NGL he disappoints me with embellishment in stories. When he starts adding details that are impossible to know (Like what the deceased person had going through their mind) it annoys me to no end because it's guess work. I prefer rigid factual accuracy and no embellishment and so Mr. Ballens way of telling stories isn't good for me.
If mere words were enough to destroy a "brotherhood", then it wasn't a brotherhood to begin with.

@rickb3565. AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO COMMENTED ON THIS TRIPE. It is definitely a brotherhood. But one someone like you could never understand, much less be part of. You think your "friends" are really friends. Find one who will actually risk something for you. It doesn't have to be their life, although that is how special operators measure friendship. And hence the basis for the brotherhood. Just ask one, or all of your friends collectively to give you $10K, no questions asked. And find out how many "friends" you really have. I'm betting you don't have a single one.
Now, how many of them, including you, knowing they could escape a lethal situation unharmed. Would go back into a firefight that one of their "friends" can't escape from, knowing full well that they are outnumbered and outgunned, and that it could very easily, possibly even likely, turn into a situation where both they, and the friend they are trying to save go home in body bags. How many would go? The question of whether or not to go back would never enter the mind of a SEAL, or any other special operator I've known. And the guy in trouble knows his "brothers" will never dishonor their code and abandon him to save their own asses.
How many people do you know who can say that?
That's one of the many differences between someone like you, and any special operator. That's the brotherhood. Always living up to the highest expectations of themselves, and their brothers. Mull that over.

I found out he was a SEAL through the comment section of his videos. I dont think Ive heard him talk about being a SEAL on his channel but his channel content doesnt really call for it.

He's a great storyteller. Love his channel.
He mentioned it when this was a brand new channel, but it was never a conceited sort of thing. He was always humble. He just told a few stories from his time as a seal. Any seals that have a problem with him need to get over themselves and grow up.
Same. I just started watching him because I thought he looked like Jack from This Is Us, and he intrigued me 😂 his stories are awesome.
He seems far more personable than some of the other seals with a social media presence.
No chest besting, just a guy who achieved something special in the past but does not attach his identity or self worth to it. A warrior who has successfully reintegrated himself back into society. Kudos to you Mr Ballen.
To be fair, keep in mind that he didn’t serve to the extent of other more prominent SEALs on the internet. Someone like DJ Shipley (DEVGRU) or Shawn Ryan (CIA) not only served with the “white side” SEALs longer, but went into the “black” side as well.
Operator Syndrome is a thing. PTSD is a thing. Running 150 ops per year for a decade straight is different than 2 deployments. That’s not to take anything away from Mr Ballen, but it’s important to recognize the impact of the job over time. Unfortunately a lot of these guys are not the same.

Most guys that have gone to a combat zone, either spec ops or support contingencies know how to differentiate between posers and con artists. Lingo, the way one carries themself, attitude, and sometimes the blank stare. I know a Marine that got extremely offended by an Army soldier that shit all over me for being in the Air Force as a Security Forces member. Typically, there is jeering and joking amongst military branches. It’s fun to poke fun and laugh at the dumb stereotypes of each branch. This Army veteran was dead serious. He shit all over my service in Iraq from 07-08 and 2010. When the Marine heard this, he jumped up and said “shut the Fvck up!” The Marine already had some intel about me. I was awarded a 100 percent disability rating for PTSD the first time i applied. The VA affirmed that rating three years later when they made it permanent and total. There are more disabilities in wont go into. This army soldier was a reservist carpenter that lies about his service constantly. He stated that the infantry came to him one day and said we need someone. Doesn’t work that way. The infantry wouldn’t pull a carpenter to go on dismounted patrols outside the wire. He could get himself killed or the other infantrymen in the squad/fire team. I’ve got mad respect for the Marine that put that dude in check. Mind you, the soldier has been “fighting” for a higher disability rating since he got out in 2014. The Marine, who received a Purple Heart from an IED, is only now receiving help to get his VA claim taken care of. He went through multiple rounds of surgery at Walter Reed Medical Center for contusions/fractures in his face. He’s got a solid plate and they did cosmetic stuff for him. He’s a boss.
Dude Mr. Ballen has created an army of loving loyal fans who appreciate him as a normal civilian just making it in life. He has started multiple charities and organizations. Keep rocking Mr B. We love you man.
Agreed! One thing I really like about what Mr. Ballen does is how he's showing everyone that PTSD and depression doesn't have to be an end all for you life. I'm sure he has inspired many vets to keep pushing through until life becomes ok again.

