On this episode, we take you along for our preparation before the Perth 4wd & Adventure Show; where we had the honour of having Bowser our Unimog on display at the 'Creators Hub', with other RUclipsrs.
We answer the most asked questions we received during the event such as:
- When will the build be finished?
- Will we keep the camper box white?
- Do we have an air conditioner in the cab?
All good things come to an end and after 4 days, we came back to the shed - we have some work ahead!
We continue working on the couch/bed area with our aliminium t-slot profiles. We have to do some serious brainstorming on how we want to build our lifting bed (actuators, winch, pulleys.. so many options!).
We also get started on plumbing our Maxpeedingrods 5KW Diesel heater and install our Evapolar EvaLight Plus evaporative cooler in the cab - a proper 4 seasons expedition vehicle!
Our main completed project this week was our Budget DIY Mega Awning using a heavy duty, waterproof & UV stabilised shade sail. A few things to tweak and it will work like a treat!
Ange also gets to drive the Mog for the first time under the great driving instructions of Chris - how did she perform?! You will have to watch to find out!

If you ever sailed you would cut it down by more than half.That amount will puh a 6 tone boat through water, could rip the side of the canopy away at that sizze, talk to an engineer if I were you.

The stakes for the awning will probably work, but you’ll want two guy lines on each one. They will then stop the stakes being pulled back towards the Mog and help keep the tension in the awning. All the best.

With 28 sqM any little wind will act like a sail on a sailboat.
Will heavily stress all of your four corners a great deal let
alone bigger winds. I’d shorten it to 4 or 5 M and use the
remaining 4 x 2 to 3 M as a side wall. You will then need
longer out posts to give you a proper height along with
2x guy ropes per. Trail on error always works out in the end.
My wife & I enjoy your chemistry together. We are a little
behind on our Fuso build vs Pros like U2, hopefully by late
Spring ( May ) will be off to the back country.

Ange, you did great for your first MOG drive 👍. Chris, For the awning supports, why not use a guying rope from the top of the support down to the ground where you’ll have a stake into the ground, kinda like a tent…

When you've "followed" somebody for too long, their dreams become your memories, I felt like a child on X-Mas when G&B showed up, like Batman doing a cameo on a Spiderman movie. I am pretty sure Ang is not gonna let go that stirwheel. If I ever, EVER, get to have my own Camper, I would paint a Costarrican Ox cart wheel on both sides. Awesome video like always. ¡¡PURA VIDA!!

That is a massive amount of cloth to hang......firstly you will have to triangulate your loading points.
Basicly minimum you will need to run guy ropes to the ground to allow you to tension anything that large or put concrete footings everywhere you go.
Please minimise any solid weight from the sail - should use lashing or ropes ..... using solid turbuckles is asking for problems if something rips in a gust or just wear and tear ..... and could easily lead to serious injury (getting smacked in the head by a flogging shade sail !)
• My sugestion is to make hinge two uprights from the lower edge of your accommodation (front and rear - these can be telescopic), connect the two with a spinning bar - to this you roll up the awning on it. So a minimalist way to design this is to build it to hinge down to ground ....... unroll shade (a safer place to organise the shade sail, reduces wrestling).....connect the two corners to the roof (this can be done by leading ropes from the corners of the shade through the roof eyes, down to a cleat/tie off point on the truck chasis)......this then picks up the two uprights and connecting bar to provide the secondary shade support, this is tiangulated to the solid hinge points on the truck and can be tensioned by the other end of the shade......now you have to consider if you want to add two more uprights to lift another section of your shade or take the trailing edge to the ground.......this then completes the tensioning triangulation you will require.
This creates a shade roof with a shade wall to the ground with minimal support for such a huge shade.

Add 2 guide lines with spring v- pegs to each post at 45 degrees to the post and it'll help a lot to stabilise the post. I think there are also pegs with a springs built in to dampen the affect of wind on the awning.
You did a fantastic job of driving the Mog Ange.... It's a big truck and it does take sometime to get used to the size but in time you'll be an expert... Love you guys 💕

I hav’nt looked at all the comments so this may have already been mentioned, but have a a look at the Lippert bed system. The bed “hangs” on straps, has two guide rails and a greater lift/drop length than the actuators allow. It seems a relatively simple system that could be a DIY job.

