Indie Games That Make Sense for the Atari VCS

- Today I'm going to be going over some indie games and homebrew that I think would fit nicely into the Atari VCS library. Some of them have that old school graphical style and gameplay, some would probably work well with the classic controller, and a few are just plain good. Just to note, these are not coming out on the VCS, this is just me talking about what would be cool to see on the console. Links to the games are below if you want to pick them up on steam or learn more about them...

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

The Atari vcs strong hold has got to be homebrew and indie titles. The vcs is literally a pixel king
I would love to see any of these in the VCS store..... I would love to see more developers making stuff for the VCS period.
@@tomevil6 agreed. I feel that Atari needs to pursue and make it worth their while. At this point make the publishing fees close to nothing just to fill out the store and push remaining stock. Just a thought
Bro you nailed this video right on the head. I’d buy 95% of what you mentioned here.
@@MrShuaTV I'm glad somebody agreed lol
This is what i want more of. Amazing indie titles. I think the VCS is a unique console for indie and retro a like with homebrew crossing the line between. Great video! I would love this to be a series and would def contribute suggestions
@@ObsidianContraption let's do it!
@@TheAtariNetwork 💪👾🕹️☕🎮🍻🥳
Great picks btw! I suggest Downwell, Satryn Deluxe, Twin Breaker, Rogue Sentry, Lunark, Unmetal, Spelunky
Limbo is a masterpiece. Love that game. I would buy it again on the VCS
@@ObsidianContraption right and I don't think the dev would have to spend much of anything to get it working
The Atari VCS Legacy deserves more improvement and most importantly, a more active marketing.
My VCS should be showing up within a week! It's coming with the PC MODE USB, on which I will install Steam and hopefully be able to play some of these
Great point and these are some great games to try on the VCS PC mode! Let me know if you get any to work and thanks for watching!
@@TheAtariNetwork ill update the Discord. I have tons of indie titles in the Steam library. And they're all Linux ports.
I want a VCS with physical media as a Evercade Competitor. Maybe release it in different shells like a Jag Duo or Panther. I would.get that in a heartbeat.
@@paul329 not a bad idea. Evercade seems to be doing alright
I plan on purchasing an Atari VCS at some point in the near future. Need to save up some cash to get one, I have had other stuff on my priorities list lately, like an Atari 5200 flash cart that I bought last week lol But soon! I hope more of these games end up on it!
@@KrunchyTheClown78 did you get the Atari Max or is there another flashcart?
@@TheAtariNetwork the atarimax
@@KrunchyTheClown78 awesome mine works great. Very much worth it!
@@TheAtariNetwork Nice, looking forward to getting it!
Great premise for a video. Hopefully Atari will listen.
Thanks. Idk it was something fun and different. Especially since Mr genxgrownup took my idea to analyze the fatal run 2089 trailer lol
@@TheAtariNetwork the ancient rivalry continues...
@@TheAtariNetwork You still could have done it. Different content creator, different take.
@@cyrollanthis made me laugh harder than it should've
@@braillynnyeah after watching his videos the takes aren't so different. It was a short teaser there isn't much to talk about anyway. I'd rather make sure people have different content to watch and not a lot of stuff other people have done
I used my classic controller to play FAITH on steam, its a blast!
@@Jmldy-yp6op that's awesome to hear!
Faith is an incredible series with so many vibes. Love it!
The vcs should be the demo machine for there real money maker, the 2600/7800.
Oh and great video you knocked it out of the park once again.
@@rameybutler-hm7nx thank you
A couple of tips for a VCS release: anything from the Kingdom series ("Two Crowns" and "Eighties" are the latest and greatest; the former has a great local and network coop mode and the latter would greatly fit the target audience with its theme), and perhaps Crimsonland, an older title that I still enjoy till this day.
Thank you for sharing your opinion 😊
@@arthurmonie I mean, it's what I do. Lol thanks for watching, it's always appreciated!
Nice Video!!! Also, CAVE STORY MENTIONED ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
@@Its_PacFan love cave story!
I've been testing Steam indies in PC-Mode. Ultros would be amazing on the VCS. Gris is another good one. In terms of old school games, I think some retro racers like 80s Overdrive or Formula Retro Racing would make stellar additions.
I've been pushing for Adventure 2 5200 for a while now!
