Seriously, nothing comes close to Tom's original. He's the master at creating a sense of place and atmosphere. No offence to Rod who made the track a hit, but Tom is the real artist here.
This is Rod in full Al Jolson mode. He's probably miming as most performers do in their videos , but this is about the performance...I will always prefer Tom's less histrionic but spartan version and his own arty video of his song, but Rod was always up for a bit more showbiz histrionic theatrics. In any case , Tom wins every way on all those various cover versions and lovely royalties ,as any great songwriter might appreciate.
Yeah, the full moon is important ; ) No one comes close, in my opinion, to Tom's original. I threw my hat in the ring also and covered it in a similar vein to Tom Waits. I covered quite a few of Tom's songs. Good luck
Hello sir rod I know the gal that has been doing the canopies and stuff on the beach or a long time and I know you have been there for a while as well I have a crazy cool van and I love you so much I'd love to meet you one day and I support you in court and anywhere I can come and be an armored guard for you I would guard you with my life
I heard Rod Stewart got the idea when Bob Seger said - I'm going to record it on my next album, so Rod beat him to it. Outside of Waits perfromance, Patty Smith's is the next best, because it does it in a different style. No point in trying to Ballad out Waits. That being said, what kept me from being pissed off at your click bait title was seeing Johhny Cash at the end, as I fast forwarded looking for the best Tom Wait's cover.
After Rodney plays Tom Wait's "Downtown Train" we are into a Van Morrison gig from the early 199os as far as I can recall.... which he starts with one of his songs that Rod also recorded. later on .."Have i told You Lately that I love you?"....these pieces were originally on some of my old VHS video tapes which i ran onto DVDs...
Well ..let's consider the facts.Tom wrote the song and recorded his version which has a whole lot of soul , grit, regret and atmospheric colour in his poetic words, music and arrangement. Rod...an excellent performer in his own right, did a great and different version based on Tom's model , because he obviously loved the song and appreciated what Tom had done .Rod has also covered some great Dylan songs at times. He knows a great song. when he hears one .He has written some songs himself, but is essentially a performer and interpreter of songs. He tends to be a bit histrionic but I don't mind that at all ..especially in this video version .Either way we can enjoy both versions and many others and in the end the profits and proceeds trickle into Tom's bank account....which is as it should be. because he is the creator.
@@2paddykool I don't like Rod's version at all, it's karaoke at best! My version even blows Rod's version away, listen: ruclips.net/video/BsVY3hPvV5k/видео.html It's Tom's song through and through and he's the master of his own art, END OF STORY!

Rod would agree
@@JAMAICADOCK Ditto, yes absolutely he would
Great performance. I also like the Mary Chapin Carpenter version.

I like Tom's better too, especially when it's a "fool moon".

It still amazes me when people say hi to performers in their comments... like talking back to a TV😂

he's miming
Van Morrison has embraced jam band jazz in his later years. He deserves at least some air play.
The Man,! has written songs that cover, All Genres. He is one MIGHTY !!!Songwriter and Performer.
@@roymoulton4537 ...and he's still going strong , producing excellent albums aplenty and in great vocal shape.
Sorry Tom Waits is the best . Love Rod but he blows chunks on this song.

Tom must have been so pissed
Although if i had written this song i would be psyched
Hahaha.. it’s just rod karaoke
This is the elevator music version of a great poetic song.
But then, then world is full of lemmings falling into step
i'm sure Tom laughed all the way to the bank with those royalties!
why, He wrote and does the song better.
What the hell is the second video? First one is Rod Stewart but the second is another song.
