more difficult than Ranger school.And second of all,you have much more military knowledge and responbilities as a Green Beret in terms of military tactical organization,weapons,medicine,foreign languages etc.

Well said. My only comment is that I don’t necessarily agree that the rank of Major is sort of equivalent to the rank of private. A private is a guy who could possibly enlist with no higher education or leadership training/experience. A Major likely has a BS, a Masters, multiple leadership courses, training and experience leading troops and management related to those tasks. I also think that in many cases, reaching the rank of Major requires just as much work and talent as someone advancing from the rank of Major to 3 or 4 Star General. We have all seen guys who are politically connected (had the right Gen officer “sponsor” or married the right woman) and rapidly advance from O4/O5 to O7/O8, spending very little time as an O5/O6. Now, regardless of real qualifications or experience, they have “made the cut” and are in a position to advance to 09 and above solely due to “who ya know or who ya blow”, being in the right place at the right time, or what position your roommate or best friend from the academy is currently in. Agree with 99.5% of what you said.
