I have the P0442 code. The mileage is the same. I checked the gas cap and wiped out the codes. I guess if it comes back, I will put a piece of black electrical tape over the check engine light.

While it might temporarily silence the annoying light, it's like ignoring a warning sign on your car's dashboard. The P0442 code indicates a problem with your vehicle's evaporative emissions system. This system is crucial for preventing fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere, which can harm the environment and potentially affect your car's performance and fuel economy.
Potential Consequences of Ignoring the P0442 Code
Environmental Impact: Unchecked fuel vapors contribute to air pollution.
Reduced Fuel Economy: A leak in the EVAP system can cause your car to consume more fuel.
Engine Damage: In severe cases, a persistent EVAP leak can lead to engine damage.
Failed Emissions Test: You might fail your next emissions test, preventing you from renewing your vehicle registration.
      Next Steps
Retest the Gas Cap: Even though you've already checked it, double-check for any damage or wear. A faulty gas cap is a common cause of the P0442 code.
Inspect for Visible Leaks: Look for any cracks, holes, or loose connections in the EVAP system components, including hoses, lines, and the charcoal canister.
Use an OBD-II Scanner: If you have one, you can use it to gather more specific information about the P0442 code. This might help pinpoint the exact issue.
Consult a Mechanic: If you're unable to diagnose the problem yourself, it's best to have a professional inspect your vehicle.
Remember, addressing the underlying issue is essential for both environmental and vehicle health.
Would you like to know more about the possible causes of the P0442 code or how to diagnose it further?

@@weeklytools Most of my gas engines are designed with a fuel tank VENT. One more won't hurt anything.

Hello, we just changed the canister purge valve but the check engine light is still on. If I don’t have a scanner should I wait a few days for the light to go away itself ?

Unfortunately, waiting for the check engine light to go away on its own isn't recommended.
While it's possible that the light might reset after a few drive cycles, it's more likely that there's an underlying issue causing the light to stay on.
Why You Need to Diagnose the Issue
Safety: The check engine light often indicates a problem that could affect your vehicle's performance or safety.
Emissions: Issues related to the EVAP system (which includes the canister purge valve) can contribute to increased emissions.
Fuel Efficiency: Problems in this system can impact your vehicle's fuel economy.
What to Do Without a Scanner
While a scanner would provide the most accurate diagnosis, there are some basic checks you can perform:
Tighten the Gas Cap: A loose gas cap can trigger the check engine light for EVAP system issues. Ensure it's securely tightened.
Inspect for Damage: Check the hoses and connections related to the canister purge system for any visible damage, leaks, or disconnections.
Seek Professional Help: If you're unable to identify the issue, it's best to consult a mechanic. They have the tools and expertise to diagnose the problem accurately.
Remember: Ignoring the check engine light can lead to more serious problems and potentially expensive repairs.
Would you like to know more about common EVAP system issues or how to find a reliable mechanic?

You should at minimal hook an OBD to your car and clear the code, but I would follow the exact line from your gas tank to the evac canister to the valve to the intake to be sure you haven't got any cracked lines.

Disconnect the battery wait 5 minutes then connect it again, if it’s what your problem was it won’t come back on if it does come back on after driving for awhile check your cats