I have worked with three different ex SEALS in my life.
Great guys.
But none of them could let five minutes pass or hesitate to to hijack the subject to remind you that they are SEALS.
Whenever someone tells me they're a Navy seal I rarely believe them. It honestly hurts their reputation with me more than just saying "I was in the Navy." So many people pretend to be seals it's kinda ruined the weight of it

I sat beside a dude at the VA one time, and this guy proceeded to tell me that he was a Frogman about 25 times; in the span of roughly 30 minutes…I had to act like I got a call and walked away. He was the definition of an egotistical maniac. I got an even better story from the same exact VA medical center, but that’s for a different day.
I do not believe for one second you have worked with 3 former Seals. The FBI itself did it's studies for Stolen Valor and the report showed that for every man that has really been a SEAL more then 1000 men falsely claim to be one. Also, what do you do for work? Seals do not work typical jobs after they get out....They are highly sought after for positions in the CIA Special Activities Division, with firearm manufacturers, contractors, etc....
I worked with two guys were SF. Not SEALs. I’d known both of them nearly a year before I found out. Two other guys who showed up and immediately told me they were 101st and a SEAL, turned out both were lying.
I was only a Navy medic but it’s honestly sad that his community did this to him. He earned his respect no matter how many tours or what side of the SEALs he was on. I know he probably doesn’t need it but from a Navy vet to another love to just give him a hug and tell him thank you for being the best of the best and risking his life.
Don't say you were ONLY a Navy medic. My late fiance (God bless his soul)was a Hospital Corpsman (H5, I think ?)for the Navy out in San Diego. You guys are the ones that take care of Marines, their family (on bases), and staff. Without you, they wouldn't function ! Thank you, sir, for all that you've done ! I served in the Marines and I get the "silent professional" mentality. However, Mr Ballen is FAR from a shameless self promoter. He's remarkably humble, charismatic and a gripping story teller. The real douchbags in this scenario are the butt hurt Seals who treated their former team mate like shit. SFMF

Don't flatter yourself. Being a marine is often a cut above the average grunt. But it is a long way from being a special forces operator. I know bunch of marines from my active duty days. They knew what special operators were like. You clearly know very little about these men. Judging from the ones I know I thought marines were all about respect, and respecting codes. Especially the ones that are passed down, not written down. And most especially when it comes to being warriors.
My son in law was a FAST Company marine. My son's father in law is a retired marine. I retired out of Dam Neck Virginia. My son is a special forces operator. Another son in law is a mustang in the naval air wing. And my other son in law did his time in uniform with DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six). I wonder how he met my daughter?
For the record. Us butt hurt douchbags disagree with everything you said. And this might be a good time for you to reflect on your comments, and ask yourself what kind of marine would say what you said.

Mind blowing he got this type of backlash from his own people. Specially when SEALS promote themselves more than any other special operations group out there.
Seals are one of the best soldiers in the world so it makes sense to promote yourself, but I think this situation has more to do with not only how ballen became successful along with donating so much money, but also possibly him becoming injured. I wouldn’t disrespect a seal, however some are actual assholes more than regular soldiers.

It's about professionalism so it's understandable that some guys who ARE quiet professionals like they were supposed to be originally have a problem with it. You rarely hear about SF or Delta guys talking about their experiences for the sake of profit.
Every person handles trauma and PTSD in different ways. Serving two tours or 20 still makes you a SEAL. I thank every single one of you who have served and given up so much of your life and health. I have nothing but admiration and respect for you all.
You're a SEAL once you're assigned to a team, right? And what if you get hurt or killed in training? The community is making an ass of itself.

