  • What do you think? Does Yars Rising stray too far from the original? And what other reason do they have to make a sequel that has so little to do with the original if they aren't trying to draw in a new generation of fans who don't know better? Did you buy and play Lunar Lander Beyond? What's your thoughts on that one? And most importantly... Do you like Anime?
This has been altered a bit from the original video I was going to post. I don't remember when this was going to air originally but it was a few months back I think. I took out one line that I think could've been misconstrued. It was about Atari making a trailer for Yars Rising comparing it to things kids today like. It didn't add anything and I think could've only created problems.

Just a reminder, my hopes for this video is to inspire respectful debate in the comments. These are my opinions and admittedly some are cranked up to 11 just to meet that goal. In case I didnt make it clear though I want to reiterate that my points are:
that Atari has been doing a good job lately but I don't want them chasing an audience that doesn't want them by mimicking more popular games and franchises. I think they are on the right path but I'm afraid they might be tempted to veer off course.
So far I appreciate the respectful debate and I hope we can continue the discussion! Thanks guys!

Fair complaints, but as an 80's Atari fan, I was humming the Robotech battle theme while playing Defender.
Besides, Atari, with a stylized Mount Fuji symbol, always represented a Western crush on Japanese culture.
This Yar game reminds me of Prismacolor pencils and sketchbooks and indie comics and toys that had 1 season of commercials on channels you could barely see.
It's the kind of thing I would have killed for, back in the day.
Also, ironic claiming Yar's has no backstory. The comic and the theme song single say otherwise.

Honestly it would be bad for Atari if they are forced to keep a certain "style" in all there games, this could cause restriction in ideas and creativity and can lead to stagnation. I can appreciate Atari for the experimentation with these new games and if it brings awareness of Atari to new players then it is a success as Atari does need to expand it's audience along with caring for those who have grew up with Atari.
Yar's Rising screams Wayforward so I don't see that as a new standard but it does show they are trying out new genres in existing IP's and the story could end up leading into what older Yar's fans know about the series. Plus the original Yar's exists in the form of mini games so new players who enjoy Rising could decide to try out the previous Yar's games which introduces them into the more classic Atari.

I think two things will keep them on the right path: 1) a genuine love for their IP and 2) listening to feedback on their game play as they release... for the first point, they need engineers and designers who get why the games are beloved; and for the second point it keeps them from becoming too isolated from the fans if they start to go off the rails from their mission. Overall, I think they will be okay and I like what's they've done so far as their heart seems to be in it and success is following as a result.

That's a harsh view on things. I don't think they will forget who they are and what makes their core brand. After all, that's what made them what they are now. I see no reason why this game can't coexist next to the reimagined ones. I mean: Did Days of Doom change Ataris way? No. I wish them best of luck with this one, they're trying new directions with what they have, and why wouldn't they. I think the glas is half full regarding Atari, they are doing a good job so far.

They've done really good to this point, I would agree with that. But I don't want to see them chasing popular trends and me too games while completely changing their beloved classics. Asteroids the space crafting game and Adventure the first person shooter. Yars Revenge doesn't look that good to me and I feel like it's because they are chasing something that Yars is not. But time will tell and again, I was negative on Lunar Lander Beyond before that was released. But it turned out to be a great playing game with a story that's long winded for my taste.

I disagree. Not only does Atari not exist, the people wearing the Atari skinsuit send out cartridges with the PCB in backwards so it doesn't function. This is absolutely inexcusable. These things sell in such low numbers they could have 1 guy testing them. How long would it take for a guy on the assembly line to plug each cartridge into a 2600 or a test jig and turn it on and see if it works? Especially considering the price!!! They could pay a chinese worker 20 yuan an hour (2.80) to do this. These things are like over 100 Dollars.

IMO, the Yars Rising trailer surprised the hell out of me. I thought about the bright neon of Yars: Recharged and how taking a spaceship shooter and turning it into an anime metroidvania felt... wrong?
At the same time, Atari has been buying up old/retro IPs and I do think it's smart to offer up those IPs to smaller devs so they can do wild, unexpected things with them. Sure, it's a bit of the old throwing spaghetti at the wall, but *only* targeting an aging demographic isn't *growing* their audience either.
My initial impression is the Yars IP was a bad fit for this style of game -- but maybe we'll be surprised when it comes out.

