In my opinion: The Eddi Lang Jazz Festival deservs to have Guthrie Govan - Guthrie Govan deservs to be an active part of Eddi Lang Jazz Festival ... both offer outstanding musical events - milestones in artwork - a firework of fun & inspiration! ... Thanks & Cheers from Austria ... I really enjoy most of your videos! Move on! Good luck!
My favourite Guthrie stuff is with Seth playing bass… nothing about psychic sibling connection here, he’s just a really great bass player with that dark bass tone that goes so well with GG’s Suhr rig.
@TheIzkool fusion is a big word, if you went and spoke about fusion to, say, a jazz saxophonist they'd think of something along the lines of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham or Weather Report. That's what is traditionally thought of as fusion, which was meant to be about blending different styles (jazz, rock, blues, world music, indian-classical, etc.) and making something fresh happen. That being said, people like Govan and Jeff Beck are fusion players (on the rockier side), Allan Holdsworth and Sco are fusion players (on the jazzier side), to me, playing 'fusion' doesn't necessarily mean playing a 'Holdsworth/Gambale'-esque solo. (on a side note, some respected musicians like Scott Henderson and Lee Ritenour have praised Govan's playing)
Why is Guthrie even regarded as being a "jazz fusion" guitarist? I mean all of is soloing sounds straight up Steve Vai rock. He's more of a rock guitarist than anything else. I'm tired of people saying that he is mostly fusion. No he is not. I swear, every solo I see him do is instrumental rock with a hint of fusion and blues.
TheIzkool Steve Vai wishes he'd sound like that. just because he uses tapping, doesn't make him Vai-sounding. Guthrie 's playing is way more free when it comes to dissonance, odd time signatures, harmonic diversity etc. I mean, he's no Pat Metheny or Joe Pass, and he's definitely more a rock player than a jazz player, but the influences are there. If anything he's more like Zappa on steroids.
You have good ears. Guthrie Govan is not plaing Jazz at all, its just major scale. He should contact a real jazz player like eks. martijn van iterson to learn jazz or a thousand others who really can play jazz. The problem is that average people cant here that he sucks in jazz. He should stay in rock like jeff Beck. He really sucks in jazz.
steinetakorgroovy jazz is boring no one of those guitarists you mentioned can much the technical abilities of Guthrie . jazz is very limited and overrated
He's good in terms of technique but his sense of style is very poor. If you go to any jazz gig nobody ever does a solo where they just play as fast as possible for 20 seconds. He is probably very gifted but needs to learn about style to be a proper PRO player
Guthrie's brother Seth Govan on bass. The drummer is Pete Riley. The sax player is Zak Barrett.
I love Guthrie in this line up .... brother on bass .... one hell off a drummer and sax player ...very special connection going on here !
This whole performance blew me away. No one plays that solo but Guthrie.
His rhythm too

Guthrie just seems to get better and better. Thank you for sharing this.

They seem to say that there's no money in Jazz but surely this lineup would(!)

the new envololpe pedal sounds like shit
The stage =0
With all respect to Govan, but the guitar effect that he used in this one (intro) sounds horrible.
Why do people think this guy is so amazing I just don't see it or hear it but ultimately don't feel it.