I too, was medically retired from the military. It was an incredibly hard transition because I had NO plan for such an event and for years, I went through mental anguish, trying to figure out who I was. Suddenly, everything stopped. I felt like I was thrown off a moving bus and all my friends kept on going. It got really dark, I suffered from depression, anxiety, heart ache and feelings of being useless, broken and damaged goods. All of this was made worse by the fact that I had to maintain my posture being the father of two young children and a wife that decided to work while I was waiting for word from the medical settlement. They put you on a TDRL list (Temporary medical retirement list) and it last for 5 years. So for 5 long year, I was in fear of them slashing my retirement pay. Stress was a daily reality and I was trying to figure out how to live and what I even 'could' do.
My condolences. I got unexpectedly medically separated from Peace Corps back in the early 90s. Went from acing my interview in the morning for my third year to getting the medical discharge call in the afternoon, left Africa a month later. Too many bush taxi and motorcycle accidents.
I managed to switch to Plan B (going to grad school) shortly after I got back, but it was still really hard for a long time. And the injury was permanent. Completely screwed up my life plans at that point in time.
Where are the transition plans for soldiers? It doesn't seem right to medically transition someone out of service and just let them flounder
I don't know what it's like to go through something like this, but I've heard countless stories of things like it and watched one story first hand. I'm really glad you all are doing well and kicking after all that, I thank you all for your service to us and the world ❤

I had to retire in my late 50's due to a medical issue. For a year, I felt worthless. I had no motivation to do anything. I know how I felt and I would say you felt 100 times worse. I didn't have to worry about money or worry who was going to care for me. I probably would have killed my self if I did. Bottom line, just from my experience, I know a little of what you went through. I hope things are better for you and thank you for your service.
John is the very best story teller out there. He owes nothing to fans beyond that and finding interesting stories to share. His private life should be his own.
These guys showed their character. They showed who they are and you are better off without them, you divulged nothing inappropriate. You are a mesmerizing storyteller and are adored by millions of us. They are in the past, leave them there. The people you are supposed to be with will be at your side.
They only know how to promote being a seal though i think he meant in regular civilian life they don't promote themselves in other ways they possibly have strengths and dont know it cause all the know is being a seal .

I agree these guys are not his friends. If they want to act like that they are being very poor role models for all the kids that look-up to them. What a bunch of Bullies to the ones who mistreated Mr. Ballen. That brings shame on them. It's not Mr. Ballen's fault that he got hurt. Any one of them is just one injury away from their career ending too, so they're no better than him. That actually disapoints me that they would act like that to one of their "Brothers." They may have died for him at the time not because he was their brother but because their ego would not let a man be left behind. Whatever works in the field I guess but very disapointing behavior.

I say all that to say, IMO the SF community in general is very toxic. Yes there are some really greats guys that belong to the community but as a whole damn they can be insufferable at times.
Mr. Ballen has become an expert storyteller! He was an amazing Navy SEAL and I'm so sorry for the pain of his past. I hope he knows he has legions of loyal followers who he makes happy everyday ❤

dshepherd107. I'm retired Navy and have lived in Virginia Beach for 33 years. There are no SEALS on the Norfolk base, or anywhere near it. The even number teams are based at Little Creek Amphibious base. And DEVGRU is on Dam Neck. I've never seen or heard of any SEAL acting like arrogant jerks around anyone except other SEALS. I retired from Dam Neck. And I've lived about 5 miles from the base since 1992. Like me these guys have been living in neighborhoods around here for decades. And I would be shocked if even one out of a hundred people around here know it. Half of them don't even believe SEAL Team Six actually exists. And many of the people have been here longer than me. Some have lived here their entire life. I submit this as living proof that SEALS dont go running around and telling everyone they are SEALS.

I was at hotel that’s right next to Neptune Statue on the top floor (35th I think) and I heard that all kinds of jet fighters fly all the time and I sat on my balcony hoping to see one? There were non for two days I was there lol it was also around Veterans Day..

If you look too closely at some of your heroes or actually get to see what’s inside, you’ll often end up disillusioned and disappointed. The truly great ones are the same person inside as outside, and never need to elevate themselves or degrade others.
this guy doesn't deserve to be kicked out of that community especially when it's so hard to get in. He's clearly a decent enough person. You can tell when someone has that fury or anger inside of them and he just doesn't have that.