I did not even exist during the Atari era but this little pc-console has been intriguing me a lot, I feel like Atari doesn't really market this at all bc I hadn't seen it till last week! I wanna release games on it too, hope it's not too much of hassle to get on as a developer with them
@@KolLeviathan it's not difficult at all to get games on the VCS as far as I've heard. And I agree, they haven't done a great job marketing this thing.
Would love to see the bit trip series on vcs.
Fans helped to bring many games to the VCS800 by simply asking the developers to port the games over, so my advice would be to contact the developers of these games
Ask current VCS800 devs to give their experiences developing for the platform to help encourage new devs over to the console.
Super Star Shooter 16 is on the console because of this approach.
Their games get noticed on the VCS800 and are not lost on Steam.
The VCS800 is the perfect place for indie devs to get wider exposure.
I would think Stardew Valley would be a no-brainer for the VCS, considering it's on just about every other platform known to man. Outside of that, Limbo is a good suggestion.
@@saurondp I've heard of stardew valley but never looked into it or tried it. I'll have to investigate it, thanks for the suggestion!
I think the atari VCS could be a chance for unknown indie game(for example in those you cited, i would rather think to faith that vampire survivor, braid and inside who already took their place on the chess) who get their game flooded in the ocean of games on steam and could take the VCS as a chance to shine and possibly ramp(for example i truly started to interest to the promising brazilian dev 2nd boss thank to the vcs, deciding to get savage halloween and later wild dogs) for popularity. Sadly very few take the travels, and even in those who announced their attention of develop rarely seem to go to the end like roasty buds special brew, super 3D maze 16, fx-unit yuki - the recode, El Panadero the baker, wyvia a hack and slash action rpg, murtop, retro knock-out vanillabeast, PolyGunR, the spirit of the samurai, SPGP, clasherball or games that could be adapted to it like satrin deluxe or teppo and the secret ancient city
Thanks 😊
@@ronm6585 your so appreciative. Thank you!
The VCS is supported by Unity and can run programs that can be compiled for Debian Linux. The effort to port games, especially from Unity which handles the low level hardware, seems fairly trivial. And with developers getting an 80-88% cut of sales, making games available on the platform, even with its small install base, doesn't seem like a huge ask. Why not reach out to those featured and tell them you'd like to see their games on the system so they can look into the feasibility?
@@dyscotopia not a bad idea
Don't own a VCS but would love it if they ported DUSK '82 to the 2600 or 7800
@@southtexasatlatl oh I'll have to look into that. Thanks
Faith is a 2600-like game? Never heard that, i thought it's a native C64 game, and from way back then
Fatal Run :2089, It looks like it belongs on the Atari VCS
@@catholicactionbibleonlyist1813 and yet it might not make it to the VCS at all
The problem with the VCS800 is that it wasn't intended to be a game console!
It was, and I don't care what VCS800 fanboys say, marketed as a branded P.C. with a loose ATARI front end.
All of the games that were promised for the VCS such as Spirit of the Samurai were always marketed as multi-platform games, so ATARI had very little intention to re-enter the console war they can't afford to compete in.
What we are seeing with the VCS now is what it should have been when it was released.
ATARI, indie, and ATARI retro.
The great thing is that the ATARI OS can migrate in the future.
Right now, ATARI is trying to build a new fanbase, so restricting their games to one system seems very reckless.
We know that ATARI will keep supporting the VCS800 going forward, so I think we'll see a few of these on the VCS800 eventually.
Bit Trip x Classic controller.
@@metronome8471 what's bit trip I'm not sure I know that one...
@@TheAtariNetwork it's a retro inspired collection that started on Wii. They were also to develop Super Breakout for the Amico.
Which AA games you think would make sense on VCS??
“…several hours of enjoyment…” 😂 You are now known for your extreme hyperbole in my mind. Stop exaggerating so much!
I’m sorry to say for the 1st time I had to give your video a thumbs down as I strongly disagreed with the 1st 7 minutes of this video. To each their own.
@@brotherblue3340 it happens. Thanks for checking it out regardless.
I reeeaaally wish SNK 40th anniversary came out for the VCS with classic joystick support. Guerrilla War Ikari Warriors Time Soldiers ect those would work perfect with the VCS classic controller.
@@m1rock that would be awesome
I tried running Ikari Warriors via mame in PC mode with the classic controller but couldn't get it to work well enough. Left it in mame library in hopes mame might eventually adequately recognize the classic controller
