I read Dennis Cooper through the 90s and early 2000s. When Sluts came out he was at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books and I got to hear him speak on a panel and meet and get my copy of the book signed, it was a dream come true. Unfortunately, I haven’t read much by him the last decade plus, and you don’t usually hear much about him either. I’m so happy you, and now perhaps others will discover him, he’s a singular voice that needs to be heard and a fearless writer. So kudos to you for bringing him to Booktube and giving him a prominent place on your list.

How do you guys make time reading books and keeping up with a full-time job? I work in a call-centre, and by the end of the shift, I'm both physically and mentally exhausted. I dont like my job, but I need an income. I don't have other skills, which is why I stay in this frightening job.
If my job was not that stressful, I would have spend the whole day reading. But I just cannot find the time to do so because I need to be constantly up to date with with new material at work, otherwise I get screamed at by customers if I don't know their answer to their question.

I’m so glad I decided to pick up The English Understand Wool after hearing you rave about it! It’s definitely making it’s way on my list of best books of 2022 too, such a witty and smart novella that lives rent free in my mind. I can’t stop thinking about it and I need to check out more of DeWitt’s work! So, a massive thank you for giving it the attention it deserves aha!

It’s so interesting how your opinion of Catherine Lacey has evolved. I’ve only read Pew so I want to read The Answers after hearing you discuss it. I think she has a new novel out later this year, right?
Great wrap up of your favourites 📚

One of my favorite non fictions is “nothing to envy: ordinary lives in North Korea”
And since you have a law degree- do you know any books about international law?

Unfortunately not too well versed in legal nonfiction! As for fiction, I really loved Intimacies by Katie Kitamura

My book of the year was Against the Loveless World. And the prize I'm most looking forward to is the Portico prize, longlist released in September

Such a great list! I've added The English understand wool, Middlemarch and The Swimmers to my tbr. I loved Lapvona too - you might enjoy my favourite book of the year, Where I end by Sophie White - they're very different books but both dark and definitely push boundaries! Looking forward to hearing about the books you read in 2023 :)

I really want to thank you for this great upload of recommendations. Your explanations/reviews are well thought out and straight forward without giving away too much of the story. Whoever does your editing gets a shout out to. Will be checking some of your older posts. You mentioned a few new authors that I would like to look into. I also appreciate you including honorable mention books. I feel bad for those authors that write stories that people love but get passed over with the “limit” of top 10 on these types of postings. Cheers! 😊🎉

Thanks for the Sidik Fofona rec, I loved secret lives of church ladies and have been looking for more short story collections like it so it's perfect.

I cannot wait to see what amazing things you do in the coming year! Love you and this channel! Happy New Year, Jaylen!

Such a great list! I finally picked up Post-Traumatic in December and I loved it so so much, made my top 10. Hard to pick a fave for the year but it's a toss up for me between Love Songs of W.E.B Du Bois and Brown Girls (which I think is criminally underrated).

Another thoughtful and great video! I didn't have the greatest reading year but the ones that stand out are: The Rabbit Hutch, Earthlings by Sayaka Murata, Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite and two plays- Cruise by Jack Holden and Bloodshot by Elinor T Vanderburg.