Want to know what is not only dumb, but patently idiotic. You saying all that hush hush stuff is dumb, when you don't even know what it is. Have you ever held a security clearance? Obviously not. If you had ever held a Top Secret clearance, like all SEALS do, you would know what the hush hush information is, and why it needs to stay that way.
Here is a little something for that hollow bone between your ears. A lot of that dumb stuff is kept hush hush because if it ever got out it would be a death sentence for anywhere from one to who knows how many people who had risked their lives getting that information and giving it to us. And then there is that dumb "national security" data and other stuff our government doesn't want our enemies to know about.
Here is something no SEAL has ever said "I'm better off without my brothers." You couldn't torture that comment out of any SEAL.
So why don't you stop insulting that brotherhood, and embarrassing yourself by commenting on things you have absolutely no knowledge of. If you talk about something you actually know, you might not sound as idiotic as you do here.

MrBallen is the only "celebrity" I would defend on a personal base of character. He just seems like a genuine and humble individual. He by no means ever represented himself and former career in a selfish manner or in a way that would make the seals look bad. Nah, it’s not jealousy. It’s a standard. You don’t use your time in service for personal gain after.You don’t exploit your “story” for profit. This isn’t even just a SEAL thing. Any combat arms unit will look at you as a grifting, self-serving shit bag. The likes of Tim Kennedy are beloved by people who never did anything, hated by those who did.

Sure, they can be sick of it - I can get behind that. I'm simply saying that given the choices the more public figures made, the others', who at one point were teammates of their's could have been more empathetic and resort less to straight up hate so easily. @@DAAllan82
@@DAAllan82maybe, but the seals brought that on themselves. They really really dug into the fame. It’s not like there’s 1 or 2 guys out there, it’s like par for the course for that entire community. I don’t ever see delta doing that. The 2 people i know of that were in delta don’t even wear their special forces tabs or anything, and their linkedin only says special operations community and the timeframe they were there. Seal community brought this on themsleves.
@@billbillson5082 You’re right that far fewer Delta and Green Berets go public and the Navy leaned heavily into the PR game with the SEALs as their poster child.
But to be fair, there are literally tens of thousands of retired SEALs. A few dozen of them are public. So it’s really not that common in the grand scheme of things.

The ego SEALS have is absolutely massive. They are willing to throw their “brothers” under the boss if u hurt their ego in any sort of way. The whole “we dont speak about what we do because we are too special to show how special we are”. Its just corny

Dodgers-sw2uk. Nobody is getting thrown under the bus here. They haven't put out a hit, or wished him any ill. It's just that some of them have sort of excommunicated him. And nobody would ever have known about it if Ballen hadn't told the world. He took SEAL business into the civilian realm. And that's something you just don't do. Doing that caused a lot more SEALS to excommunicate him. Than he had already isolated for talking about being a SEAL. And he knew all of this before he did it. So it didn't come as a surprise.

I’ve never seen the videos he posted about being a seal, but the way he takes responsibility and understands why they did what they did, I’d think they would probably be chillin especially with what they have been through together. It's very sad because every time I watch you tell amazing stories I give all working seals a small prayer hoping they are okay. Sad that they turned on you, I think you are an amazing story giver. Hopefully, they will lose whatever ego problems and allow you back where you belong. Your not doing them bad at all, if anything they should realize your a bright light in a dark world. John, I can kind of see both sides a little. I know and understand how deeply the community feels. But I see also selfishness and unforgiveness on their side. I really don't see your trespass as a deep injury to them at all. You have very much made the people who love the Seals anonymously as citizens, love the Seal teams more because we also see the human personal side of you as a Navy Seal. You give them a face even like Marcus Lutrell. Just the same as you were both injured in battle and had to leave. Your situation was with lesser injuries but no one is counting. Your honor is not Blemished! Your a great guy and we will always be fans of yours as well as the teams. I thank all of you for your self sacrifice and diligence and rediness. And your America's great story teller and we can't do without that can we? Thank you for sharing this part of your story. We have a much better picture of you now. It doesn't have acne haha. I’m literally caught up on every single ballen story to date. “Patiently” waiting for the next one. In fact I can confidently say I’ve seen all AT LEAST TWICE? AT LEAST!!
It's unfortunate but the personality type that is capable of performing extreme things, also reacts in extreme ways. I had several SEALs as clients and the psychology there is different, it's a whole different way of seeing and moving through the world and it also sees many things as absolutes. I didn't even work in psych, just PT but I had to treat them differently and work with them differently, because of the mindset. I'm so sorry that these men with whom you've shared blood and faced the most terrifying things in the dark, that they've turned on you like that. I can see how that would cause you to uproot and move. I really love your story telling. You're good at it and I hope you continue and achieve more success.

