That flag meant nothing to us other than the part of the country that the baddest rock and roll in the country came from. We were long haired freaks and more liberal than most people.
Have you seen our great flag flying high over the tops of S.C. pine trees at the off ramp of Hwy.221 onto I-85 Business towards Greenville,S.C. and the new I-85 ? In Spartanburg,S.C. !!! Huge Battle Flag ! And thanks to RUclips for posting Black Oak Arkansas' Dixie .

I was a rising senior from Florida, visiting relatives and we went to this concert!
We "sat" right in front, half way between the stage and the bleachers! Oh man! This was the best concert ever! We got there Friday before it started and stayed til the very end!

NASCAR has banned all displays of the Confederate flag at their events and venues, so what Jim Dandy is doing in this video would get him evicted from the premises today. Strange days. It didn't offend anyone for over 140 years, now it does? Bullshit.
I love reading the comments; the 70s were awesome. Gosh 40+ years ago. I loved the long hair, hip huggers, bell bottoms, halter tops - and the companionship we all had with one another. Fun times for sure! So many concerts, mostly outdoors. A lot of them had several bands; festivals. From 45 to album, reel to reel, 8-track and cassette. And we had Jim Dandy to the Rescue :)
+KCinTX I think out of all the things you mentioned that I loved, I miss the companionship the most. We were all ready to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it and befriend anyone we met. The 70's were awesome and we lived through one of the greatest times ever! Do any of you here belong to the Facebook group? I went there too, got there a week a head of time. We were on the road hitch hiking from the Sedalia, Mo. concert.
We stayed in the vegetable stand right across from the speedway. That was our home from the 9 days we were there.
We had no money so we hired on to set up a huge circus tent at the speedway. The tent turned out to be the biggest head shop I've ever seen.
The radio station from the area, the head D.J. set up and donated his house for the many people around there for people to sleep, eat and party. It was a cool thing to do and everyone there respected his property for the few hundred that used it.
Some really cool bands played there. I just remember a few. Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the Almond Brothers.

My first concert, I'll never forget it! I went to see Marshall Tucker, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and most of all the Allman Brothers and was looking forward to Black Oak too. BOA spiked the energy of that crowd more than any other act!!!!
I was there too. Biggest concert Charlotte ever had. It was August and so hot.
Days of long since past but Dixie will always be in my heart.
I really wish all the members of Black Oak Arkansas were friends again, especially Tommy Aldridge. They are ALL brothers, you know!!

My childhood was radically changed after finding their album in my best friend's mom's collection.

These guys were a little ahead of my time and there time as well but they were true Rock and Rollers all around. I love there music to this day. Does anyone out there think they should be given consideration for the Rock and Roll hall of fame ? They get my vote.

We can't go back, but we can keep it alive in our memories and stories. I am now 62 and still consider the August Jam to be one of the biggest and best concerts of my life, and trust me when I tell you, people of my age have seen some cool concerts!

I was there! It was absolutely awesome. I was in the Army stationed at Ft Bragg so I'll be the one in the crowd with the short hair.

I was at Charlotte Jam....1974.....Was a Blast MesCulin (However Ya Spell it) when got there, Lots of Pot, The Eagles didn't show, that was a Bummer, dropped 3 hits of Window Pane and ELP Emerson Lake and Palmer were Bad ass, All the Music was on a 4 way System, After ELP The Almond Brothers Played, Mellowed us out a Bit..Great Venue and Jim Dandy was Bad ass also

What a concert!!! Ive never seen so many crazy people! I was 16 and lovin it!
I was in the aisle between the mixing tower and the stage that Saturday as a 15-year-old wannabe pro photographer whose dad was working the show. I'm teaching film photography to our daughter, pulled some August Jam photos from the accordion file to show her some of the work her dad used to shoot and then develop and print in his parents' bathroom darkroom, needed to check a few facts before posting the photos on www.BathroomDarkroom.com, stumbled upon this video and was able to show her the exact moment when I made an image of Jim Dandy holding the flag. Shivers went up my spine when I saw the exact spot on the film.
Whomever shot and posted this film made film this dad's day by making it possible for me to take our now-16-year-old daughter back four decades for a little history lesson.

i was there what memories
I went with my brothers, David and Fred and late friend Mike Owen. I was 15. We drove from Brevard, N.C, got there Friday noon and spent two days dead center stage on the front row. Police confiscated many cameras, & the Governor censored coverage, declaring on national TV that "N.C will never have another outdoor concert", undoubtedly leading to its unfamiliarity. He's dead and forgotten but not this incredible experience which I've never seen matched. Well over 200,000 people attended.

I had forgotten the smoke bombs. How about the bags and bottles of pills and hash openly hawked by people in the back near the toilets? One guy was carrying an empty bottle offering "air". What a trip. I have never smelled so much weed in my life. When the cool dampness caused the air to hang low on Friday night, it looked like we were in the smoke of a forest fire down by the front of the stage from the thousands upon thousands of burning bowls and joints. Absolutely surreal.
We were all so stoned ... the additional smoke in the air just kept us going ... what memories !

I was there. (followed Black Oak anywhere) Some random (nice) guy let me stand on his cooler to get a better look...a few months later, I met the same guy (in Georgia!) Now that's quite a coincidence considering there were 200,000 people at that concert! Small world.

