I’m 16, living in Charlotte, and dreaming about what an incredible time the 70s would have been to grow up in. Unfortunately kids my age seem to have forgotten the greats
I grew up here in Charlotte and my 7th grade social studies teacher (1982) told me about this specific concert. Aside from that, Charlotte has a very rich history of our own talent. You seem interested, talk to folks between the ages of 45-77. They have great stories.

"The Dork" as the band called Aldridge on an album cover is indeed a legend. People always bring up Bonham, Peart, Moon et al in most discussions about greatest this or that when it comes to drummers. Tommy is a pure Rock drummer with power, groove, feel, flash and technical ability that even some of the aforementioned didn't have as much of in all categories, yet still get the accolades Aldridge doesn't. The Dork was way above the class of musicians BOA had to offer. Not that they were bad, just not in the same stratosphere as he is. He was the piece that really helped vault BOA into super stardom, like Peart did with Rush ( not comparing BOA to Rush). Jim Dandy's schtick was only going to get them so far. "Hey Ya'll" is still my favorite BOA tune. Followed by "Hot and Nasty". Aldridge did that so much better than Wayne Evans.
I thought that was him. He was at his best on Pat Travers' "Go for What You Know" live LP. Saw him live with Ozzy and Jake E. Lee back in the 80s. Played a solo with his hands...crazy talented.
Think I saw them in late 70’s @ a live rock n’ roll venue in Tulsa where new & upcoming bands would “get their feet wet”, can still picture them, wild memory haha. Guys from my HS had a band and could play just like “Kansas” could
They are my favorite southern rock band but that might have a thing or two to do with me growing up at the lake of the Ozarks in the 1970s , they actually played the rodeo grounds in camdenton the town I lived in , believe it was 1973 . I was eight years old I don't really have much memory of it but dad listened to them. Alot . Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot would be my other two . I can't say I'm much of a Skynyrd fan other than maybe give me back my bullets and needle and the spoon.
Somewhere in that mass of humanity am I, up from Gastonia for the show - strutting my 20 year old self around and checking out the girls & freaks - lots of freaks - smoking, tripping. I also made it to Rockingham Speedway in '72 for BOA, James Gang, Alice Cooper and others. Some wild days that seemed to never end. But, time waits for no man. It's all but a faded memory now.
@@alexkx8599 Sure, festivals from coast to coast for much of the 70s. I can't explain it, just sharing my experiences. Rock was big business in those days, tickets cheap for the entertainment value you got, not so much anymore - too corporate controlled.
It was the most fascinating 3 days of music, sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll. 9 of us traveled there in a rented Winnebago, after dropping some acid in Indianapolis, and drove there, got in free after telling the guys at the gate we were the roadies for the Eagles (who didn't show up) we plugged into the stage for the entire concert, sold about 250 hits of acid and had the time of our lives. Glad you were there too !
Although I lived only a few miles from the speedway, I was unable to make it. My question is to anyone that was there. Black oak always outdid themselves live...studio was great but in live performances they had that rare ability to sound better and the crowds loved every second...pure energy
I was there. I don't remember much of the 70's, but I remember this. There with my bestie, Starla and my boyfriend (at the time), Frankie. Good times were had by all.
I like their mix of rock n roll, blues, country, etc I guess that makes the proper ingredients for southern rock. And Jim Dandy is a great frontman. Great entertainment.
The way NASCAR attendance is slipping the boys in Charlotte may have to resort to holding a 40 year Anniversary Festival at the Speedway just to keep the books in the black.
Absolutely, I saw them live a huge out door festival around this same time period. At Waterford Park in the northern panhandle of WV with J Geils , Framptons Camel and ?humble Pie. It was like a mini woodstock. Good times that i will never forget.
Remeber seeing this band on a ticket with Grand Funk. To start their set, Jim Dandy came running out on stage playing the washboard. From the first they never slowed down.
I was there, slammed my thumb in the car door when we got there. I self medicated for the duration, only time I got to see Black Oak. Acidic fog for 70's concerts was a blast

We arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway around 9 pm... There were fewer than 1000 people on site.I fell asleep in the grandstand around 1 am. I wasn't at this concert but on July 4th 1976 "Our Nation's Bicentennial" I was at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Rapid City watching REO Speedwagon, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, BOA with Ruby Starr For some reason (Probably leafy and Green and very potent from Columbia possibly) and 43 years of time. Other than BOA and Heart any other bands I listed I think that was who also played, any others that might have played seem to not pop into my brain, but I do remember Heart was the last band. The day before no one had heard of them, after the concert Heart was all over the radio. They played the entire Dreamboat Annie Album Live, both Ann and Nancy very slim and beautiful wearing Gypsy style dresses while they performed. "A Vision of Splendor" Those are memories engrained forever. Black Oak put on a great show, Ruby and Jim really played the Kissing Cousins routine very well, rubbing up against each other, the Mike stands etc. Kissing seductively and that was the image they were going for, they weren't related at all but they made you think they were. Like they wanted everyone to get the wrong impression (Taboo Forbidden Fruit) Great music from a great band as well. Ruby did her "Maybe I'm Amazed" Cover better than I've every heard it before, really wish I could have had the Tech back then to plug into the soundboard and be able to video everything in HD. Never heard McCartney ever do it better! Here is a link to BOA's website: www.blackoakarkansas.net/ and a link to a live performance I believe the first half is : Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the second half is from Cal Jam in 1974. ruclips.net/video/1FK1yci_gIo/видео.html&start_radio=1&t=20 and of course and old BOA Standard "Lord Have Mercy On My Soul" Studio Version: ruclips.net/video/fCgs8KMU-nI/видео.html And a Tribute to Ruby Star Video: ruclips.net/video/NhzTQk7eOiE/видео.html So My Friends who enjoy "Black Oak Arkansas" I hope you enjoy these videos. Eagles were slated but were a no-show. I was there and it was an experience. BOA was a great boogie band. The drummer (Tommy Aldridge) played with Ozzy, Pat Travers still plays in WhiteSnake. Hope this helps.Take care.
This was one of the first band i started listening to in the early 70s thanks to my brother and his buddys
Perfect whiskey drinkin' music!
Black oak always outdid themselves live...studio was great but in live performances they had that rare ability to sound better and the crowds loved every second...pure energy
Some bands are like that. Too me, if an act doesn’t sound good live, they’re fakery and studio production.
70s were the BEST !!
Could have sworn it was 1975, and Yes I was there, It was August Jam...
I was at this concert
It was awesome
I keep coming back here as this tune and and time never gets old. BOA tore it up on this day! I know cause I was there.
I was there. I don't remember much of the 70's, but I remember this. There with my bestie, Starla and my boyfriend (at the time), Frankie. Good times were had by all.
I saw them in Columbia Missouri in the 70's,,small place and i was on the floor right up front..Loved it!!
Blue Note
I like their mix of rock n roll, blues, country, etc I guess that makes the proper ingredients for southern rock. And Jim Dandy is a great frontman. Great entertainment.
I was there..and I will never forget it...rip jimmy henderson
Mangrum was really enough of a country boy that he just didn't give a damn; he was just being himself:-)
The way NASCAR attendance is slipping the boys in Charlotte may have to resort to holding a 40 year Anniversary Festival at the Speedway just to keep the books in the black.

Back when :
- Sex was safe;
- Racing was dangerous;
- People weren't that fat;
- No one had cell phones.
What an era.
People were fat in the 70s.....
Absolutely, I saw them live a huge out door festival around this same time period. At Waterford Park in the northern panhandle of WV with J Geils , Framptons Camel and ?humble Pie. It was like a mini woodstock. Good times that i will never forget.
Jim Dandy didn't age well God damn he looks a mess, LOL
If you can remember the 70s then you didn't have a good enough time.