As someone who worked along side several groups in the special operations community, it was pretty well known amongst our guys that seals liked to sniff their own farts and were overall unpleasant to work with so this is nothing surprising to me. SF guys were always chill and fun to work with. Just my experience

My god i feel for Ballen. I was just a grunt in the marines and when i started with my streaming and content they all shit on me. Same scenario, battle buddies, best friends, etc... i dont think military guys like other military guys becoming known for things that maybe other guys in the platoon felt bad about doing. Its such a weird and depressing feeling. Knowing you would still die for these brothers but they all hate you now bc you used your experiences to elevate your station in life.
Dudes so humble, I’ve listen to maybe 100 of his stories and had no idea he was a SEAL.

I never knew Mr. Ballen was a Seal when I started watching his stuff. Most of the people hating him probably did nothing in the military and hate his success.
Ballen is a low key guy! Chances are, he is the sort of dude who'd downplay the epic stuff he did while on deployment - the way old greats like Audie Murphy and Leo Major would...
I had that conversation the other day about people talking of their life experiences.
There's two types of people:
People who love to share their story, sad or happy, peaceful or violent, upward or downhill ect...
And people who rather be silent.
Both have their reasoning. I'm like Mr. Allen. But we also need to understand that people who went through some very challenging experiences or life events like us, to some people who are also like us may not like how we put ourselves out there to raise awareness or simply just to tell cool stories
I'm subscribed to his channel and really enjoy his content. He's a student of life and seems down to earth. His heart is in the right place.

And what Mr. Ballen describes here is EXACTLY the difference between Marine Corps and SEALs. As a Marine, I have done a lot of what he did (after service)...I have worked with others I knew, and generally those who did similar MOS's or jobs...and sometimes, it requires telling stories about yourself or your accomplishments to do this. As a Marine, no Marine would EVER come down on me for helping another Marine...often I'd even identify people by their recognition of one of my stories, or their discussion of something that happened to them...BEERS ALL AROUND! Anger? NEVER! Only threat I ever faced was drinking too much with guys I knew! Marines are BROTHERS, plain and simple. SEALs tend, by-and-large, to be 'wanna-be NSA spooks', and don't want ANY details coming out...yet there are the select few that they support when a book or movie is released. I just don't get it! If I drew fire to save a 'brother's' life...hey, he owes me a beer when we get back...IF we get back. As for the idiocy of 'compartmentalization and black bag' silence...we've got enough of that already. Bravo to Mr. Ballen, for helping others like himself...damn those who have alphabet soup in their minds...and from my own experience, the SEALs are the WORST for having this 'spy vs spy' mentality, even towards their own team members!

True! Though some of the greatest ever warriors (the Audie Murphys, Leo Majors of the world) downplayed their combat exploits! Simo Hayha (the world's greatest sniper) treated his old combat exploits in a rather ho hum way as well!

