I found a Hokins & Allen Off-Hand model in a Cival War shop. It was out of their usual line of interest and missing the nipple and ram-rod so I got a good deal on it. I polished the bore with a bit of red metal finishing pad to smooth up the bore and reduce the fouling. It is 45 caliber as most offhand were. The ball goes exactly where the front sight happens to be when the gun goes off. A good rifle for left handed shooters.
I built one of those from scratch. Bought the hammer trigger and guard (spring) and wood from Numerich many years ago. Took a piece of round stock and had a shop bend it in their press. Machined the slot and drilled/tapped the holes. Did the breech and used a Green Mountain 40 cal barrel. Won a lot of matches with it. Simple rugged design. That is some gorgeous wood. Need to pick you up a range rod for the range. I am sure you know what happens to your hand if a ramrod breaks. You can hear that 54 ball hit the target. Think you may have a problem with fouling?
Utterly beautiful firearm, in all respects. Magnificent . Before filing the front sight,I would see how it prints close up say 13 yards as recommended by author/hunter Sam Fadala, that works for me.
what twist barrel? you out west?? the american pioneer i had turned to a brick..(i'm in east tennessee).. really draws moisture from everything i could gather?? i would swab a little between shots instead of more grease. looks like a great shooting rig!!
SHE'S A BEAUT ... WHAT NICE WOOD IT HAS ,MAPLE ?WHATEVER IT IS , IT IS NICE... I HAD TWO THOMPSON CENTERS HAWKENS ,1 IN 45 AND THE OTHER WAS IN 50...THAT WAS BACK WHEN THESE EYES COULD SEE WITHOUT LENSES.. IN THE .50 ,THINK I USED 75-85 GRAINS OF PYRODEX ,(I DON'T RECALL)WITH THE T/C MAXI BALL .AT 100 YARDS WAS ABOUT 2" HIGH ..BACK THEN WITH THE .50 I DID NOT NEED A SPOTTING SCOPE TO SEE THE HOLES IN THE PAPER..THE .45 SHOT GREAT ,BUT I ALWAYS LIKED THE .50 CAL BETTER AS IT GROUPED ABOUT 2 INCHES AT 100 YARDS 5 SHOT GROUP.. THAT WAS EARLY 1981 OR 2 .. I LOVE MUZZLE LOADERS / BLACK POWDER WEAPONS .. THAT UNDER HAMMER IS A SWEET PIECE OF WORK.. STAY SAFE C.D. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES
Would you mind sharing what stain you used on that wood ? Did you use true oil and steel wool or any sealer ? That turned out great. Was there a lot of sanding and metal work fit ? I like how you browned the barrel. What products were used ? I'm a ND native living in AK but want to move back down there, miss the waterfowl hunting and pheasant.

happy thanksgiving cave dweller dumb question you ever have a hard time while hunting keeping the primer on the nipple? just wondering beings its upside down never seen one before quite interesting
What an interesting gun. I've never seen an under hammer, but it looks wonderfully primitive, and simple. Which is usually a good thing when it comes to reliability, and with that wood? A little classy too. You said it comes in a kit? I was thinking of buying one of those Hawken kits and finishing it myself, just for fun, but this may be something more unique.
If you think that one is unusual there is also one called a "mule ear " rifle. It has a side hammer lock. I bought one from Dixie many years ago in 50 cal. Fun to shoot.
Had one in .45 back in the day. Still love muzzle loaders.
Beautiful wood on that .54 Thank for for posting sir - I always look forward to your videos

I have a Pacific Rifle Co. Zephyr .62 cal underhammer. Absolutely gorgeous rifle that's a joy to shoot.
I was looking at Pacific's when I decided to build this one. VERY nice rifles.
I've never really given underhammers a second look, I'm intrigued now though.
Beautiful wood and underhammer.
Dang .
That is a sweet lookin rifle .
Congrats
What a unique rifle never saw that one

I have a .45 H&A Underhammer myself. The previous owner shortened the barrel to 22", but it's still a good accurate "Buggy Rifle".
I have one of those kits and 50 Cal it shoots real well the ignition on those under hammers super fast a good hunting game

1 in 60" twist and I'm in South Dakota.
That is a super cool gun. And beautiful. Are those the crossed sticks featured in your "Best Sticks Ever Made" video?
They are the sticks.
I love it. Realy love it!

Interesting video , they look a lot of work for 1 shot , but would be something I'd like to get into.
Amazing....people used to do this to shoot....those are big holes in that target....
Used to do this to shoot??? We still do!!
Always a great video! Very cool rifle!
I would be interested to see what this gun would do on Dogtown.
I have wanted one of these guns for years but cannot find one.
I think it's a --You want one, You build one situation.
Pecatonica has parts kits.
I see you put the fore stock back on.
Is that a historic design?
Your good now .. shooter fatigue
Nice rifle!👍🏾😀❤️🇺🇸

If you have a good fitting cap, they stick on the nipple really tight.
Take it to the dog hills !!!