Tommy Aldridge drums was rocking back then Whitesnake got one kick-ass drummer
One of my favorite bands!
BLACK OAK FOREVER .CANT STOP LISTENING TO THEM. THEY ARE SO GOOD.
The most underrated rock band of all time
You mean the worst rock band of all time.
highjinxwillie62 These guys blow.
Nelson and Matt...you are profoundly wrong.
Yep, no doubt!
But they were mediocre
I may be 57 but I am still there in my mind...it was a dandy
Now we're 65, hopefully. Saw these guys open for Skynard at Winterland SF 1973.
If this was the show I attended Emerson Lake and Palmer and Marshall Tucker played also. ELP totally kicked ass that night.
oooWhatLUCKYMANheWas
Anyone wanna argue where David Lee Roth got his stage presence from?
Merle Patterson JimDandy gave him his blessing
Read Dave's book. He openly admits that Jim Dandy Mangrum was who he based his stage presence on.
Love how the band jammed & the crowds reaction
Tommy Aldridge, a true Legend
I was there! Greatest 12 plus hrs of music. Mini Woodstock. Gates opened 5ish on Friday August 9th. Camped out. Music started at noon on Saturday the 10th and went until after midnight!
We arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway around 9 pm... There were fewer than 1000 people on site.I fell asleep in the grandstand around 1 am. When I woke up, the infield and a large portion of the stands were filled. Emerson, Lake & Palmer were outstanding..! By the way, the concert was labeled "August Jam". Jim Dandy to the rescue.... Jerry R
I was there close to the stage! ❤️ the 70’s!
The guy playing the Les Paul on the right hand the stage with long blond hair is Jimmy Henderson. He is from pearl Mississippi, and one Bad Ass guitar player.
If you was here at this concert. how I envy you right now. I love sum Jim Dandy. I wasn't born until 1986.
My dad was born in 55, he tells me stories all the times about going to BoA concerts and Wet willy concerts. If only I had a time machine
Ozark Mt Daredevils, BOA,. Allman Brothers, ELP and a dozen more. I was there - and boy the stories we could tell !!
I was there................and loved every second of it
Was it not scary for all sorts of reasons? It looks overcast...

Best rock band in history! For the life of me, I cannot understand why people think that the Stones were/are so great when BOA musicianship puts them to shame. Compare Charlie Watts’s drumming with BOA’s drummer.
Great times. Wouldn’t trade with any youngster. Wonderful time to be young. I was 18.
I was 18 year old and it was mind blowing! Nothing compares to it c
Rock and roll pure and simple . Boogie children.
One of my favorites by them..great jam
I would rather hang out and party with ANY random person in this audience than THE COOLEST millennial nowadays.
Damn right hey y'all.
Agreed. I saw them in about 1976, Omaha. Nebraska. Can you say 2nd hand smoke high!
@Roberto Munoz You need a brain.
August Jam, Charlotte Motor Speedway. I was there.
YourONE, in. 250,000
I miss the 60s and 70s. Life was fun and the music was great. What the hell happened?
Real Southern Rock!
I was there. Huge crowd. It was an unforgettable line-up of bands!! Side note: Looks like Jeff Spicoli at 1:23...
I miss shows like this. It was truly the best time to go to concerts!
When girls were natural and beautiful.
I dig no tattoos
We just looked healthy, braless and no piercings or tattoos. Long straight hair, very little makeup if any.
And a big ole hairy bush. Look like a chic got big foot in a head lock.
With thick hairy bushes
And they smiled back at you.
They use to play at my Uncle Kenneth's house back in the day, real stand up guy's.
I bet uncle ken was fun as shit.
I was 16 when I saw this most awesome 3 day concert. You had to be there. I cannot begin to describe just how great it was. (the parts I can remember) Lol
well you know..the 70's and all...but life was good man
+Tay Gray If you're on facebook check this page out. facebook.com/groups/AugustJam74/
You may have been there 3 days, but I remember only one day of music.
Tay Gray, just curious, do you recall how much it cost?
I was there too. Ran out of money and had to leave early
Hey ya'll... I was there. The helicopter drop'n sun visors and hand fans while Black Oak played. Celebrating the August Jam forty years after on August 10, 20014.
Jesus, how low were they?!
Mangrum; what a rockstar!
I WAS THERE!!.....still got pictures....was a a cook in Ft Jackson in Columbia SC....WOW.....where all them yrs have gone......good years......black oak was just one.....Emerson Lake & Palmer were there....so was The Allman Brothers band....three ays of R&R at the speedway
I was there, too. I was 20 yrs old and living in Gastonia. Time flies, don't it? I also saw them at the Rockingham speedway a year or two earlier with 3 Dog Night, Alice Cooper, James Gang, Big Bertha and I can't remember who else. Crazy years they were. I might be wrong, but I was thinking Marshall Tucker played here that evening. Mostly, I remember some great music, lots of cute girls and some fine weed.
I was 22...a soldier....YEOWW....Good to find someone who was there to....often I ask myself....where are all the thousands of people today...by the way....We had to hitchhike back to Ft Jackson...Our old car just gave up its soul....66 yrs old....and those were the best of all!
Fine & cheap.....$20 a white man's oz (Blk oz's were smaller)....Found a20 bill....my guardian angel was looking out for me that day.....even fond a hole in the fence to crawl through....understand....them days soldiers made about $50a week..
Are you on Facebook? I have a private page for people who were there.

If it weren't for this band so many others just wouldn't exist! "The forerunners of Southern Rock"