I know two SEALS - there isn't a single conversation, no matter what the topic, where they bring up their service. I have a feeling they're just jealous that he was getting attention and they weren't..
yea. I wasn't a SEAL but I only talk about service stuff with close friends and family. If it is strangers I avoid the topic all together because there are so many liars and bs artists.
For the record, I love Mr. Ballen, and think he's a fabulous storyteller, and he seems like a very genuine and caring guy. I have no doubt in my heart that whatever the content was that he posted originally that upset the SEAL community, it was definitely unintentional to do so. That being said, there seems to be some misplaced hate and ignorant comments in here regarding "the SEAL's behavior".
I am a military veteran of 16 years, definitely not a SEAL, just your run of the mill guy that did his time and enjoyed every bit (ok most lol) of it. I think the disconnect and confusion for some people comes from never having served in the military. It's not about whether someone is "better" based on whether or not they served, because they aren't. What it IS about is training, bonding, lifestyle, and yes a "code" of sorts, but that really is something unspoken. It isn't taught to anybody, you just come to understand certain things based on having served any length of time in the military.
I have yet to meet a fellow vet who enjoys sitting around in a bar or other social outing, listening to some stranger regale you with all the awesome stuff he did in the military. There is no rule against it, nobody warns you not to do it when you separate, hell, nobody in said bar or social situation is probably even going to SAY anything to you. They will mark it down for what it is to other vets: low brow, gauch, tacky and usually embarrassing...for the listener if not the speaker. This doesn't mean that vets who know each other don't sit back and reminisce about things from time to time, because they do, and that's different. If you want to see the reality of what most vets are like in that regard, go to a local VFW. Chances are there are more bronze star, silver star and purple heart recipients in there on a Saturday evening than you can shake a stick at (although the numbers do lessen as we lose more of our older vets). They drink a beer, watch some news on the television, maybe play a game of pool, and talk about mundane things. Most of those guys probably lived through what would be an epic screenplay, but it's something they'd rather forget, and they certainly don't like to discuss medals, because the last thing they think is that they "earned" any of that. A lot of times someone had to die in order for said medal to be issued, and that's not a link anyone wants to make.
All that being said, that's how your everyday, run of the mill, didn't parachute onto Hitler or take out Bin Laden single handedly type veterans are. While it is truly appreciated deep down, many of us don't even like to hear "thank you for your service", because it makes a lot of us feel awkward. So just imagine how a community of ultra elite veterans are. If I've bonded in a way with fellow soldiers knowing I WOULD have their back in the event something were ever to occur, how much stronger must that unspoken sentiment be for a group of people who quite literally make their JOB out of doing that? Again, I didn't see what he wrote, and I'm certainly not a SEAL. However if I WERE to read it and it struck me as such, then that damn sure means it would have struck an even stronger cord in the SEAL community. They may be upset, and you may really like Mr. Ballen (I know I do), but please don't sit here and call the SEAL community childish, jealous, or any other nonsense. There is a reason the washout rate is so high in their training, it takes a certain type of person to do it, and most of us aren't EVER going to be that type of person. So with that special club membership comes certain rules, and if you listen to Mr. Ballen in the beginning he even makes mention of that, so he was fully aware as well.
I'd like to think that he will make peace with his team members and friends again. He may have committed a faux pas with some of that stuff, but nothing he did was an unpardonable sin. I pray that enough time elapses that his former team members can see the good in what he does, reexamine his motives for any past transgressions, and then forgive and forget. I think they've all got it in them, and I pray it works out that way for all of their sakes.

John served with honor performed his duty to the highest standard and he has my respect. Kudos go out to Mr. Ballen for starting his own company and being successful. Not sure why anyone would shun him for that. How many other SOF have written books and have pod casts promoting themselves and their service. I don't see the problem with any of that. However , there is a certain CEO and founder of a popular veteran connected company that I question the veracity of the mans past and present experiences. There seems to be an effort to whitewash this persons history. He has been popping up as a guest on many of the SOF podcasts lately. How has he escaped the scrutiny that /Mr. Ballen has been subject to. Just sayin'.....

I never thought about it before, how leaving the military requires other kinds of adjustment (like the technology), but i guess it's like leaving any 'insular'/isolated group--the longer you're removed from general society, whether for a cult, prison, or the military even--you lose basic life skills that need to be patiently relearned, and it IS a severely underserved area of need. The coordination (not to mention the funding) would be gargantuan and complex... is that what Mr. Ballen said his former foundation did?
