    His control over the rhythm is exceptional.

    So great. That opening lick was one of the coolest things I've heard ever.

    Just too much! Love you Kenny!
    Keith Jarrett's been my all-time favorite musician since I discovered him in 1999. (Acoustic piano trio.).
    Cheers to you!!

    I like that cheeky reference to 'When You Wish Upon A Star' at 2:22 😁
    (unless it comes from somewhere else of course )

    I'm going to have to watch a few more George Shearing videos to confirm this, but I believe if Kenny was blind, he could still play as well, since he's not looking at the keyboard at all in this video. But consider the phenomenon of sight for musicians. In Jazz, where the players know the tunes and don't need sheet music, all horn players play solos with their eyes closed. It's an automatic reflex, just as people automatically close their eyes when kissing passionately.... so do horn players when playing solos. Additionally, their fingers are eyes that feel the instrument, but for pianists, the keyboard is so large that one needs to move fingers, hands and arms into different positions. Even so, Kenny doesn't need to look at the keys much. I can only imagine how well he will play when he gets really good at playing the piano?

    Man, I love that line he plays at 1:16, I think he took that from Bill Evans but it really fancies my ear.

      Yea, I think the point is: phrases should last more bars when the tempo is higher, and phrases last less bars when the tempo is lower. Sorry if I am stating the obvious.

      @@TheNickzer Is Kenny also making a point about anticipating the downbeat in certain measures?

    • @DanielBarberMusic
      @DanielBarberMusic 2 года назад +3

      Yeah, I wasn’t totally clear about that either. It seemed to me it was about having phrases that have some sort of resolution to them that last those different amounts of time. That way we hear the phrase and then can let go for a moment at least. And it seemed like sometimes he put spaces between phrases and sometimes he didn’t, but the phrases had an “end” to it at least,
      they weren’t not just long lines that lasted for longer than his suggested time span for the different tempos. I hope that’s helpful (and accurate to what he was saying)
