  • Well, Andrew got himself in a pickle again - working a sound gig in some mysterious town without ANY of his normal expendables kit! Naturally, he took to the dollar store...
    This episode is here to show you some creative workarounds for all of your traditional expendables in case you ever find yourself in a pinch. We do NOT recommend any of these techniques over the professional gear that is obviously designed to serve this purpose, but it's good to know that other options exist. Enjoy and let us know what you want to see next on Sound 101!
    Recommended expendables:
    URSA foamie: amzn.to/3d5U3Ro
    URSA ankle strap: amzn.to/3JwJmU8
    Undercovers: amzn.to/3d5UjQm
    Moleskin: amzn.to/3QgPh1W

    The majority of industry professionals and people inside the business are going to punish and critique you for not using the expensive-pro equipment, videos like this make me happy because they normalize not having hundreds of dollars to spend in expensive equipment, what counts is your ability to use your tools at hand! Great content

    Great video as usual. I suggest the following videos, Firstly, Tips for Houses of Worship, "mic-ing" up pastors, or participants in a play -Christmas / Easter Show etc. bearing in mine that their spaces usually have less in terms of sound treatment. Secondly, microphones for teachers, the V-LAV ,Deity VO-7U and the Deity Pocket Wireless come to mind. Blended classrooms are now common place and teachers need to have good audio for the tutorial videos they make or for the videos they record in their classes for students who may be absent and since sound is at least 50% of a good video, it cannot be overlooked. Bonus idea, how to capture audio for a basketball, baseball other game at school where students are the commentators and we include sounds from the court and players for live broadcast. This could help for schools with Media Programs and clubs.

    Using the BP-TRX to send over a dual mono audio (left - timecode, right - music) for music videos or choreography.
    BP-TRX 01 - Master TX - input: iPad showing a video with timecode and left-timecode right-music audio
    BP-TRX 02 - Camera HOP to Timecode Slate
    BP-TRX 03 - Camera HOP to Camera A - Camera with Timecode input with automatic timecode jamming (Blackmagic Pocket or URSA)
    BP-TRX 04 - Camera HOP to Camera B - Camera with no Timecode (Sony a7) - will use LTC that can be used in post
    BP-TRX 05 - Speaker - output to a TRS to TR/TS, so only the music will be played in the speaker
    I did something similar to this (scaled down) using the BP-TRX Deluxe kit. Everything synced perfectly in post!

    Here is an idea for a future episode. Top 10 or top 5 most creative sound tips you learned from other technicians. The spirit of this idea is that sound guys are usually alone and have to figure things out on their own. So when they meet you will hear creative solutions to problems. For example. My boom pole is held up by a mono pod. It was so cool to hear about your painters pole solution on one of your episodes later.

    Love the content! It would be awesome to hear from pro’s - why you would use a shotgun vs a lav. Is it important to always have both and which mic gets more use in the final mix. I honestly hate the way lavs sound, but maybe I’m doing something wrong in the final mix?

    • @joellouisfire
      @joellouisfire Год назад

      I find that more and more productions are using lavs in their final edit, whether it's events, documentary, commercial or narrative. I've learned that the lav that you use makes the difference, like a DPA 6060 or in that tier have a great sound and very usable in a mix. People are getting more and more used to that "clean" and dry sound from a lav, but it always differ from production to production. I agree with you, I really want to hear from industry pros on this subject.

    Between Andrew and Curtis Judd, I've learnt so much about getting better sound, but it takes a bit of time to go through it all. As a trainer that needs to run hybrid classes now, a sound 101 about live capture for use during a class/training session might be a good idea. I do remember Andrew making a streaming video with an HD-TX at one point and Ted from Indie doing the v.lav set, but not much for the needs of live classes.

    • @DeityMicrophones
      @DeityMicrophones  2 года назад

      Multi-tier answer incoming:
      1) could be your 3.5mm extension cable is getting close to a 120/240V power cord, or close to an AC to DC power supply.
      2) Could be the shielding on the extension cable isn't very good. We recommend +90% shielded cables, and cables that are double shielded for durability.
      3) Could be that your cable is coiled and creating a magnetic field that is picking up RF static in the air. Seen this with intercom XLR cables that accidentally will turn into passive radio and pickup radio frequencies. We uncoiled our neat cable management piles into a spaghetti mess and it preventing it from creating a magnetic field.