Your channel is among the best, if not THE best out there with regard to reviews. However I have to respectfully, in a friendly manner disagree with you on this one. I've been an Atari user since age 7 in 1979 when I got my Video Pinball unit. Provided the game play is good, I see this new direction as a positive as a next step evolution for the company. After the excellent Atari 50 was released, I felt like it was time to turn the page and look to the future. Of course they can do this while still giving us the oldies but goodies at the same time, especially with hardware (2600 +, 400 mini).

Atari was ruined by 1985: the current holding company with it's name and IP, can ONLY make good decisions going forward by comparison. There isn't anyway they can fail harder than the original company and much later Atari SA/Hasbro - when they each literally killed the brand for decades.

It is a difficult balance, trying to innovate while remaining meaningfully recognizable enough to classic IP. Like many have said in the comments, and you also said in the video, most would applaud Atari's attempts to try something new or try to broaden its appeal. I applaud Atari as well.
With regards to this new Yars game, it looks too generic. I agree with you that the art style is simply like many other games on the market. I think the Yars property could have been better utilized to make the game more recognizable (beyond in name and some in game mini games) while embracing modern aesthetics. I would have loved to have seen a humanoid protagonist design based on Yar (it's difficult to identify with a "fly") and develop Yar much as Nintendo has done with Mario is so common these days. Edit: “…is so common these days” was supposed to be “Girl protagonists are so common these days.” Not sure what happened 😆
I get that this isn't a game in the Recharged series, and that affords more creative freedom to the game and art designers. Kudos to Atari for trying. Keep going.

Credit to whoever's wearing the Atari cloak these days - they're still trying. Are they timeless? no; they're a business using a limited number of IP's most of which are over 40 years old and trying to make money with what they've got. The new games based on the old ones look pretty decent IMO (and I think the shift they did with Yars deserves some appreciation - who under the age of 50 will even know or care what yars revenge was and how does a platformer in the series spoil that?), and I don't see an issue with using anime style graphics (the word 'atari' is Japanese after all).

You argue your opinion well, but like most others commenting, I'm gonna chime in to say I disagree with it. Here's what *I* think: the original generation of Atari were fantastic games, but they were limited to an incredible degree by their hardware. All you had to do was look at the incredible, imaginative, whimsical box art and cartridge art to see what programmers and game designers of the 70s and 80s imagined the worlds of "Centipede" or "Adventure" or "Haunted House" could have looked like, had they been working with an infinite budget and more processing power than a home console made in the 1970s could provide. The games were often bone-simple and story-less because they **had** to be, not as a deliberate design choice.
We are finally in an era where it's not only possible but cost-effective to explore those ideas and imaginative worlds, flesh out the art, try new things, but retain the wonderful intuitive gameplay of the classics. Personally, I think that's fantastic and is something the original programmers who are still around are probably excited about any time they see it. You apparently don't like anime art, which is a preference and a valid one. (Personally, though, I do, and so do many older gamers -- you don't have to be born in the aughts to enjoy anime or art style that mimics it.)
And lastly, the old titles aren't going away. They will be sold and resold until the end of time on compilation collections, and I'm glad for that, too. I'm equally glad to see the Atari of 2024 putting a cool new coat of paint on a classic, and will be glad to see them do it again 10, 20, and 30 years from now, probably with completely different sets of ideas. It's a matter of addition, not replacement -- nothing is being lost, and something neat is being created with classic Atari as its core and base. That's worth celebrating!