Maybe you can scissor lift the bed, or use a lever arm on each side. You could drive it with a horizontal actuator. I’m totally addicted to y’all! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Howdy from Texas! Great episode! Ange, you did great at driving! Have you ever driven stick before? Chris, for the bed, I would like to suggest you look into fabricating a scissor lift. There are lots of resources online for the calculations. You would probably only need a couple of actuators to get it done. For the awning, you can use guy lines. Cheers!

The standard trans is the Best Anti theft devices these days ,As Few know how to use it. Especially here in the USA. My 1985 AM General M923A1 has an automatic trans. Take care.

Wowzers Ange!!!!! Awesome first go at driving Bowser, you nailed it especially air brakes without stalling, manual - you did really well!! 😝😱. Awning will be perfect till you get really travelling and decide what you really need. Great team work together team Outfit. Chrissy boy will have to do the teenager L Plate driver training in the future as a payback for that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
A thought on re watching the awning part……I think if you use pole to hold the end of the awning and then a rope to anchor you won’t have to pound the pole into the ground. I don’t know if you have the pet screw anchors in Aus. But on this side of the pond we do, I bet they would work well in most soil/sand.

Hey Chris, a little secret teaching tip….. Good habits can be thought anywhere and make driving anything easier. Like always have 2 hands on the steering wheel, or don’t have the left foot near the clutch when not changing gear.
Just watch each other when driving anything to adhere to it and call each other out. It’s going to become a good habit and doesn’t require thinking about for a particular vehicle.
I am a Mog owner and driving instructor, feel free to hit me up for tips. Driving lessons in a couple situation can be challenging :)

Sorry Chris but I hold zero hope for that awning idea. You need to spend the dollars on a wind out version with side bars like you see on caravans. And that aircon idea has a 10% chance of cooling in a hot cabin.
Top effort Ange with your first Mog lesson, practice will make it easy.
Shame about the bed plans needing to change, you'll come up with something better anyway. Would a pulley system with a small 12v winch work? Like they have in some of the rooftop tents.

For the bed we're still brainstorming but we're hoping we can make a pulley system with an actuator work.

As an experienced overlander, take my advice and put a proper vapour cycle air conditioning system in the cab. Australia is a hot country. And if you overland a lot you'll be spending a lot of time in that cab. For every 5000km you drive, you'll be sitting in that cab for approx. 100 hours.
And swamp fans make very little difference to the cabin temps on a hot day but will raise the moisture levels considerably and will likely make it even less comfortable on a long drive.
Hi. Loving your videos. On our caravan door corner we have a small wheel attached so it will not put a hole in the annexe awning. It just rolls when it is windy.
Yeah, a wrap would be sweet. You could make the graphics whatever you wanted :)
Pull up next to trees, and just hook on to them with an 'Occy' strap. Also, good idea to get a little wheel on the top outer corner of the door so it doesn't rub a hole through the awning.....

Looks good! Just and F.Y.I some (not all) of the diesel heater pumps (seperate from heat exchange) have a anoying "ticking" to them when they work, so have it as far from your sleeping area as you can and isolate it with rubber. Also if you put a loop in the diesel line after the pump I believe that can help as well.. My experience. Keep up the awesome work!
If you still want to go for the actuators for the bed you can look into multi stage pistons as a possibility . . . Maybe harder to find as electric actuator because i think most of them are screw type with the limitation you were talking about.
A wrap seems cool but I would be worried about tree branches damaging it. Makes me think of something my brother once said about when he did dirt track racing, “Never paint your car a color you can’t touch up with a can of spray paint.” 👽 Have you thought of a telescoping table for the couch/bed like they do on sailboats? Swamp coolers work great if you don’t have high humidity. Just IMO. 😎

For the awning post, weld a tab lower on the awning post. Then you can use longer post and hit on the lower tab. I would also suggest using some ropes with pegs on the post, to help secure the post. Thanks for the awesome content. I hope it helps

For the awning, the only thing you need to add is a tension rope from the top of each of the 2 poles to the ground at around 45-30deg, that will pull your poles out and put tension to the canvas which is what you need. The poles will only take compression force instead of trying to make them work in bending. Hope this helps. Great job on the build BTW
Turn the steely around , the flat side to the vehicle .. run a rope from the steely to a large tent pen . That will stabilise the steely . I would use a tubed tent pole instead of the steely ..This saves on weight & you really don't need to drive it into the ground . Had a Government job for approx 30 years and spent most of my time living in a caravan setting up the camp every few days , including an annex strung up to trees and tent poles . That's my 2 cents worth .
Definitely wrap it,I think I've watched every episode thinking how epic it would look wrapped.

