I agree with your interpretation. He looks frightening, but he's actually a positive force. He is the Sandman, living under the children's pillow. Demons, nightmares creep from the basement at night, so he sings until dawn to keep them away, to be a light in the firmament. This fight comes with a price: the scars, the burning heart...He's an emotional sponge absorbing the fears so they don't reach the children, but it is of course painful to fight this fight.

Ich liebe diese Piano-Version auch sehr. Rammstein lässt immer bewusst viel Interpretations-Spielraum bei den Texten, spielt mit der deutschen Sprache und mit Emotionen, die Musik und die Bühnenshow sind genial ... und genau das macht diese Band so einzigartig und wertvoll.
Did you notice it? At the very end as the lights are fading the white smoke? I believe the white smoke/mist you see in the very end as the lights slowly go off was his spirit/Soul.
I think that he was finally able to ascend...after making sure all the children were safe and at the same time atoning for his past sins he was finally set free.
The original was released in 2001 then the piano version in 2012 so it follows the story from Till in the orphanage to protecting the kids and the emotions he shows is mainly anger followed by sadness then in the piano version his emotions are more sadness and regret kinda bitter sweet..He realizes he had to do things he didn't want to do to save the children. So now that he's done, he is finally set free. thats of course my own interpretation of the video/song❤️🔥🤗

This piano version is quite different than the other official video - even though the lyrics are the same. But sound, video, and the vibe are something else. It's worth looking at, too. My interpretation is that Till incorporates the personification of the pain itself, not a demon, nor a savior. But who knows, it's Rammstein. 🤷♂
'Nun liebe Kinder, gebt fein Acht' = Now dear children, pay attention........'Ich bind die Stimme aus dem Kissen' = I am the voice from the pillow'..........Till portrays the "Sandman", who has the power to deliver children from the monsters in their nightmares OR allow their terror to continue until the 'bright light shines from Heaven' in the morning ( ein heller Schein am Firmament ).....while terrifying, the Sandman actually cares for children, which explains the sadness and tears while he sings......and why his smile is so painful.......'Mein herz brennt' = my heart burns........

Many will not agree with your interpretation ... for me you see it right! ... You also have to see the version with the group. (amazing !! and which brings a new vision of things) whatever the interpretation of the text, this musical piece as well as the other version are for me great artistic moments that no other metal band can even imagine reaching!
I interpret, this version more so than the original video, very much like you. And it fits very well with the reference to the, as you said, Sandmann from the 1800's ETA Hoffmanns's Der Sandmann, wherein the Sandmann is a rather tragic figure, afaik (haven't read it). Going by Tills acting, he really portrays a tragic character, imo.

He is the anti-sandman, it's his nature to bring nightmares to children, it's just what he is. BUT..... he doesn't like it (which is why his heart burns). Eternal struggle of not liking what he is, but is unable to change.
Just my thoughts.
Please take a look at the original full band version of Mein Herz Brennt. The video has a LOT more imagery and the music with strings is epic.
Actually, I have a different interpretation: he is a dark sandman who lives on children's tears. The fairies and the others are his helpers. He makes sure they don't overdo it, so he's a Guardian too, but he still cares about the whole situation. The sandman is a tormented soul (like the "Engel" or the character in "Ich tu dir weh" or in "Mutter", "wie gern hab ich die Frauen geküsst") who suffers from his nature, but on top of that unable to change it. The song is scary but in my opinion the main emotion is despair and sadness. Interestingly, it's always him who gets the pain, even when he's doing "f**** algebra" in his solo rap song "Mathematics." This tells a lot about Till
The full band version is darker, has a general meaning but is also based on real events. This version is more about consolation, but catches the creepiness of the main video. You should review it, too.

Erpressen in this instance does not mean blackmail -- but instead translates directly to "to press [together]/squeeze". So in other words it is "With this heart, i have the power to [close/squeeze/press together] your eyelids".
The location for this video was the Belitz sanatorium near Berlin (built 1905-1907). This was a neurological clinic for tuberculosis patients in Eastern Germany, which was later used by the Russians as a military base. Today the large site and its buildings are empty and are often used as a filming location for TV and music productions! There were many sanitary facilities in the buildings, including clinical bathrooms that were used by patients. This explains the depression in the ground that can be seen in the video. The Sandman is a figure from Germanic mythology, in modern Danish it is the figure of Ole Lukøje and in Scandinavian it is the figure of Jon Blund.
In its original form, it is the mediator and companion between the realm of the dead and the living, because in mythology sleep was a state that allowed access to the realm of the dead.
Hey man those cuts on his arms and chest are real. When you get a look at him sleeveless or completely shirtless after this video was recorded, you can see the scars.

Hio like you already noticed from the comments this song has 2 versions and BOTH are increadibal in ther own way the normal version and this piano version i reccoment to react alsow to the oficial video of the normal version and maibe you will change your interpretation on this song (i won´t spoil but it has a slightly different atmosphere even it is still spooky)