  • @TheExistentialNerd

To start, everyone is allowed an opinion. However, I can not disagree more with your opinion. Yar's Rising doesn't look to be my type of game, even though I do enjoy a good metroidvania. Atari is a company, and it has a library of IP's that they can either make "more of" types of games, or explore new avenues to expand upon the IP with stories various concepts. To predict doom and gloom because of one game with an anime aesthetic is a bit much. Let's look at the recharge line of titles. They took all of the original IPs and found new and fun updates to the mechanics. They can't keep doing that with ALL of their games. If Yar's Rising isn't your thing, then play Yars' Revenge Recharged. If that isn't your thing, get Atari 50. If that isn't your thing, then I have NO idea what to tell you. Atari is a company that needs to grow a profit. Nostalgia is what Atari is capitalizing. New stuff is Infograms. Yars' Rising is stuff in this weird in between that feeds off of the nostalgia, but introduces something new. The current management really seems to understand their audiences and is willing to experiment to see what will work. That is a sign of stability and willingness to grow.

I actually don’t mind Atari to experiment more with their core franchises like this. Like how Namco & Tetris handle their IPs. For example, you can still have a game more faithful to the original arcade title, like Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and have something completely different like Pac-Man World. Tetris would be pretty stale if they didn't experiment with games like Tetris 99, Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris, etc.

After having played the demo at NextFest this year, I honestly think that the problem with Yars Rising is that it's just a bad genre/gameplay fit. WayForward games is known for doing the kinds of games that Rising is, and I can definitely say after having played it that it IS a pretty standard WayForward platformer with an Atari coat of paint slathered on it, regardless of the overall visual aesthetic being provided. If I'm being totally honest, even though I didn't personally have a good time with the game and think that it wasn't very fun to play, I'm glad that the current Atari is allowing independent developers to have access to their library of IPs to experiment with while they just act as the publisher/rights holder.
Atari is not the same entity that it was when it amassed most of its old guard audience. Hell, it's not even the same entity that it was when I was a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s, that was Hasbro. I think that the current entity to bear the name has landed on a reasonable venture that works without being too over the top, and while there will obviously be missteps because not everyone is going to see the same thing when presented with one of the company's IPs, I don't think that it's going to be ruinous.

I personally would have gone more old school in the case of a Yars game. I wonder what Howard Scott Warshaw , the original creator of Yars would think. It was such a unique game about a mutant fly of all things. Howard was such a tortured soul with negativity surrounding E.T. I would think they would wanted to do more with an iconic game. I could see some use of anime. Of course I can see trying to appeal to a younger generation. But I think it can be done in a better way to harken back to a purer style of Atari. After all Minecraft is very popular with many age groups, but looks more pixelated. We already have Berzerk Recharged which is not real reflection of the original. I don’t want to just see vintage names thrown around, without a legacy to them.

Wasn't the name Atari created to sound Japanese? The buttons on the Jaguar read right to left just like they do on the Nintendo. I don't think Anime aesthetic is inappropriate for this company considering these circumstances.
Although not a devout fan, I have watched anime in some form or another for over twenty years. That aesthetic has history in this country going back decades. Some American animators emulate it. This seems to be a matter of personal taste and not an issue of age.

Hopefully Atari will continue the hot streak that it is on.

I kind of feel like they switched the names around on games. Lunar Lander is Gravitar, Yars Rising is Major Havoc. What's funny is there is a gravitar recharged. I feel like Yars is the wrong type of game for the title. Yars is a top down shooter, not a Metroidvania (Which is something I think major havoc would have been a better IP for) I think Atari is trying too hard to have serious storylines, I would have made this game Major Havoc, but have the Major be a comical character that's full of himself, like a Buzz Lightyear with macho tropes. They could have still had a girl character with sensibilities (think Penny from Inspector Gadget) With Yars I would have leaned on Jeff Minter to reimagine it into something psychedelic and colorful with some throwback to the original style.

If Atari sticks to just retro games or remakes, only us gen x old guys are going to be interested. They do need to go in this direction to interest new players. These are games that my son will pick up and play as well as myself. Atari needs to modernize and interest players, otherwise it will stay the blackberry of phones while PlayStation and Xbox continue on as the iPhone and galaxy of the world.