I reckon drive the peg into the floor as hard as you can and then use a ratchet strap to attach the awning to it and tighten it to your liking. It’s hard to drive it while the awning is attached to the floor

Big fan of your DIY efforts!
Just a heads up with the evap cooler you have in the cab. There are good places for these units, however a ferrous metal box isn't a great location. If you don't have long term plans for this rig, then no drama. Otherwise, dumping extra humidity into the cabin is only going to corrode exposed surfaces, encourage mould growth, and generally reduce comfort (you sweat more in proportion to humidity). If you plan to keep the vehicle long term, look at solutions that actually reduce humidity in the cabin, leaving things like a sock filled with desiccant material can prevent condensation within the cab which in turn slows corrosion.
If they are sponsoring you, then I get it, do what you gotta do :)

Chris, I used to be the same when anyone drove my 406🤣🤦♂ infact I’m still the same with the MB Trac! If you need to slow the clutch changes down, maybe double clutch it. It will also help the synchros (the syncros are a lot better than 406s)

congrats on the successful show guys, i hope we see you at a CQ show one day. Can i make a suggestion or two guys? First can you make the bed fold against the rear wall and have the underside padded to act as the lounge back and then some seat cushions either under the bed or supplementary. Also, i made a 5m awning for my old slide on and i found it best to use sturdy tent poles (i made my height adjustable ones from the legs of a broken gazebo) and hold them with some sturdy angle iron pegs and ropes. I added some midway poles and ropes to help keep the awning stable as well as help keep the height uniform. Anyway hope you get it sorted and as usual, i love all you do..
Very good ideas! If we have the bed fold against the back wall we won't be able to fit a queen size which would be a shame but I think it would make an easier solution. Cheers
A center pole added to the awning might be cheap easy solution for you. 3 pieces of household PVC plumbing pipe (10 foot long) joined together or made to extend with a cushion on top to save tears in awning. Would also eliminate water pooling in awning. Expo looked like it was a good time enjoyed by all. Handled that well for 1st timer driving the Mog thrown at you like that (points for team Ange on that 1).
Funnily enough the concept you've gone for with the awning is essentially what they used to do with the mogs in the army when they would tie tarps and camouflage nets to the roof and then tie them to star pickets. I'd recommend buying a star picket dolly or "pole driver" rather then use a Mallet. Also get like some Supapeg Extendible Poles with pole caps to push the awning up and take some of the tension.

You can use two actuators where you have space on the inside and then use bike chain or wire cable and some pulleys driven by the these two actuators to lift the other side of the bed where the departure angle stops you using actuators. Shouldn’t be hard to rig up, will need guides on the back wall of the box for the bed to run up and make it secure, also add to locking pins or catches so when the bed is all the up or down it is secured if flex from the chain or cables 👍
Very good idea. I'll try see if I can find a couple chain drives that aren't too bulky or ugly
@@TheOutFit garage door lift chains have a threaded rod for adjustment and could be used, will take some cobbling with suitable idler gears from garage doors or even bikes 👍
Use guy lines from the awning over the top of your post to the ground. This will transfer the load down through the post whilst stabilising the post. With that size of awning you might want to try multiple guys off each post and add an additional post in the centre (in line with your other posts).
Legend, we just did this today for the upcoming video. Using two guy ropes and sand pegs for each post fixed it completely. Now just need to find posts that are longer than 1.8m
@@TheOutFit There are telescopic poles out there that will give you the height and pack away smaller. The question is if they will be strong enough to support your awning. You probably will be able to find some I have no doubt.
Hi guy’s! Just had a vid come up in my feed about a bed lift that could be done with a 12v winch and nylon webbing. You might want to check it out it was on Sevon O Savage’s page about a month ago. Love the build.
For the star pickets, make a bridal and have 2 heavy duty pegs into the ground, method is known as a crows foot, or use 2 star pickets behind to make a triangle and hit them in about half way, from as close to the ground as possible secure to the mid point of the front picket. I hope that makes sense and helps to get enough tension, cheers 🍻
that was a pretty good idea showing her how to move that truck. but its easy to forget a week later. Type up a sequence of operations and stick it in the glove box for emergency

Really love the build guys, I’m pretty jealous. I learned to drive a mog back in 86 and always had the idea of putting a caravan , minus axles on the tray. Maybe one day. You might be better off with a Motorhome awning that bolts to the side of the camper.