Prayers for a speedy recovery to Piper Dandy & her fiance Ronnie Ford who were on their motorcycle Nov 26th and hit by a car in LA. Both are ok but Piper had surgery on her leg 11/28/15.

was there for ELP (can U say hanging from a crane, spinning piano) & Allman Bros. final encore @ 4 Sunday AM. Both played 4 hours each

+Phil Brock i was there. I remember the spinning piano with the tower of speakers out in the crowd. What a sound system. That was smart. I don't understand why other artists didn't take hints from that and do the same thing. That would be so cool to have a tower of speakers out in the crowd while someone was doing a guitar solo. That is a true stereo sound. I remember Allman Brothers coming out so late and playing so long. I was absolutely wore out. So tired I could hardly stand it. I had been up for about 30 hrs. That was cool how they had the groups set up on flatbeds on railways so they could keep the concert going. Smart! It's so cool to hear from people that were there.
I don't know if you know this or not, but at the time that was the largest concert ever. Even more people than Woodstock. About a year later there was another concert in NY that had more people than August Jam.
Now they have the really big concerts over in England, but what a great time it was. NO VIOLENCE! My how times have changed. Now because of all the violence everyone gets searched before concerts. I wish people knew what it was like back then and how peaceful things could be. The world has really changed. Great to talk to ya.
+dryvur I've argued with a male friend that I know about this concert for ages. He was at Woodstock and swears it was the biggest and the best and The August Jam was nothing more than a drop in the pond. I am going to send him this link but he will never change his mind. But he wasn't at the Jam!

+qtbrniis No, I don't know about the facebook for August Jam, but I will certainly look it up. You will probably never change his mind, but if you look at the number of people at Woodstock and how they weren't all together really close up and then look at August Jam at how all of the people were just jammed together you can see why there were more people there.
It was a concert like no other. Who would have thought up things like putting a tower of speakers out in the crowd to give you the sense of true stereo while playing a MOOG synth. Look up MOOG on you tube and read about all the things that ELP did with this. Look at the pics on YOUTube. You will see them using the old plug and play MOOGs. The plug and play Moogs were not easy to use. There was nothing like it at the time.
Listening to a MOOG going from one side of the crowd to the other side of the crowd was so incredibly smart.
It was way ahead of it's time. Unless someone else comes up with the idea of doing that, you will never again hear a sound like that again.It was absolutely incredible.
Like I said, I don't understand why other artists are not doing this because it is such an incredible sound.
At the time no one knew why the tower of speakers were out there in the crowd until ELP came out and the crowd went absolutely crazy when they heard the synth going from one side of the crowd to the other(you know what I"m saying)...it was an such an incredible sound that I don't know if it will ever be duplicated.
If you were there then you were truly blessed with a sound that you probably won't ever hear again.
And one of the things I don't understand is why it's not being duplicated today. Such a waste!
I have played music all my life and still do and that is still one of the most amazing concerts I have ever seen and I even saw The Young Rascals in 1969.....such incredible talent.

dryvur Now that you remind me, I do remember that sound! At first the group I was with was wondering where it was all coming from. It was all around us and when we thought the sound was coming from one direction, it'd change and come from another. It Was a sound like no other! I hope you find the group on FB and share this with them, copy & paste it word for word, it may jog a lot of memories! This has been a truly special group. I found it right before the 41st anniversary of the jam. We were all sharing stories and pictures and getting a little misty eyed from the memories. I'm sure you'd enjoy the group. I haven't looked up Moog synthesizer yet, but I will. I did look it up a few years ago but will read more in depth than I did then. Good to talk to you as well! If you hadn't shared that I wouldn't have remembered, so thank you so much! Truly awesome memories!

people riped though the fencing to get in;set off purple smoke bombs,were yelling what kind of "stuff" they had to offer. naked guys climbing speaker towers lol , streakers everywhere! I followed behind a crowd of them to get to the tolit faster, bands comming in by air, sliding around in the mud, and the music, my first big jam. lets do it again

After looking back through 6 boxes of old high school memorabilia I found the poster I stole . I stand corrected you are correct, but in my defense that was a lot of drugs ago. Foghat was the band I most wanted to see, and Black Oak Arkansas well made me a Mutant of the Monster.

We had $15.00 tickets and walked in through a hole in the fence. Never saw so much decadence in one place again. I was propped back with my arms on a girls legs, watching the show and out of a quarter million hippys my girlfriend shows up and says ( might know I would find you between some girls legs. ) . She told that to my wife not long ago.

No one has any idea WHY Dixie was called Dixie . The Government had issued a bi-lingual currency , English on one side , French on the other . The French word for 10 is " Dix " . At the time the French controlled the area known as Louisiana which was in the South . Traders from places near the Mississippi like Chicago would come South " to DIXie "and use the money to eradicate language barriers prohibitive to trade .

Probably my second favorite Death Metal band . Early Cannibal Corpse will always be my favorite . Black Oak Arkansas is right up there with Deicide , and Morgoth . Jim Dandy Mangrum had some of the sickest Cookie Monster growls . He had to have been a huge influence on Chris Barnes .Long live 1970s Death Metal