When Atari released their own games they were made by in-house developers who didn't get paid sh1t and got no royalties for the games they made (sometimes single handedly) . Now they're made by independent developers who have the potential to be properly compensated for their work. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Zers love anime so that's a good move. What I REALLY want to see will NEVER happen but I would love to see new Atari hardware (that isn't an over priced PC) I would love to an Atari computer running a RISC-V chip and sold at the same price or thereabouts as Raspberry Pi 400 (wedge case Raspberry Pi). Atari badged and something that isn't made for nostalgia but something made to embrace the future.

I just doubt that new hardware of any sort would be able to compete and would be a money sink. The nostalgia route is the safe route. At the end of the day consoles are becoming less and less of a thing and game services will be the future. So I get why you say you'll never see it. It's too hard to break in and too late for there to be a future in it.
The kids love anime but I doubt they'll care about anime from Atari. I think their best bet is to focus on quality and fun. Play to their strengths. Thanks for the comment

Also i love wayfoward and what i do not understand is wayforward usually has its own distinct style, but in the yars game they ditched there own 16-bit style in favor of this "style".
Plus lets be real the yars rising game is "dollar general metroid dread" . Dont get me wrong i love metroid, but this is a blatent rip off of metroid dread.
Also why yars? Why not Trevor McFur, or some other jaguar property, yars just doesnt match. If it was a shoot em up i could see it but a metroid clone?

The whole premise of the video is "wrong" Atari doesn't exist and hasn't existed in decades. While I cannot really say anything about modern anime graphics, old "Actual Atari" embraced new technology as it came along.
Atari is a stylized font and logo and some IP. Even if Atari hadn't folded and been sold every few years, it still wouldn't be 80s Atari. Just as Chevy isn't the Chevy of the 1950s or even the 80s. There is probably less than 20 people working for Chevrolet today who worked in Chevrolet in 1980. It's a different company even though it never ceased.
There simply are not enough 50somethings who want to buy essentially skinned versions of our beloved 80s classics. Whether we like it or not, the people wearing the Atari skinsuit need a younger generation of people or it will fail.

I feel like there is a right and wrong way to do it. Solid gameplay with unique ideas and addictive attributes would be the best way to go. Probably cellphone games honestly. But trying to ride off what's popular is shallow and people aren't dumb. They don't want me too games and things that look like popular things. They want the popular things that the me too stuff is molded after.
As far as the video being wrong because Atari doesn't exist... Just no I'm not touching that

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 3 месяца назад +1

@@TheAtariNetwork I understand my view that Atari doesn't exist is unpopular, but it is true. Atari was broken up and sold off in the 80s. The 2600 part became Commodore with Jack owning it. Then it got sold off a few times before Hasbro got it. I think it got sold off again, not the company, mind you, but the IP.
A company is more than its legacy products and its name and logo. It's a company culture. It's a management and marketing style. More than anything, it's the people who work there. There is not a single person who works for "Atari" today who was involved with the 2600 at Atari.
As for the games, they changed. We don't like it, but they changed a long time ago. One thing you probably didn't notice, but I certainly did was the games you showed were loaded up with diversity, a plague on all modern games. My point is they cannot not exist in the modern era.