I am sorry you have not build the platform for the door because of the safety problem.., You just need to put the same thing you biuld on both sides of the wheel that can be locked when it slides in., so when you slide it out you have a board that is bolted on top of the sliding bars then fit the steps in place....Cheers
I would strongly suggest that you mount the diesel heater directly to the floor of the camper, and use a good sealant around the mounting plate. If you mount it high, there is a chance the exhaust will leak gasses and possibly gas you in your sleep! If you floor mount it and seal the mounting plate, there is no chance of the exhaust gas coming back into the camper.

You can mount an a/c. unit on the roof. My colleague mounted a lot of them for the Army on the roof while he working for Mack trucks
They did heaps of work for the army and it was just one of the modifications to Unimogs that they made
Maybe one day - at this stage we want to keep the roof space on the driver's side for storage and keep the cupola on the passenger's side :)
tip: maybe if you add some ice blocks to the water to bump up the cooling. See if it work!
First time commenting. Love your content and enjoy watching the Mog take shape. Im sure it will take you guys some adjusting and getting used to the size of the beast. Massive difference in size and speed compared to the Jeep. Look forward to seeing what the future has in store for you both and can’t wait to follow your adventures online.
Not sure if anyone has already suggested but I would think that using double guy ropes on each stake you have in the corner of the shade sail will be sufficient support and will assist in preventing the stake from pulling out. Remember it will only be as good as the pegs you use to hold the guy ropes in.
That is a big shade sale though and I wonder if it’s going to be that practical in the real world. Have you thought about mounting an off the shelf retractable awning to the side or a much cheaper and clean looking option would be to fix an aluminium sail track to the side of the box. You could pick up large privacy screens (6m x 1.8m) for under $100 and it will slide straight into the track, add a couple of poles and guy ropes and you will be set, or alternatively get a canvas awning custom made to suit your dimensions and also use poles and ropes to support it on the outside. It could be folded and stored when not in use. If you do go with this option I would consider getting a leader chord stitched into each end of the canvas and long enough so that one person can pull the canvas along the track from the ground while the other person guides the canvas into the sail track at the other end either from a ladder or from your entry stairs. I would think it would only take a couple of minutes to set up and would pack up just as quick.

All you need is a “driver under instruction” sign (there are detailed colour, font, size regulations) on the back of the Mog and Ange can drive while you are in the passenger seat. Important point - you don’t need to be an instructor, just licensed to drive the class and 0.0 alcohol
This is from NT, but I am fairly sure it’s nation wide the same:
Learning to drive
When learning to drive a heavy vehicle, you must be accompanied by an appropriately licensed person occupying the seat next to the driver, or in the case of buses, the seat nearest the driver.
You must display a DRIVER UNDER INSTRUCTION sign at the rear of the vehicle. The sign must be at least 530mm wide and 300mm high with DRIVER UNDER INSTRUCTION in black writing, at least 75mm high and on a yellow background.
Mate of mine learned how to drive HR by helping me driving my Mog from Canberra to Darwin.
In WA, if you are NOT an instructor: A person who has held a current HR driver's licence for at least 4 years.
The different driving and instruction rule per state drive me nuts!

Brasse ton volant comme pour essuyer une assiette, ne croise jamais tes bras.
Un retour de volant en passant un obstacles peut te casser l'articulation du pouce.
C'est un camion, ça se conduit pas comme une voiture.

Guy lines mate, use a double guy line from the top of each stake with long tent pegs hammered into the ground. You will be able to work out the angles and best distance from the pole to place the pegs through trial and error but 45 degrees and 90 degrees usually work best. Think pegging down a tent. I was thinking the diesel heater, the pump makes a loud clicking noise as it operates which gets very annoying. Alucab has a small pellet stove which could heat the box.
Low E window tinting will make a big difference in cab temperatures.

I think a telescope on the roof could be a cool use for the gunny hatch. Then you could see a long way when your out in the middle of nowhere.

Good job on your first time driving the Uni…I’d think you should be able to find a used little a/c unit which you can put on top of the cab ..to get real a/c and not those horrible evap things :) Live confidently and peacefully

Yes that MAN was a nice vehicle nice truck that's the one you need to get that way you can have a little bit of your house but still pretty much cleaner where you want to go on that thing 👀😋🤪😃
Main problem is it's actually oversize in width for Australia, you need a special permit to drive!
G’day guys, I love your videos, the mog is looking great. A friend of mine has installed a 12 volt under dash air conditioning unit that doesn’t require the use of the engine. I think this could solve your cooling issues in the cab