New Yars is Trash. Its basically just a poor graphics quality Side-Scroller, marketed with Old Yars... to try to get old school gamers to buy it. The reason why people like Anime, isnt really due to the Art style itself... but instead, the stories / imagination, voice acting, and MOST IMPORTANTLY... Actual depth of emotion / emotional content.
That said... What I see from Yars "artwork" , is not really "Anime". Its Rainbow Puke, and extremely low quality efforts. The Japanese anime's tend to be FAR more realistic and detailed. Look at something like Macross, and Robotech.. There are a Lot of very detailed mechs, and machines. The lighting isnt "Rainbow Glow" either. Its lighting and art direction, is again... far more matching real life lighting conditions.
Also, while I didnt spend much time watching the demo... I noticed the animation of the main character... as being very Artificial looking. Its a common issue with modern 3d animators... whom try to Insert WAY too many "Clean" frames into their animations... which makes the movements way too Unrealistic / Non-Human looking.
For example... quickly chop your arm through the air, as fast as possible. You wont see a very clear image of your arm, as you do it. You will see a "BLUR" of motion. Thats actual REAL Reality. Its how things are supposed to look, when they are moving at that kind of speed. But todays modern trash artists... will intentionally slow down that movement... and add a lot more non-blur frames... to try to make it as "Clean looking" and "Smoothed" as possible. It ends up looking awful... especially to artists that have an Eye for this stuff.
A good 2D animator, can produce FAR superior character animations. Animations that are believable, stylized, and evoke a level of Emotional expression... that these 3d artists, and poor quality amateur artists... cant even come close to matching.
In the end... these games end up looking like "FLASH" and "PHONE" games. Really poor quality. Too slow of a difficulty Ramp. Way too easy. And way too much "Special Effect", such as too many screen polluting objects + explosions + overly extreme lighting effects (to the point, where it can be difficult to even See your own character, and even know what the heck is going on).
The Original Yars wasnt the best game... and was largely a product of the Atari 2600's limitations. However, within that limited framework... it was a decent game for that system. The thing is Yars... is clearly a sort of Space Shooter... likely borrowing from the (superior) Arcade games: Starcastle, and Eliminator. Any version of a Sequel, should have retained that same kind of "Space Shooter" gameplay, and Look.
If they wanted to sell a Side Scroller, then they should have just made that, and sold it As a side scroller. Not tried to inject Yars into a side scroller... and changing the entire game type.
Its Bad Marketing tactics like this.. that Ruined Atari's Marble Madness Arcade Sequel. The marketing dept. thought it would be great, to make each marble have a face / personality. This made the game way too Cartoony... when the original was Realistic looking "Surrealism". Of course, that wasnt the only problem either. They removed the far SUPERIOR Trackballs... in favor of Joysticks. That reduced the players control over the balls vectors and speeds... while also removing the Challenge and Fun, that came from rolling a physical ball. Ive heard a lot of BOGUS EXCUSES about this... But IMO.. its all Lies. They simply wanted to cut Costs, so used dual sticks... because dual Trackballs are much more expensive ($10 Joysticks vs $100 Trackballs). As a result of destroying the games original Surrealism, and destroying the games control + challenge... it completely TANKED in its On-Site Arcade Test Runs... and, it was Permanently Shelved as a result.
Atari used to have some of the top level Programming and Designer Talents... and it was in those periods of time... when they created some of the most EPIC games, in all of Gaming History. However, as these talents left the company... and bad management + bad marketing teams infected the company... They started producing Inferior Crap... and went into a Deth Spiral, until their eventual Demise.
Rather than Learning a History lesson, and avoiding these issues... The "New Atari" is just copying the playbook from the period of Atari, that was failing.

    • @johndough8115
      @johndough8115 3 месяца назад

Btw - If you want to see an older, EPIC, Genesis game... that is ACTUALLY Inspired by Anime's like Robotech / Macross... then fire up a game of "Target Earth" (otherwise known as "Assault Suit Leynos", depending on the Region). You will see very detailed Ships, actual Anime characters in the cutscenes / communication sections, semi-realism in the movement and control of the Mech itself.. as well as realism in how weapons work (your own grenade explosions, can damage your own mech).
The FM Synth Music, and Sound Effects, are Incredible. And while the story is only injected here and there... Its a very cool, and powerful, tale.
Dont bother playing the modern Remake. Its full of garbage looking explosions... that ruin the entire game... let alone, many other inferior differences.
Also, the game is "80s Arcade Hard" level of Difficulty. Its not for the Casual Gamer / Modern Snowflake. But its well worth the Efforts. It has some of the most Unique creativity in its various challenges, within its various stages.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Atari isn’t popular. Atari has the budget of 3 IOU’s and a ham sandwich, sales are often around 1K-10K. People know Atari, but they don’t know Atari still makes games. Anime is cheap, looks good for new comers, and most importantly cheap. Yars’ rising gameplay actually looks fun, and most likely takes place years after the events of revenge. Qotiles either won and now are using yars’ as slaves and you have to expose them, or the Qotiles lost and are trying to secretly invade a more advanced earth.🌎
